It is possible that Black Sabbath enjoy a higher global profile now that at any point in the group's long history. This, of course, is largely due to singer Ozzy Osbourne's undignified but profitable decision to allow MTV to portray him as a sort of heavy metal Grandpa Simpson. Possibly as a result of his immense celebrity, Osbourne didn't find the time to be interviewed for this retrospective documentary. However, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward are on hand to provide a telling of events which, while never as entertaining as Osbourne's familiar routine, is at least more coherent. Osbourne is irrepressibly present in the archive performance footage collected here, shot at various points between 1970 and 1978. The early stuff is especially interesting, proving beyond doubt that Sabbath--whether they realised it or not--had much more in common with the prototypical punks like The Stooges and the MC5, who were then starting to make waves in America, than they have with the uncountable long-haired and leather-trousered heavy metal bozos who have attempted to fill Sabbath's shoes since. On the DVD: The Black Sabbath Story is presented in widescreen. Sound is available in Dolby 5.1 Surround or Dolby Digital. The menu of extras is a little confusing to negotiate, but includes further interviews with band members, a gallery of Sabbath albums, and a long re-telling of Sabbath's very early history by former manager Jim Simpson.--Andrew Mueller

The Longest Yard: It was hard to put a team together... until they found out who they were playing. Director Peter Segal and comedian Adam Sandler join forces once more for a fun remake of the 1974 classic The Longest Yard. In the role of Paul ""Wrecking"" Crewe first immortalized by Burt Reynolds (who appears here as Nate Scarborough) Sandler plays an ex-football star whose career ended amidst allegations of point shaving. Fed up he drunkenly steals his unfriendly wife's (an uncredited Courtney Cox Arquette) luxury car and drives it into a multi-car pileup. This lands Crewe in a cruel Texas state penitentiary. His only respite comes from Warden Hazen (James Cromwell) who wants Crewe to help lead his well-equipped prison-guard football team to the league championship. Crewe timorously agrees suggesting the creation of an opposing team of convicts to the give the guards an easy tune-up before the season. Based on the cult British television show from the 1960s, THUNDERBIRDS explodes into the 21st Century with this thrilling live-action version of the franchise. Drawing on similar themes and familiar characters, director Jonathan Frakes (STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT) sticks closely to the spirit of the original show while making use of the new technology available to him 40 years after the program first aired to give the film a modern look. The International Rescue organization--a team of highly organized law enforcers--is the focal point for the movie. International Rescue is based on a remote desert island location, and is called into action whenever the world's sinister masterminds threaten to disturb the balance of society. Jeff Tracy (Bill Paxton) heads up the team, and employs his sons to help him out. Teenager Alan Tracy (Brady Corbet) is a little too young to join, and is constantly frustrated by his lack of opportunity to join the brothers on their missions. But when the evil villain known as The Hood (Ben Kingsley) traps the International Rescue team in outer space, it seems Alan's time has come. The Hood steals one of the many spacecrafts designed by International Rescue, and executes an outlandish scheme to rob the Bank of England. Alan and his pal Fermat (Soren Fulton) attempt the double-whammy of rescuing the trapped family and stopping The Hood, by drawing on help from the sultry detective Lady Penelope (Sophia Myles), her butler Parker (Ron Cook), and a few gadgets and vehicles courtesy of International Rescue. With comic references to the original show scattered liberally throughout the movie, and a sense of fun and adventure, this is a film that should appeal to both old and new fans of these popular crime-fighting characters.
After barely surviving prison, the demented Firefly clan go on the run, unleashing a whole new wave of murder, madness and mayhem.
