The New Adventures of Pinocchio is the charming sequel to the 1996 live-action movie. With a largely brand-new cast, the most important returning actor is Martin Landau as Geppetto. His role is pared down, however, by a neat twist in the tale. Udo Kier is the other returning actor, this time in the new bad guy/girl role of Madame Flambeau, whose carnival sets itself up in Pinocchio's town and offers everyone a miracle elixir to change their lives. Pinocchio (now played as a real boy by Gabriel Thomson) hopes the elixir will make his papa feel better from a nasty cold, but it turns out Flambeau tricked him with puppet-making juice. So now it's Geppetto who's the wooden star of the show! Lots of surprises keep the story happily moving along, with secret identities waiting to spring from the likes of Warwick Davis as the ringleader Dwarf. The Jim Henson Studio puppets are first class as always, with some flawless computer graphics coming to the rescue every so often. There's a beautiful backdrop of Luxembourg countryside too for this pantomime where everyone looks as if they had great fun putting it together. --Paul Tonks

It's clear from the opening episodes of its third season that Farscape has developed into a grown-up show. There's a new self-confidence and a new maturity here that's entirely welcome after the often wildly erratic tone of the second season. The production design and high-quality effects remain true to the show's original quirky style, although both the look and the more adult-themed scripts have become progressively darker. It's also clear that anyone who has not followed Farscape extremely closely from the very first episode of Season One will be utterly baffled by the convoluted plotting and complex character interactions. Farscape is a whole galaxy away from the clean, cosy world of Star Trek. On the DVD: Farscape's third season is being released as both standard two-disc sets and strictly limited deluxe editions: the latter are handsomely packaged with a variety of collectable extras, in this case a Farscape watch, limited edition prints and a photo album. The discs are the same as the standard Volume 3.1. --Mark Walker

In the Coral Sea east of Queensland and south of the Solomons lie many plateaus of coral that rise to the surface and are capped with coral islands. They are so remote and rarely visited and yet they are beautiful islands abundant with nesting birds and turtles. The difference between these islands and their counterparts on the Great Barrier Reef is that they sparkle with greater colour and contrast. The backdrop to the white plumage of the nesting birds is of green foliage a pure white beach and a blue lagoon of amazing clarity. Scuba divers have voted the Coral Sea the best dive location in the world. The visibility is a standard 50 metres of better. That's exceptional! All these attributes draw Ben Cropp to these coral isles in the month of November when the seas are calm cyclones still absent and the islands come alive with nesting birds and turtles. All this activity draws the predators. Sharks patrol the beach circling the bay over and over in the hope of scavenging a helpless chick. Such is the visibility that Ben can wait with underwater camera on the beach see a shark coming 50 metres away and duck under the water and view the oncoming shark that seemingly is right there in front of him. The green turtles mate in the coral lagoon and draw the tiger sharks in. The females are exhausted from laying at night and mating in the day and are easy prey. The males are more alert and less likely to be eaten. Ben and his team scuba dive these crystal waters with wonderful coral gardens big fish and many sharks that go into a feeding frenzy when food is available. Down in this silent world its difficult to imagine that back in 1942 this area exploded in the deafening roar of the Battle of the Coral Sea a psychological turning point in the Pacific war. It has always been a harsh world for the island wildlife in this beautiful tropical setting. The Coral Sea spawns cyclones that devastate nesting birds. Early sailing ships struck the jagged rampart and left their bones on the coral reef. Ben Cropp and his family explore this wonderful area in his vessel Freedom. It's a voyage of discovery and adventure to these emerald isles in a rainbow sea.

Ben Affleck worked triple-time on The Town, in which he directs, stars, and co-adapts Chuck Hogan's Prince of Thieves. Affleck's Doug MacRay comes from a line of Boston bank robbers. With his father (Chris Cooper) behind bars, he spent most of his childhood in Charlestown with loyal hothead Jem (The Hurt Locker's Jeremy Renner). Doug had a chance to go legit as a pro hockey player, but he threw it away on drugs and bad behavior. After the armed robbery that opens the film, Jem becomes convinced that bank manager Claire (Vicki Cristina Barcelona's Rebecca Hall) saw something, so Doug, who wore a disguise at the time, sets out to make sure she doesn't tell FBI agent Frawley (Mad Men's Jon Hamm) anything incriminating (Titus Welliver plays Frawley's partner). Doug starts by asking Claire out, and finds she's more shaken than stirred--and that he likes her better than Jem's oxy-addicted sister, Krista (Gossip Girl's Blake Lively), his sometime girlfriend. Unfortunately, neither Jem nor vicious enforcer Fergie (Pete Postlethwaite) will cut him loose until he orchestrates two more scores--the last to take place at Fenway Park. If The Town offers fewer surprises than Affleck's directorial debut, Gone Baby Gone, he raises the stakes with well-planned heists, nerve-jangling car chases, and deadly shootouts. Though Affleck looks too clean-cut to portray a thug, he gives a nicely understated performance, while Hall proves an inspired choice as a woman who could make a bad guy turn good--or die trying. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

The Dugong is an elusive animal thought to have given rise to the legend of the mermaid. Around the world Dugong have been hunted to near extinction. Australia is their last sanctuary and even here they are on the decline from gill netting and indigenous hunting. Ben Cropp searches the tropical waters for this endangered species. In Shark Bay Western Australia he finds a healthy huge herd. But on the east coast there is a fifty percent reduction in numbers. In the Torres Strait Ben films indigenous hunters harpooning Dugong. The hunters are held in high esteem for as well as being an important food source Dugong are of great social and cultural significance to these people. In Vanuatu Ben meets a most friendly Dugong that loves to hug and nuzzle divers and shows remarkable intelligence in the way it captures turtles and brings them back to the natives as an offering of friendship.

With the third season well under way by now it's clear that Farscape has developed into a grown-up show. There's a new self-confidence and a new maturity here that's entirely welcome after the often wildly erratic tone of the second season. The production design and high-quality effects work remain true to the show's original quirky style, although both the look and the more adult-themed scripts have become progressively darker. It's also clear that anyone who has not followed Farscape extremely closely from the very first episode of Season One will be utterly baffled by the convoluted plotting and complex character interactions. All the principal actors know their characters inside and out by now, and delight in showing off their many weaknesses and flaws. Refreshingly, the crew of Moya are a squabbling, bickering, selfish bunch most of the time, who somehow and against expectations manage to pull together (just) at the crucial moment. The writing has matured, too, remaining as witty as ever but equally unafraid to push both genre and censorship boundaries as villains bloodily torture their victims (usually Crichton) and the main characters become more and more obsessed about their sex lives (or lack thereof). Farscape is a galaxy far, far away from the clean, cosy world of Star Trek.--Mark Walker
