For Relic Hunter, star Tia Carrere was approached with the notion of playing "a female Indiana Jones". That perfectly sums up this tongue-in-cheek show. Each episode begins with a historical teaser depicting a relic in its original location and usage. It then gets stolen or lost and the team go hunt for it. Carrere's History Professor Sydney Fox is versed in arcane knowledge, but also knows how to hold her own in a fight. Her foppish assistant Nigel (Christien Anholt) always manages to bumble the search, but then gets helped out by office worker Claudia (Lindy Booth). That's the winning formula, and this first box set (which starts at the beginning of the second series) consists of six such scenarios. "The Put Back" requires the return of an artefact for a change, and sees the team in Africa racing to prevent the onset of an ancient curse. "Dagger of Death" concerns the Indian cult of Kali (per Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom). "Last of the Mochicas" (not a typo!) sees them survive a plane crash and then play a game of sleuthing to discover which other passenger is their enemy. "The Legend of the Lost" provides a well-intentioned message about why lost civilisations ought to be left lost. "Fertile Ground" comically takes Sydney from her high-school reunion to Hawaii in a partnership with her teenage sweetheart. "Gypsy Jigsaw" finally allows Claudia to shine, with her knowledge of Tarot assisting in a jaunt to Romania. All six feature terrific location shooting from around the globe and are an infectious introduction for anyone who missed the sporadic TV broadcasts. On the DVD: Relic Hunter comes to disc with the original 16:9 widescreen ratio of the show. Shame there's only a stereo mix, though. There are 12-minute interviews with stars Carrere and Anholt that are a little more informative than the biographies included. Lastly, there's a gallery of 24 behind-the-scenes and promotional stills. --Paul Tonks

  • Mozart: Cosi fan tutte [2000]Mozart: Cosi fan tutte | DVD | (30/06/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £29.99

Mozart's third and final opera with librettist Lorenzo da Ponte, the hugely ambitious dramatic comedy Così fan Tutte (roughly translated as: "They're All Like That"), is brought passionately to life in a first-class production conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt and featuring one of the great starring roles for Cecilia Bartoli. Filmed live at the Zurich Opera House in February 2000 on a set which visualises the subtitle "The School for Lovers", the plot revolves around two army officers arguing about the fidelity of their brides, then setting out to test their chastity. Despite the often playful humour, this is not only psychologically telling music-making, but reveals Mozart exploring the structure of opera, discarding convention to mix large ensemble sections with arias for as many different combinations of singers as possible. With Liliana Nikiteanu attractively contrasted with Bartoli, and thoroughly convincing performances by Roberto Sacca (Ferrando) and Oliver Widmer (Guilelmo), this Così has a freshness and flow which, coupled with the timeless romantic themes, feels very contemporary. On the DVD: the presentation, which includes an interesting 22-minute behind-the-scenes documentary, is spread over two DVDs. There is a multi-language booklet minus libretto, though there is the option to watch with English subtitles. Given the difficult live stage lighting conditions the 16:9 anamorphically enhanced picture is as good as can be expected. There are both stereo and Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtracks, though the latter gives the voices a disconcertingly disembodied character, leaving the former to be preferred. The total running time is approximately 213 minutes, not 275 minutes stated on the packaging. --Gary S Dalkin

  • Offenbach: La Belle Helene -- Zurich/Harnoncourt [1997]Offenbach: La Belle Helene -- Zurich/Harnoncourt | DVD | (25/09/2000) from £34.31   |  Saving you £-9.32 (N/A%)   |  RRP £24.99

Offenbach's operetta La Belle Hélene, which pokes fun at the Parisian upper class of a century and a half ago through tales of ancient Greece, requires a leap of imagination on behalf of today's audience that this production only partly succeeds in reconciling. On musical grounds we're on sure footing. Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducts the chorus and orchestra of the Zurich Opera House with his customary flair for precise and taut rhythms and an appreciation of the composer's wit and the good tunes that are a-plenty. His multi-national cast headed by Vesselina Kasarova as Helen of Troy and Deon van der Walt as her lover Paris are excellent and among the smaller parts there's a lively and stylish performance from Liliana Nichiteanus as Oreste. The video direction by Hartmut Schroder and the superb sound obtained from the relatively intimate Zurich Opera House, a delightful setting for this operetta, are further assets. The production alas is unenlightening and perpetrates an over-the-top style that seems to be synonymous with Offenbach. The backdrop, a pink concave awning is hideous. The costumes by designer Jean-Charles de Castelibajac are silly: Paris is dressed in lederhosen and looks a twerp, Calchac, the high priest wears a Ku Klux Klan hat and Helen at one point looks as though she'll take to absailing. Kasarova suggests the lure of Helen in her voice but a beauty she's not. So it's left to Harnoncourt who joins the company at the curtain call with a twinkle in his eye and a nifty side step and his superb orchestra to remind us what might have been. --Adrian Edwards

The prospect’s an enticing one: Frank with Ella Fitzgerald and Antonio Carlos Jobim backed up by Nelson Riddle’s fabulous orchestra. And on A Man and His Music we’re not disappointed. Sinatra shares two medleys with Ella, who is in magisterial form, and in between he sings a bossa nova medley to the accompaniment of Jobim’s guitar. The concert gets off to a cracking start with a Sinatra favourite "Day In Day Out", the arrangement emphasising the "drum-athon" theme of the show, whereby the rhythm section of the orchestra show off their prowess in a series of beat-driven arrangements. Sinatra sets this up with some amusing banter as we follow him to a rostrum where a superb bass player (unnamed) picks out the walking bass line of "Get Me to the Church On Time" which builds inexorably to a pounding finish. He then sings the bolero "What Now My Love?" to a brilliantly executed freewheeling trombone line, and recalls "Ol’ Man River" as though he were improvising it on the spot. Ella brings her heart and soul appropriately enough to "Body and Soul" before ripping up the joint with "It’s All Right with Me". In their first medley there are some happy exchanges between Ella and Frank. The medley ends with them chanting "Goin’ Out of My Head", a pop song likely to bring on a state of catatonic boredom. The Jobim medley has one unintentionally funny moment when Sinatra with cigarette in hand sings to Jobim Irving Berlin’s "Change Partners" ("Must you dance every dance, with the same fortunate man") without a flicker of expression. The second Ella/Frank medley is a corker led off by "The Song is You". The artists are so entertaining that you almost forget the backdrop, a hideous orange set. After a camp pirouette or two Sinatra sobers up by putting his dreams away. On the DVD: as with other discs in this series there is the obligatory trailer with Sinatra arriving at an empty sound stage, only for the picture to burst into life for a cut away shot of him singing "I’ve Got You Under My Skin". Subtitles are available. The soundtrack is perfectly respectable and wears its 30-odd years lightly. --Adrian Edwards
