  • She's So Lovely [1997]She's So Lovely | DVD | (08/04/2002) from £13.17   |  Saving you £4.81 (47.25%)   |  RRP £14.99

This film springs from a long-neglected script by the late John Cassavetes. The script was directed by his son Nick and stars Sean Penn, who was set to star before the elder Cassavetes died. Penn plays Eddie, an alcoholic ne'er-do-well who loves his young wife Maureen (Robin Wright Penn) too much. When she is brutalised by a neighbour, Eddie goes nuts--and lands in a mental hospital for 10 years. When he is freed, he finds Maureen remarried to contractor Joey (John Travolta), with whom she has two children. But Eddie's love is too strong not to draw him back to her and make one final plea for her affection. A great showcase for all of the actors involved (the cast includes James Gandolfini, Harry Dean Stanton and Gena Rowlands), with a particularly fine performance by Sean Penn. The film has the make-it-up-as-you-go feeling of John Cassavetes's work, as well as the kind of naked emotions that were his hallmark.--Marshall Fine

This wonderfully warm and moving drama features Bobby Henrey, the young star of Carol Reed's The Fallen Idol, Muriel Aked and Oscar nominee Oskar Werner in the story of an exploited child prodigy whose unhappy existence is transformed by the daring plan of his loving governess. Featuring Robert Krasker's gorgeous cinematography, The Wonder Kid is presented here in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements, in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio.Orphan Sebastian Giro, a famous and gifted child pianist, leads an unnatural, highly restricted existence in the clutches of his crooked manager, Mr Gorik. When Miss Frisbie, Sebastian's elderly English governess, confronts Gorik about his activities, he dismisses her from her position. Undaunted, the kindly old lady enlists the help of a gang of small-time crooks, and plots a dramatic ruse that will change Sebastian's life forever...SPECIAL FEATURES:[] Image gallery[] Original pressbook PDF

  • Captain Jack [1998]Captain Jack | DVD | (11/02/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

Based loosely on a true story, Captain Jack is an Ealing-style whimsical comedy-drama about the triumph of everyday eccentrics. Captain Jack (Bob Hoskins) is a Whitby boat captain sick of hearing how the he wants to celebrate his predecessor's "discovery" of the Arctic by recreating his voyage on its 200th anniversary. Jack breaks harbour regulations and finds himself on the run from the Coastguard and Navy, accompanied by a crew of landlubbers including sisters played by Anna Massey and Gemma Jones. Sadie Frost is a passionate young stowaway who has her eye on Aussie Peter McDonald, while making up the party is David Troughton. Back on shore there are entertaining supporting roles for Patrick Malahide, Michelle Dotrice and Maureen Lipman, wife of writer Jack Rosenthal. Rosenthal screenplay isn't especially amusing, but he does manage to pack in all the expected feel-good developments, as well as including appropriate Dracula (1979) and Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) jokes. There's a whale, a pair of polar bears, a storm, lots of bonding and a gruff but warm-hearted sensibility throughout. Another winning piece of entertainment from Yorkshire, the county that gave the world The Full Monty. On the DVD: the only extra is a terribly British trailer, presented non-anamorphically. The main feature however is presented in an excellent 1.77:1 anamorphically enhanced widescreen transfer. The picture is crisp and detailed, with not a blemish anywhere. The stereo sound is everything this kind of film needs without being in anyway spectacular. --Gary S Dalkin

  • Live At The Max [DVD]Live At The Max | DVD | (02/11/2009) from £13.77   |  Saving you £1.22 (8.10%)   |  RRP £14.99

This 1991 concert film was shot in the IMAX format and was originally presented on enormous IMAX screens, with outstanding visual and audio clarity. The dimensions may have been scaled down for this DVD release, but the show is still huge in energy and talent. Filmed during a European leg of the Rolling Stones' Steel Wheels tour, this production boasts 15 songs and an extraordinary stage set with inflatable floozies (for "Honky Tonk Woman") and wild dogs (rather cleverly for "Street Fighting Man"). The Stones' set emphasises material from the late 1960s and early 70s ("Tumbling Dice", "Happy", "You Can't Always Get What You Want"), but the band's performance is so furious that the show is far from a pandering oldies act. Highlights include "Paint it Black", at once brutal and delicate, as well as a muscular "Rock and a Hard Place", a psychedelicised "2,000 Light Years from Home", and a cheeky "It's Only Rock 'n' Roll". Once kings of a gloriously sloppy sound, the Stones prove to be as effective in their artistic maturity with small, breathtaking touches as they are with chunky orchestration. Guitarists Keith Richards and Ron Wood play as if they are of one mind, Richards providing powerful leads while his partner captures some of the texture of the group's original recordings. Bassist Bill Wyman, still in the band at this phase, offers wit and an encyclopaedic grasp of rhythm & blues history, while drummer Charlie Watts adds control and swing. Mick Jagger prowls, climbs around the set, and delivers all the charismatic goods for adoring audiences, even touching the forbidden fruit again in a feverish performance of "Sympathy for the Devil". The DVD also includes a full Stones discography. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

The publicity campaign surrounding The Outlaw's release was a masterpiece. Armed with stills of 19-year-old Jane Russell revealing a remarkable dcolletage (while stopping to pick up a pair of milk pails!) Producer/Director Howard Hughes spent tens of thousands of dollars purposely to agitate the censors and arouse public indignation. He released the film independently in San Francisco in 1943 after United Artists refused to distribute it; it was quickly closed down by civic groups.
