Starring Mel Gibson in his second Hollywood film, The River celebrates traditional American values through the Garvey family's determination to hold onto their farm against all odds. The drama opens with the threat of flooding from the river that adjoins the Garvey's land, then depicts their struggles through ailing livestock, accident and risk of crop failure. Add to these a local businessman, Scott Glenn, planning to turn the valley into a dam, a subplot echoing Deliverance (1972), also filmed in Eastern Tennessee, and all the elements are in place for an emotional triumph-over-adversity movie. Much of The River has a realistic tone, unflinchingly depicting numerous hardships, especially when Gibson has to earn extra money as a strike-breaking hired hand in a steel mill. Against this, and a surprisingly left-wing tone advocating cooperation over competition, the more upbeat moments resort to feel-good cliché with John Williams' lilting score seemingly wandered in from a Spielberg fantasy. Nevertheless the cast, including Sissy Spacek as Gibson's wife, deliver first-rate performances and cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond expertly captures the harshness and the beauty of the land. The River was one of a trio of major US farming movies in 1984, the others being Country and Places in the Heart. On the DVD: The 1.85:1 anamorphically enhanced image is virtually flawless, capturing the many subtle effects of light on water throughout the film. Released theatrically in stereo, the opening and closing sequences demonstrate the power of a Dolby Digital 5.1 remix in generating atmosphere through natural sound. Elsewhere the audio is less striking, but always clean and powerful. Extras are routine: the US trailer, four brief biographies, and interesting though short production notes. --Gary S. Dalkin

IT’S ALL ABOUT FITTING IN After producing Stuart Gordon’s hit Re-Animator Brian Yuzna (Bride of Re-Animator Return of the Living Dead III) turned his hand to directing with 1989’s Society and gave birth to one of the ickiest most original body horror shockers of all time. This emotionally-charged film celebrates the triumph of a young rural couple as they face nature's greatest ravages the threat of poverty and a wrenching separation. Sissy Spacek Mel Gibson and Scott Glenn star in this moving tribute to love faith determination and the vanishing America of the independent farm family. Tom and Mae Garvey (Gibson and Spacek) are struggling to keep their homestead safe from the local power authority who wants to flood their land. When Mae's former beau John Wade (Glenn) turns out to be in charge of the plan to acquire the property tensions run high climaxing in a devastating confrontation on the flooded river banks. Directed by On Golden Pond's Mark Rydell 'The River' features magnificent location photography by Vilmos Zsigmond and an outstanding score by John Williams.
The lowest point in Disney's opportunistic revisionism of source stories for its animated features in the 1990s, Pocahontas presents the title character (voiced by Irene Bedard) as a voluptuous Indian babe who falls for the British plunderer Captain John Smith (Mel Gibson). Half-baked if trendy paganism abounds in the film's depiction of nature as possessing consciousness (though talking trees certainly aren't new to cartoons). But the dubious legitimacy of the film's premise and characterisations calls everything into question. The songs by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz--while Oscar-winning--fall short of the standard Menken achieved in superior Disney predecessors including The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. --Tom Keogh
VH-1's Storytellers series has brought a number of stars back into the limelight and, nine years since his last album, Billy Idol was ready for the re-focus. His music and image were always the perfect synthesis of 1950s rock & roll and 70s punk, giving his songs an enduring appeal. Here he takes a number or two to get going, but from "Flesh for Fantasy" onwards, this is a greatest hits package high on entertainment and musicianship. Steve Stevens, whose gritty yet intricate guitar gave the first three Idol albums their edge, is on hand, as is a backing-band which catches the mood of each song unerringly. Highlights include stripped-down versions of "White Wedding" and "Rebel Yell", an electro-acoustic rethink of the soulful "Eyes Without a Face"--a candidate for the perfect pop song?--and a sprinkling of songs by Generation X who, along with The Buzzcocks, were always the Pop Punk band of choice. Idol introduces several of the songs with street-wise bonhomie. The sneer may have lessened over time, but the attitude hasn't faded. On the DVD: Storytellers--Billy Idol on disc has a 4:3 picture format that captures the relaxed atmosphere, with Dolby Digital 5.1, 2.0 and DTS surround sound options. Thirty-two access points enable you to select the music without the chat, with subtitles in five European languages. The artist profile is brief but to the point and reproductions of album covers liven up the discography. Questions from the audience--a frequent Storytellers slot--are excluded, but it's a small omission. --Richard Whitehouse
