Two features. In 'Underworld', a dark and Gothic monster action movie, vampires and lycans an ancient form of werewolf are at war. While the vampires inhabit a gigantic castle that houses their ancestors' tombs, the lycans live underground in a dilapidated sewer cave. Both teams are equipped with big guns, and they are constantly innovating deadlier bullets to gain advantage over each other. On the vampire side, the leather-clad death agent Selene (Kate Beckinsale) delegates teams of vampires to attack the lycans. But when she discovers that the lycans have kidnapped a human medical student, Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman), she knows the worst is on its way. Against the orders of her superior, Kraven (Shane Brolly), who is obsessively in love with Selene, she awakens the most powerful vampire of all time, Viktor (Bill Nighy) and prepares for a massive feud against lycan leader Lucian (Michael Sheen). Director Len Wiseman offers a tough, fast, and gory addition to the horror-fantasy genre with 'Underworld'. Impressive special effects show the lycans transforming from humans to werewolves, and the lycans' ability to squeeze silver bullets out of their skin is also rudely fascinating. Beckinsale is captivating in the role of the lead vamp, with her leather corset, pouty expressions, and double-fisted pistols perfectly communicating the glam-action mood of the film. Also includes 'Underworld: Evolution'.

  • The Day The World Ended [2001]The Day The World Ended | DVD | (27/05/2002) from £6.73   |  Saving you £13.26 (66.30%)   |  RRP £19.99

A far-fetched combination of psychological thriller and over-the-top horror movie, The Day the World Ended is a brash, rather ham-fisted piece of work. With Nastassja Kinski leading the cast, the odds were never on this being an example of great cinema, but Terence Gross's film is exceptionally ridiculous in parts. The director manages to pull a range of clich├ęs out of the bag, from the Lynchian small-town American weirdos to the handy thunder storm during moments of high drama. The premise of a lonely, gifted child hiding a dark secret has been explored before but never quite to such a bizarre extent--the events involved here leading to a gory, tasteless finale. Kinski sleepwalks her way through her role with little conviction, matched by Randy Quaid's caricature villain. Much is made of the special effects skills of Stan Winston (Jurassic Park, Terminator 2), but without any degree of budget, his efforts are merely terrifyingly ordinary. On the DVD: one thing becomes clear from the DVD version of the film--despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary, the makers of The Day the World Ended consider it a fine example of the genre. The audio commentary from producers Winston and Shane Mahan is especially self-reverential, even going so far at one point as to praise the film's great character acting. A hectic visual style and suitably monstrous sound effects it may have (all admittedly enhanced by the digital format), but great character acting it does not. Likewise, there is an in-depth feature on the rather shoddy special effects. The last thing anybody wanted, the earnest voiceover tells us, was for the monster to look like some guy in a rubber suit. --Phil Udell

  • Predators - Play Exclusive [Blu-ray]Predators - Play Exclusive | Blu Ray | (01/11/2010) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £28.99

Executive producer Robert Rodriguez (Grindhouse, Spy Kids) is the driving force behind this energetic reboot of the popular Predator films, which pits the dreadlocked alien hunters against a rogues' gallery of human antiheroes, led by a bulked-up Adrien Brody. The Oscar winner acquits himself nicely in the role of a gritty mercenary who finds himself stranded on a jungle planet with a host of criminals and professional killers (among them such scene-stealers as Walton Goggins and Danny Trejo), as well as a seemingly innocent doctor, well played by Topher Grace. They've been deposited there to serve as living targets for a horde of Predators--whose looks, designed by Gregory Nicotero and Howard Berger, are impressively varied and sleek--that use the planet as their private hunting grounds. Laurence Fishburne is also on hand as a soldier who has managed to survive for years in the jungle; he, Brody, and Grace do much to make the pulpy dialogue by Alex Litvak and Michael Finch (adapting a premise penned by Rodriguez in the mid-'90s) palatable. Likewise, Hungarian director Nimrod Antal (Vacancy) lends a great deal of atmosphere and Rodriguez-style momentum to the picture--perhaps more than necessary, since the end result is, like the 1987 original with Arnold Schwarzenegger, a fun B-movie and nothing more, designed entirely to give moviegoers a slick, unchallenging roller-coaster ride. Having said that, it's a vast improvement over the 1990 sequel and the dreadful tie-ins with the Alien franchise, and should provide movie monster aficionados with an afternoon's worth of thrills. --Paul Gaita
