Airwolf appeared only two years after Knight Rider and, perplexingly, the same year as the short-lived Blue Thunder series. However, creator Donald P Bellisario had spent more than a little time in fully conceptualising this series. Although the format allowed for stories-of-the-week, a B-plot always ran as background motivation for the individual tales. This was a trick Bellisario would also use to good effect later in Magnum P.I. and Quantum Leap. The hook that sustains the audience here is an extremely bitter sub-plot: Stringfellow Hawke (Jan-Michael Vincent) is a peculiar anti-hero to root for since he is effectively being held to ransom and doing the same in return. His brother St. John is held captive somewhere and until his release the Airwolf chopper is Hawke's to keep hidden and use under the covert instructions of "Archangel". His best friend Dominic Santini (the ever-appealing Ernest Borgnine) is a surrogate father figure caught up in the family history. All this pre-determined angst means this is never a show that plays itself for laughs. Very specific character flaws are upfront from the beginning. We are hammered over the head with the idea of Hawke being a tortured intellectual; hence the cello, log cabin retreat and inability to smile. Of course the real star is the spurious technology showcased in the Mach One helicopter armed to the teeth and able to defy the laws of physics on a regular basis. As the mid-80s looked increasingly to the lighter side in most television successes, Airwolf is a rare display of aggression. Justice is fought, but dig only a little way and the moral motivations are often in question. Toward the end of its third season things began to lose coherence and after a year's pause the show was magically resurrected with an all-new cast. It didn't last. --Paul Tonks

Lee 2005): Full of the humour mild humiliation and bittersweet lessons of growing up this coming-of-age comedy from Malcolm D. Lee unfolds on the South Side of 1970's Chicago. Xavier (Bow Wow) and his wisecracking crew of friends rule the local roller skating rink but when it closes their summer looks to be an empty one. Reluctantly they head over to Sweetwater the glitzy rink across town where the rich kids skate and where the cocky Sweetness (Wesley Jonathan) presides over all as the unchallenged king of the floor. The boys are ridiculed upon their arrival and soon vow revenge at the upcoming competition for which they begin to hone their skills. Meanwhile X deals with his troubles at home as his mother has recently died and his dad Curtis (Chi McBride) struggles to make ends meet. The two attempt to understand each others' grief and help one another to move beyond it. X also makes the acquaintance of new kid Tori (Jurnee Smollett) a gawky girl with braces and a sharp tongue who tags along with the boys as an ugly duckling later to emerge a swan. Tori's rather attractive mum (Kellita Smith) attracts a great deal of attention on the block notably from two quick-talking garbage men (Mike Epps and Charles Q. Murphy in a hilarious bit part) and X tries to navigate his budding relationship with the seemingly-unattainable Naomi (Meagan Good).

  • Jackass - The Complete [2002]Jackass - The Complete | DVD | (11/08/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £34.99

This box set contains Jackass: The Movie plus Volumes 2 and 3 of Jackass the TV show. Jackass is very probably the most perfectly named programme in the history of television. The cult MTV hit is the sort of exceedingly stupid thing that can only be the work of clever people; in this case, a collection of old-enough-to-know-better delinquents who appear to have taken the wisdom about the dumbing-down of popular culture as a challenge. The difference between Jackass and most dumb things on television is that other dumb things on television like to pretend that they're arch, or clever, or at the very least camp. Jackass makes no such pretensions, and for this reason it is incredibly liberating and funny. There is no subtext to any of this. Johnny Knoxville and company think of something supremely idiotic to do, and do it. We see them riding down hills on ice blocks, inviting a fire crew to turn their hoses on them, and trying to ride bicycles around a 360-degree wooden loop while dressed as chickens. That only one cast member ends up hospitalised is little short of miraculous, and surely proof that God loves his clowns. --Andrew Mueller
