  In 1903, under the gathering storm clouds of the Russo-Japanese War, a young Scotswoman is trapped in a loveless marriage far away from home. Adapted by Oscar-winning Dangerous Liaisons writer Christopher Hampton from Oswald Wynd's novel, The Ginger Tree is a lavish mini-series set in England, Japan and Taiwan. In 1903, Mary MacKenzie (Samantha Bond) joins her aloof diplomat fiancé in Manchuria. She marries him and finds herself in a war zone. Disenchanted with her husband, she finds herself drawn to a Japanese aristocrat, Count Kentaro (Daisuke Ryû). She scandalously becomes pregnant with his child and chooses to travel with her lover to Japan. Little does she know that Count Kentaro is already married, making Mary no more than a ˜concubine'. Even worse, she is mortified to ind she will not be allowed to keep her child. So begins Mary's forty-year saga, during which she strives to carve out a place for herself in Japanese society. Throughout the ordeal, she faces a constant cultural cold shoulder, both as a woman and as a Westerner.

  As a tale of self-discovery, Silkwood, Mike Nichols' 1982 biopic of the plutonium factory worker who uncovered negligence and dangerous practices at the heart of her employer's company, works well enough. Karen Silkwood (Meryl Streep) is no saint. She drinks, cheerfully gets 'em out for the boys, has left her husband and kids and lives in a curious ménage à trois with her lover, (Kurt Russell) and their lesbian friend (Cher). But, through her own dawning suspicions, she is drawn into union activism and embarks on a crusade to expose the rottenness of her paymasters, only to die in a mysterious car crash. And here is the flaw. The film can't decide whether it's quirky soap opera, a campaigning blow for the anti-nuclear lobby or an allegory for the conflict between the rights of the individual and the demands of the corporate giant. It stops short of providing some important conclusions about what really happened to its central character, and why. Streep is fine though, injecting her character with a studied mixture of innate intelligence and trailer park trash. Russell offers solid support and Cher is outstanding as housemate Dolly Pelliker. Their performances give Silkwood its heart as a powerful human drama. On the DVD: Silkwood is well-served on this DVD release by sharp picture and sound quality (Georges Delerue's poignantly jaunty country and western soundtrack benefits in particular), but the extras are static and add little to the package apart from a strictly "budget" feel: standard biographies of the stars and director with some pretty pointless trivia facts, and a brief history of the production. There's nothing here that even the most generalist of film fans won't already know. A director's commentary explaining why the film loses its bottle in the final reel would be more interesting. --Piers Ford

  Filmed at their Royal Albert Hall debut gig in September 2000--actually a media junket launching Bond to music industry execs--Bond Live is a slick showcase for four classically trained ex-session musicians' fusion of string quartet and rock music. Whatever the hype, four beautiful women wearing scanty tops and dancing with violins while backed by a five-piece rock combo and small, rarely seen string section, has nothing to do with making classical music cool and everything to do with sex. No heterosexual male is going to have any difficulty remaining glued to the screen, especially during "Duel" in which first and second violins Haylie Ecker and Eos trade licks "guitar hero" style. Further setting classical claims aside, most of the tracks are new instrumentals written by Magnus Fiennes or Tonci Huljic for the album Born, though "The 1812" does manage to reduce Tchaikovsky's overture to a five-minute dance number. With rock-show lighting, synthesisers, dance beats, band members chatting to the audience and a finale involving the "James Bond Theme" followed by a Rio-style fiesta for the closing "Victory--Carnival Mix" this is camp, melodramatic, sexy fun for lads everywhere. Purr-fect for a double bill with Josie and the Pussycats. On the DVD: The hour-long gig is presented with a very clear anamorphically enhanced 1.77:1 image, which despite the often low lighting is packed with detail and largely free of grain and artefacts. The Dolby Digital 5.1 sound is exceptionally full with very powerful bass. Special features include three music videos and a section going behind the scenes of the shoot for the "Victory" video, though two of these can only be accessed by working through a 10-part multimedi a quiz. The 13 minutes of interviews are standard promotional trivia, though the gallery of 10 studio-posed full-screen photographs will raise pulse rates.
