The height of the band's popularity was in the 1980s although it retained a cult following for many years after. The band's music was most recognisable for the sounds it infused with Scottish folk and martial music styles as well as for playing and engineering their guitar driven sound to evoke the inspirational spirit of bagpipes fiddles and other traditional folk instruments. A decade before the untimely death of lead singer Stuart Adamson Big Country provide a unique performance at London's Alexander Palace. The timeless and remarkable sound created by Adamson's guitar riffs were always reminiscent of the band's Scottish roots blending a bagpipe-like sound with a thumping anthemic catalogue of memorable hits including Fields of Fire In a Big Country Look Away and Harvest Home. Released to coincide with the band's recently released album The Journey and 2013 Tour.

There's a fair amount of 1980's stuff on the MTV 20 Pop compilation, and... no, wait, come back! Because not unlike the Now series of albums, this kind of item is valuable not only for the way in which it reminds us of what was any good during a given pop period, but for the way in which it consigns much of the dross to well-earned oblivion by the simple act of passing it by. So it is, then, that this video is packed full of pop classics, compiled with a loving 20/20 hindsight. Highlights are Gary Numan's original (1982) version of "Cars", preceded by some suitably snotty interview footage, Elvis Costello's inevitable "Every Day I Write the Book" and a wonderfully clunky juxtaposition of U2 and Lionel Ritchie. The inclusion of Chumbawamba's excellent "Tubthumping" presumably means that the band decided to restrain their anti-capitalist convictions in order to communicate with a wider audience (ie: sell out)? There are a few also-rans as well--The Fixx, anyone?--and inevitable instances of US-centricity (Smashmouth?), but the best bit has to be the legendary Tears for Fears video for "Shout", reminding us all that Roland Orzabal was in fact a pop genius. The house ads ("MTV--no longer only for deviants!") are a hoot.--Roger Thomas

Tracklisting 1. Peace In Our Time 2. Wonderland 3. Broken Heart (Thirteen Valleys) 4. Steel town 5. River Of Hope 6. Thousand Yard Stare 7. King Of Emotion 8. Chance 9. In A Big Country
In terms of atmosphere it's hard to imagine something that would beat the emotional charge of Big Country playing Glasgow's Barrowlands venue on New Years Eve 1983/84.The concert not only covers classic Big Country songs but also includes a full pipe band sequence a cover of the classic Smokey Robinson song 'Tracks Of My Tears' and the boisterous finale of 'Auld Lang Syne'. A classic Scottish rock band at their best. Music produced by veteran Steve Lillywhite and film directed by Nigel Gordon. Tracklist: 1. 1000 Stars 2. Angle Park 3. Close Action 4. Lost Patrol 5. Wonderland 6. The Storm 7. Pipe Band Sequence 8. Porroh Man 9. Chance 10. Inwards 11. Fields Of File 12. Harvest Home 13. Tracks Of My Tears 14. In A Big Country 15. Auld Lang Syne
