  • Gulliver's Travels [DVD]Gulliver's Travels | DVD | (16/05/2011) from £4.99   |  Saving you £15.00 (300.60%)   |  RRP £19.99

Gulliver's Travels is about as marginal as the trailers suggest; it's a tepidly entertaining, irreverent, and sometimes crass comedy starring Jack Black that takes some gigantic liberties with Jonathan Swift's classic story about the land of Lilliput and its tiny inhabitants. Mailroom loser Lemuel Gulliver (Jack Black) is stuck in a dead-end job and living a dead-end life until the promotion of a fellow employee spurs him to speak up and take action. While a trip to the Bermuda Triangle may not be the date with crush Darcy Silverman (Amanda Peet) that Gulliver had envisioned, the voyage promises to take his career in a new direction, and it eventually delivers him to a kingdom known as Lilliput, which is populated by miniature people. After initially being captured and locked away in a dungeon, Gulliver wins the hearts of the Lilliputian people by saving their princess (Emily Blunt) from being kidnapped and rescuing their king (Billy Connolly) from a fire in a most unorthodox and unsavoury way, and he quickly finds himself in a position of gigantic influence. Problem is, Gulliver is completely unprepared and unqualified for his new leadership roles, both on the personal and professional levels, and his ineptitude puts himself and all of Lilliput in extreme danger. Grade-school humour abounds in this fairly mindless film, something Jack Black always excels at, but viewers will find that the chuckles and the message about the power of believing in oneself fade equally as fast as the credits roll. The Man Who Sued God defies simple definition, managing to be several types of movie all at the same time. As a theological-romantic-comedy-drama, it's in a somewhat unique category all of its own. Perhaps only Billy Connolly could carry off a central role that combines slapstick with raging anger, puppy-dog disappointment and strong language delivered in his distinctive accent. These facets of performance are used and abused in a tale that feels like it really ought to be based on a true story, but isn't. Connolly's life as a fisherman is sunk by the destruction of his boat by a bolt of lightning. The insurance company won't pay up because it falls under that age-old excuse of being an "Act of God". So Connolly decides to sue the deity. The premise raises issues about how the law and the church have apparently conspired together. But at heart the film is a simple character study, so any pondering on legal or theological implications will have to be done on your own time; the screen is occupied with family issues, underhand dealings and a maybe-maybe romance with Judy Davis. Big Yin fans at least will enjoy the Connolly's composite character. --Paul Tonks

Billy Connolly's travel programmes have some difficulty deciding if they are records of his stand-up tours or travelogues interrupted by the occasional comedy routine. Fortunately in his World Tour of England, Ireland and Wales the two elements complement one another more often than they distract from each other. This series, which sees Connolly traversing the respective countries on his trademark motorised tricycle, is agreeable if ultimately insubstantial viewing. That Connolly is an engaging presenter is no surprise: he has, after all, constructed a successful career from an ability to get large numbers of strangers to like him. However, probably due to the here-today-gone-tomorrow logistics of touring, his insights into the places he visits tend to be fleeting and predictable: in Dublin he plays the banjo in a pub, in Belfast he visits the shipyards and the more picturesque Republican and Loyalist neighbourhoods, in London he climbs the tower at Westminster Palace that houses Big Ben, and so on. Nobody who watches this, especially, if they have any first-hand knowledge of the cities, is going to learn anything they didn't already know. As if in acknowledgement of the lack of narrative weight, there are an awful lot of lingering aerial shots of the locations. But with less money spent on helicopter hire, and more time to get to grips with the locations and, more crucially, the people who live in them, Connolly could do much better than this. On the DVD:: Billy Connolly's World Tour on disc has a clever and witty interactive menu map of the countries visited that also offers an assortment of random trivia relating to each location. The special features are a link to Connolly's official Web site, and a chance to hear some of the music from the series in isolation. --Andrew Mueller
