To commemorate Bette's 100th birthday here are six films from her heyday: In This Our Life (Dir. John Huston) (1942): A young woman Stanley (Bette Davis) dumps her fiance Craig (George Brent) and runs off with her sister's husband Peter (Dennis Morgan). They marry settle in Baltimore and Stanley ultimately drives Peter to drink and suicide. Stanley returns home to Richmond only to learn that her sister and old flame have fallen in love and plan to marry. The jealous and selfish Stanley attempts to win back Craig's affections but her true character is revealed when she attempts to pin a hit and run accident on the young black clerk who works in Craig's law office. The Old Maid (Dir. Edmund Goulding) (1939): This is the sad story of Charlotte (Bette Davis) a woman whose circumstances force her to give up her illegitimate child and pose as the childs old maid aunt thereby facing a lifetime of maternal sacrifice. Miriam Hopkins provides effective counterbalance with her portrayal of Charlottes effusive cousin who raises the little girl. All This And Heaven Too (Dir. Anatole Litvak) (1940): A first-rate drama about a 19th century nobleman who falls in love with his childrens' governess and murders his wife The Great Lie (Dir. Edmund Goulding) (1941): After a newlywed's husband apparently dies in a plane crash she discovers that her rival for his affections is now pregnant with his child. Watch On The Rhine (Dir. Herman Shumlin and Hal Mohr) (1943): Set during WW2. An anti-Nazi leader escapes with his wife to America only to find himself being pursued and blackmailed by Nazi agents. Deception (Dir. Irving Rapper) (1946): Based on Louis Verneuils 1928 play Jealousy the film tells the story of pianist Christine Radcliffe separated from her great love cellist Karel Novak by World War II. Unexpectedly reunited with him Christine desperately strives to hide her wartime dalliance as the mistress of a wealthy sadistic composer (Rains) with devastating results. All films come with the extra content 'Warner Night At The Movies' - a special selection of extras that recreate the movie going experience of the time with newsreel footage featurettes and contemporary cartoons and trailers

  • 20th Century Epics: Ben Hur / Gone With The Wind / Doctor Zhivago [1940]20th Century Epics: Ben Hur / Gone With The Wind / Doctor Zhivago | DVD | (05/11/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £39.99

Three of the 20th century's greatest cinematic spectacles, 1939's Gone with the Wind, 1959's Ben-Hur and 1965's Doctor Zhivago, are collected here in one irresistible box set. Long before computers turned every crowd scene and every grandiose backdrop into a pixellated virtual construct, these movies did it all for real. Nothing can substitute for their authentic sense of what really makes an epic: strong characters, emotionally involving storytelling and the grandest, most romantic sense of large-scale moviemaking. All three contain sequences and images that are indelibly burned into popular consciousness. Just recall Vivien Leigh's walk through the wounded of Atlanta, or her pledge never to be hungry again silhouetted against an achingly vivid sunset. Remember Charlton Heston rowing the Roman galley, or charging round the arena in his chariot. Or the enigmatic beauty of Julie Christie, the train ride to the Urals and the charge into No Man's Land. On the DVDs: These priceless treasures from the MGM archives have been preserved and restored so marvellously that all three almost look like they were made last year, not decades ago. The vivid colours and detail of Gone with the Wind look astoundingly fresh in this anamorphic 1.33:1 print (just let your eyes drink in those burnished skies). Both Ben-Hur and Zhivago, too, benefit from anamorphic widescreen presentations that reveal every last gorgeous detail. All three discs also contain the full music scores, complete with Overtures and Intermission music: Max Steiner's immortal "Tara Theme" sounds as good as ever on the rich mono soundtrack; Miklos Rozsa's magnificent music for Ben-Hur is deservedly regarded as one of cinema's finest, while Maurice Jarre's famous "Lara's Theme" can even be heard in a separate music-only track on Zhivago. There are no extras on the Gone with the Wind disc, but the other two contain commentaries (from Charlton Heston and Omar Sharif respectively) and new, in-depth making-of documentaries. Zhivago also comes with a second bonus disc that has several contemporary behind-the-scenes pieces. The only moan is the infamous Warner packaging, which consists of their notorious cardboard sleeves that are easily damaged when trying to cram them into the thin cardboard slipcases. --Mark Walker

Live at the Royal Albert Hall finds Culture Club celebrating their 20th anniversary with an infectious and expansive grandeur, all while basking in the love of adoring fans. The show actually starts with a great joke on the audience: Boy George, looking not a day over 20, glides onstage in his once-trademark derby and beaded hair extensions, delivering a warm and welcome vocal on "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?" The startled crowd soon realises he's an impersonator. The real, fortysomething George O'Dowd, looking a lot less androgynous and a tad thicker than in his New Romantic days, smiles self-deprecatingly and launches into a pleasing set of white soul ("Cold Shoulder", "Miss Me Blind"), stark gospel ("That's the Way"), stirring raga-rock ("Bow Down Mister") and even a classic (a lovely cover of Bowie's "Starman", complete with audience participation and muscular guitar by Roy Hay). It's a fine show all around. --Tom Keogh
