  • Bon Jovi - Crush Tour [2000]Bon Jovi - Crush Tour | DVD | (28/05/2001) from £6.86   |  Saving you £5.13 (74.78%)   |  RRP £11.99

    If ever there was a band made for massive rock shows, its Bon Jovi--and The Crush Tour is here to prove it. So the veteran band lacks the sheer charisma of fellow Jerseyite Bruce Springsteen, or certain other distinctive qualities--U2's impassioned social conscience, say, or R.E.M.'s self-conscious weirdness--of others who made it big in the 1980s. Bon Jovi is, by objective definition, a journeyman band. But that's not a bad thing. They specialise in the kind of hook-heavy, unpretentious anthems ideally suited for stadium crowds, and that's exactly what they deliver to the 50,000 fans packed into a Zurich, Switzerland, venue on their 2000 European tour, who pump their fists, wave their arms, and sing along from beginning to end, undeterred by the steady rain that falls throughout the show. It's a safe bet that no one there went home disappointed, and neither will the Bon Jovi fans who pick up this great-sounding, well-directed DVD. Singer Jon Bon Jovi, guitarist Richie Sambora and company hit the ground running, opening with two of their catchiest hits, "Livin' on a Prayer" and "You Give Love a Bad Name," before rolling through seven tunes from 2000's Crush their first album in five years, and a host of other Bon Jovi ballads and rockers. And if the 20 songs from the two-hour concert begin to sound the same, you can always switch to the host of DVD bonus features, including a 30-minute "on tour" documentary, a photo gallery, a complete discography (including solo albums), and two song videos. A splendid time is guaranteed for all, more or less, so pull out your Bics and get ready to flick!--Sam Graham Description: After several years of being casually on and off, New Jersey rockers Bon Jovi came together for the 2000 Crush Tour. Filmed live on this tour, The Crush Tour video features a raucous, energetic performance of several of the band's greatest hits, plus a couple that lead singer Jon Bon Jovi released during a successful solo career. Songs performed include the rock ballad "Wanted Dead or Alive", "Bad Medicine", "Born to Be My Baby", and the hit that propelled them into fame, "Runaway". Songs: "Livin' on a Prayer", "You Give Love a Bad Name", "Captain Crash" and the "Beauty Queen from Mars", "Say It Isn't So", "One Wild Night", "Born to Be My Baby", "It's My Life", "Bed of Roses", "Two Story Town", "Just Older", "Runaway", "Lay Your Hands on Me", "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead", "Bad Medicine", "I'll Be There for You", "Next 100 Years", "Someday I'll Be Saturday Night", "Keep the Faith".

    Live at Le Grand Rex features a wildly enjoyable and often unexpected concert performance by ex-Roxy Music front man and prolific solo artist Bryan Ferry. The setting is Paris in the spring of 2000, starring Ferry and about a dozen musicians mixing the avant-garde, Tin Pan Alley and a delirious pop mélange for the kind of passionate European audience that gave Roxy Music, during the early 1970s, its first commercial and critical boost outside the UK. Backed by brass, piano, percussion, the occasional guitar and a string section comprised of beautiful Muses (you must see it to understand...), Ferry glides through a handful of Rodgers & Hart, Cole Porter and Kern & Fields standards, then hits the ground running on a slate of his own classic compositions from the last three decades: "Chance Meeting", "The Only Face" and "Avalon" among others. Not the strongest of singers, Ferry is often drowned out by the sheer stamina of his backup band. But it's impossible, still, not to be transported by the stylish earnestness and whiff of decadence in his soaring vocals. Highlights include Roxy's rather wonderful cover of John Lennon's "Jealous Guy" and the essential disco anthem "Love Is the Drug". On the DVD: modest DVD supplements include a discography and a cute feature that identifies the musicians by face. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

  • Blue Lamp, The / The Nanny [1965]Blue Lamp, The / The Nanny | DVD | (23/06/2003) from £14.99   |  Saving you £1.00 (6.67%)   |  RRP £15.99

    This is a double-feature of two British crime classics, The Blue Lamp (1949) and The Nanny (1965). The Blue Lamp is the film that introduced PC George Dixon, played by Jack Warner, later immortalised in the BBC's long-running Dixon of Dock Green (1955-76). Here Dixon's murder is the catalyst for an exciting London manhunt, shot largely on location in a fast-moving, starkly efficient style showing the influence of The Naked City (1948). The war-damaged East End and the car chases through almost vehicle-free streets offer a documentary-like vision of a London now long gone, and a young Dirk Bogarde makes a serious impact in an early starring role. In contrast, The Nanny has a superstar, the imported Hollywood legend Bette Davis, in the declining years of her career. Just one of three psychological thrillers Hammer produced in 1965 (the others were Frantic and Hysteria), the film capitalises on the popularity of Davis's Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) with a comparable mix of hateful insanity and paranoia. The screenplay skilfully juggles the audience's sympathies between a superb Davis and the dysfunctional family of which she becomes a part, developing a powerful sense of dread which shows such clichéd later fare as The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992) how to do this sort of thing with real class. On the DVD: The Blue Lamp and The Nanny are presented in black and white with adequate mono sound. The Blue Lamp is in its original 4:3 ratio; The Nanny is cropped from its theatrical 1.85:1 to 4:3, though it's only in a few shots that it becomes obvious that information is missing at the sides of the screen. The print of The Blue Lamp is soft and grainy, while The Nanny is grainy with a considerable amount of flicker. There are no extras. --Gary S. Dalkin

    Set against the Iranian hostage crisis of 1979 and 1980, Ben Affleck’s Argo is a nerve-jangling footnote to the birth of Ayatollah Khomeini’s Islamic Republic. The movie opens at the crest of the 1979 revolution--the storming of the US embassy in Tehran, and the escape of six diplomats to the precarious safety of the Canadian ambassador’s residence. To the rescue is Tony Mendez--a composed CIA agent whose heroism remained classified until 1997--and his state-approved plan to get the stranded embassy staff out of Iran under a brazen cover story: they’re an innocent film crew on a location hunt for the fake sci-fi blockbuster Argo. Hollywood is usually pressed into the service of the state in the name of comedy (either burying dictators in Team America: World Police or just bad news in Barry Levinson’s Wag the Dog), but Argo is a true story, and the tone of Affleck's Oscar-winning script is carefully split, switching between mounting tension in consular Tehran and a satire of the Hollywood machine as fronted by Alan Arkin and John Goodman--two raffish producers hired by Mendez to reverse-engineer some convincing buzz for the Argo movie. Affleck himself takes the role of Mendez, the steady-eyed agent betting everything on Hollywood’s age-old efficiency at creating a media circus for a project long before it exists. ‘History starts out as farce and ends up a tragedy’, remarks Goodman, but Argo ends on a patriotic upbeat, and doesn’t reflect much on history. It politely nods at the context of Iran’s attitude to the West, and we’re told about but not shown--bar the blank rage of the revolutionary mob--Iran’s anger at the Westerly flow of resources under Shah Pahlavi. Instead, Argo concentrates on the eggshell complexities of deception in plain sight, including a climactic set-piece in which Mendez’ team must fend their way through layers of suspicious Iranian airport security--with imminent capture, execution and political calamity only on the other side of their paper-thin pretext. It may have the ring of historical escapism, but Argo holds its nerve as a great Hollywood escape. --Leo Batchelor /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman","serif";}
