With the third season well under way, it's clear that Farscape has developed into a grown-up show. There's a new self-confidence and a new maturity here that's entirely welcome after the often wildly erratic tone of the second season. The production design and high-quality effects work remain true to the show's original quirky style, although both the look and the more adult-themed scripts have become progressively darker. This second box set of Season 3 features five of the nastiest, most shocking and incident-packed episodes to date. Things start badly when psychotic madman Kaarvok kills D'Argo and Chiana and sucks out their brains. Only later do we discover he's "twinned" them when the same fate befalls Crichton--though both Crichton "twins" survive. Life just gets more and more complicated thereafter. Crichton twin 1 stays on Moya with D'Argo, Chiana and Jool, while Crichton twin 2 transfers to Talyn with Aeryn, Crais, Rygel and Stark. Talyn is being pursued by a Peacekeeper retrieval squad led by Aeryn's mum, Xhalax Sun, and is then swallowed by a Budong (in the Ben Browder-penned episode "Green-Eyed Monster") before Mrs Sun catches up with her daughter and pals. Back on Moya a mysterious "Energy Rider" possesses the crew in turn. Meanwhile on Talyn, Aeryn and Crichton twin 2 have been blissfully having sex, while Crais lusts vainly for Aeryn. Just wait until Scorpius gets involved. On the DVD: This box set contains the usual "Info Pods" and other extras, plus the first Region 2 commentary, for the episode "Relativity", with actor Lani Tupu and director Peter Andrikidis; it's a shame that they don't have a lot to say. --Mark Walker

  • Idiot Box [1996]Idiot Box | DVD | (11/02/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £14.99

Kev watches too much television, the Idiot Boxof the title. An unemployed hooligan, he wants there to be something in his life apart from vandalism, drink and perfunctory sex. He rages against dogs and people who are as rude to him as he is to everybody--anger is who he is. His best friend Mick is even more bad natured, and between them they concoct a doomed bank-robbery. Kev beats up the police informer who sells him the guns; the police are watching the bank, waiting for it to be attacked by an entirely different bank robber; and their stolen getaway car is reclaimed by its owner. Often very funny, Idiot Box is a terrifying film about the stuntedness of young male Australian working class lives. Ben Mendelsohn and Jeremy Sims bring pathos and wit to their portrayals of Kev and Mick, while also making it clear that these are not young men you would wish to meet or fall out with. David Caesar's deliberately jagged directorial style echoes the adrenalin-driven lives of his protagonists and keeps us constantly on edge as he cuts between story lines. --Roz Kaveney

  • Fantastic Four/Elektra/DaredevilFantastic Four/Elektra/Daredevil | DVD | (16/10/2006) from £26.98   |  Saving you £-6.99 (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

Elektra (Dir. Rob Bowman 2005): From the forces that brought you X-Men and Daredevil... Superstar Jennifer Garner proves that looks can kill as the sexiest action hero ever to burst from the pages of Marvel Comics. Restored to life after sustaining mortal wounds in Daredevil an icy solitary Elektra (Garner) now lives only for death as the world's most lethal assassin. Using her bone-crunching martial arts skills and Kimagure - the ability to see into the future - Elektra is on a collision course with darkness until her latest assignment forces her to make a choice that will lead either to her redemption or destruction in the ultimate battle between good and evil! Daredevil (Dir. Mark Steve Johnson 2002): Ben Affleck is Matt Murdock a.k.a Daredevil. As a young boy he lost his sight in a chemical accident which left him with his other senses superhumanly enhanced (and some incredible acrobatic skills). Flash forward and Matt is working by day as a pro bono lawyer (with partner Jon Favreau) and by night as a righteous avenger. The plot sees New York supercriminal Kingpin (Michael Clarke Duncan) calling on Irish assassin Bullseye (Colin Farrell) to take care of some business involving the father of Jennifer Garner's Elektra (with whom Matt falls head over heels in love). Daredevil is a shadowy comic book fantasy that provides plenty of fast-paced high-kicking action. Fantastic Four (Dir. Tim Story 2005): Prepare for the fantastic! The lifelong dream of inventor astronaut and scientist Dr. Reed Richards (Ioan Gruffudd) is close to being realized. He is spearheading a trip to outer space to the center of a cosmic storm. There he hopes to unlock the secrets of the human genetic codes for the benefit of all humanity. Extensive government grant cutbacks nearly dashed the visionary's hopes of the historic flight until Reed accepted a financing deal with his old college rival Victor Von Doom (Julian McMahon) now a billionaire industrialist. Reed's crew for the mission includes his best friend astronaut Ben Grimm (Michael Chiklis); Sue Storm (Jessica Alba) Von Doom's director of genetic research and Reed's ex-girlfriend; and Sue's hot-headed younger brother pilot Johnny Storm (Chris Evans). With benefactor Von Doom in tow the four set off for the exploration of a lifetime. The mission is uneventful - until Reed discovers a miscalculation of the speed of the approaching storm. Within minutes the event threshold is upon them. The space station is engulfed by turbulent clouds of cosmic radiation which genetically transforms the crew. Their DNA is irrevocably altered - and so is their future. Back on earth the effects of the exposure are quickly revealed. Reed gains the ability to stretch and contort his body into any shape he can imagine and as leader of the group is given the name Mr. Fantastic; Sue is able to render herself invisible and to create and project powerful force fields as Invisible Woman; Johnny becomes known as The Human Torch as he can now engulf his body in flames and take flight at will; and Ben whose freakish transmutation is the most shocking becomes an orange-coloured rock-like superhumanly strong creature The Thing. Together they turn tragedy into triumph and catastrophe into coalition using their unique and formidable powers to thwart the evil plans of their now steely-eyed iron-fisted nemesis Dr. Doom...

A very loose retelling of the legendary story of Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid the film achieved notoriety thanks to the lead female Jane Russell. Aged just 19 when the film was made her ample physical attributes were such that the producer and director Howard Hughes spent thousands advertising the film in advance of its release with the slogan 'what are the two reasons for Jane Russell's rise to stardom?' The film was initially banned (which Hughes wanted) although this did not st

The 1994 movie Stargate was originally intended as the start of a franchise, but creators Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin were distracted celebrating their Independence Day. Episodic TV treatment was the natural next step. Since neither Kurt Russell nor James Spader would be able to commit, it gave the producers licence to tinker with the cast and the universe they'd explore. Replacing the roles of Colonel Jack O'Neill and Dr. Daniel Jackson respectively are Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks. They're joined by Captain Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) and guilt-stricken former alien baddie Teal'c (Christopher Judge) to form the teacher's pet primary unit SG-1 With a seemingly endless network of Stargates found to exist on planets all across the known universe, their mission is to make first contact with as many friendly races as possible. Chasing their heels at almost every turn are the "overlord" pharaohnic Goa'uld--the ancient Egyptian Gods who are none too chummy after the events of the original film. The welcome notion of a continued plot thread sees offshoots that follow the reincarnation of Daniel's wife, Sam's father literally joining a renegade faction of the Goa'uld, and Jack in an unending quest to out-sarcasm everyone. There's something of The Time Tunnel to the show's premise, but amid a dearth of derivative look-a-likes, Stargate has held its own with stories that put the science fiction back into TV sci-fi. Concluding the cliff-hanger from the end of Season One, "The Serpent's Lair" is a rollercoaster of wit, plot twists, and cutting-edge special effects as the SG-1 team resign themselves to a suicide mission. Then it's a case of ignorance of the law being no excuse in "Prisoners", as the team winds up in a penal colony striking a deal with someone who will have far-reaching influence on their future. Sam is stalked by an assassin after a rescue mission all "In the Line of Duty". She saves someone in the most unique of ways--by taking over as host of their Goa'uld symbiont. This introduction of Jolinar is key to much of the continuing storyline. Dwight Schultz guest stars as "The Gamekeeper" in a garden that forces the team to puzzle their way out of re-living secrets of the past. But all is not what it seems. --Paul Tonks
