As the investigations of Inspector Bonny (Claude Rich) reveal Stavisky's life was the perfect sham which took in businessmen financiers and politicians of all persuasions. Eschewing a straight historical biopic Resnair and writer Jorge Semprn (Z) restrict the scope of the film to the last few months of Stavisky's eventful life covering his spectacular fall from grace. A work of rare technical brilliance in which the period detail is impeccable Stavisky's score is courtesy of Stephen Sondheim.

To do so, he recruits a talented young woodcarver named Tank (Josh Green). But Magrew's plans get complicated when his daughter (appealingly played by Emily Harrison) falls for the young man. Fans of the Puppet Master series will probably enjoy this sixth instalment. The three leads are well cast, the production design shows some imagination, and the script works--until the abrupt and nonsensical ending. The puppets also seem less animated than in previous films; nevertheless, they still manage to get their whacks in. This charming satire aided by a wonderful script taking in snobbery upstairs downstairs and in the middle classes is given a jolly run around by a cast comprising most of Hollywood's British stalwarts from Sir C Aubrey Smith and Peter Lawford to Sara Allgood and Una O'Connor.
