A collection of three horror shorts from three of Asia's most revered directors: Fruit Chan Takashi Miike and Park Chan-Wook. This anthology offers three inventively chilling tales from three masters of Asian terror. Takashi Miike's Box presents us with a troubled writer haunted by the memory of her sisters death. Park Chan-wook's Cut delights in more revenge with a film extra deciding to torture a director and his wife. And the final terror tale is Fruit Chan's bite-size version of Dumplings.
Before Oldboy, before The Handmaiden, visionary filmmaker Park Chan-wook helmed this gripping tale of deceit, misunderstanding and the senselessness of war. Gunfire breaks out in the demilitarised zone between North and South Korea, leaving two North Korean soldiers dead while a wounded South Korean soldier (Lee Byung-hun, The Good, the Bad, the Weird) flees to safety. With the tenuous peace between the two warring nations on a knife-edge, a neutral team of investigators, headed by Swiss Army Major Sophie Jean (Lee Young-ae, Lady Vengeance), is dispatched to question both sides to determine what really happened under cover of darkness out in no-man's land. The recipient of multiple accolades, including Best Film at South Korea's 2001 Grand Bell Awards, JSA Joint Security Area showcases Park's iconic style in an embryonic form, and demonstrates that humanity and common purpose can be found in the most unlikely places. A firefight occurs at the 'Bridge Of No Return' in the Korean DMZ (De-Militarized Zone) where two North Korean soldiers are killed. The North claims that the incident was a flagrant attack by the South Koreans while the South claims that one of their soldiers was kidnapped. The only events that both sides confirm are that after a shoot-out and a wounded soldier stumbled out of a guard post in the pouring rain three North Korean soldiers have been struck down; two are dead the oth
Akira Kurosawa's rousing Seven Samurai was a natural for an American remake--after all, the codes and conventions of ancient Japan and the Wild West (at least the mythical movie West) are not so very far apart. Thus The Magnificent Seven effortlessly turns samurai into cowboys (the same trick worked more than once: Kurosawa's Yojimbo became Sergio Leone's A Fistful of Dollars). The beleaguered denizens of a Mexican village, weary of attacks by banditos, hire seven gunslingers to repel the invaders once and for all. The gunmen are cool and capable, with most of the actors playing them just on the cusp of '60s stardom: Steve McQueen, James Coburn, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn. The man who brings these warriors together is Yul Brynner, the baddest bald man in the West. There's nothing especially stylish about the approach of veteran director John Sturges (The Great Escape), but the storytelling is clear and strong, and the charisma of the young guns fairly flies off the screen. If that isn't enough to awaken the 12-year-old kid inside anyone, the unforgettable Elmer Bernstein music will do it: bum-bum-ba-bum, bum-ba-bum-ba-bum... Followed by three inferior sequels, Return of the Seven, Guns of the Magnificent Seven, and The Magnificent Seven Ride! --Robert Horton

With no cooperation from either side the case appears to be unsolvable. However Major Jean discovers that the number of bullets fired from the pistols and the number found at the scene differ and she begins to dig deeper into the backgrounds of the soldiers involved. Subsequently she finds out about a previous encounter involving the same two North Korean soldiers (Song Kang-ho Shin Ha-kyun) and their South Korean opponent Lee. With secrets from Major Jean's own past coming to the fore the story begins to unravel... A right-hand man wants revenge upon his boss, his henchmen... and anybody else who gets in the way!
Beginning with the forty minute version of Dumplings that includes newly shot footage as well as that taken from the feature length release director Fruit Chan explores society's obsession with youth and the lengths to which people will go to prolong it. The second segment is cut-directed by the irrepressible Park Chan-wook the story of a film extra with a grudge who forces a good-natured director to prove that deep down he has a nasty streak. The collection concludes with Box a ritualistic tale of a female novelist who is haunted by a childhood trauma directed by the cult legend Miike Takashi. Narrated almost without words amongst a series of eerie locations the film has all the hallmarks of its director.
