  While not a direct follow-up to the 2008 shocker Mirrors, Mirrors 2 does indeed boast its share of evil, murderous mirrors. The kind that, when you stare into them, show you an image of yourself doing bloody deeds like chewing broken glass or committing a ritual disemboweling. Not pleasant, especially when the damage manifests itself for real. Said mirrors also add to the misery of an already wretched security guard, Max (Nick Stahl), who finds himself cursed with the ability to foresee these deadly encounters, which happen to his fellow employees at a new department store complex. Max is already having a tough time because his memories of a fatal car accident are a constant nightmare; that might explain why he looks so awful, and why the best he can do is a security guard job when his father (William Katt) actually owns the whole new development. Horror fans will not find much beyond this setup, as Max occasionally visits his shrink and sort of becomes a suspect in the rash of killings. The cast includes Christy Carlson Romano as an early victim and Emmanuelle Vaugier as the sister of a missing woman, but most of the movie is spent waiting around for the grotesque attacks--which do nothing to disrupt the overall tedium that prevails.--Robert Horton

  The turbulent lives of two handsome and high-priced Miami plastic surgeons may be one of the more unusual premises for a television series, but the FX Channel's Nip/Tuck combines sudsy sex and biting wit with the emotional quandaries involved in body modification in a way that makes for an engrossing--and occasionally gross--hourlong drama. The show benefits greatly from its two leads--Dylan Walsh as the troubled "good" surgeon and Julian McMahon as his predatory (but equally troubled) "bad" partner--as well as Joely Richardson as Walsh's wife and Roma Maffia as the surgeons' nurse. If Nip/Tuck does have a stumbling point, it's in its occasionally glib dialogue (series creator Ryan Murphy was a writer for the verbally flashy high school series Popular), which can clash with an episode's more dramatic and poignant moments. The show also doesn't shy away from showing the more gruesome aspects of plastic surgery, but viewers can often see more stomach-churning images on the top-rated CSI. But the strength of the performances and the originality of the premise make these rough spots manageable for viewers looking for an interesting spin on the usual "doctor show." --Paul Gaita

Roberts Blossom gives an alarmingly convincing performance as rural eccentric Ezra Cobb whose mother's death unhinges him to the point where he not only lovingly preserves her corpse in the living room but also goes out to find 'friends' to keep her company – not all of whom are dead when he finds them! Perversely Ezra's more worried about what mother would say about his various activities than he is about the prospect of being found out. Indeed like Gein he's cheerfully open about his activities when visiting friends but no-one believes him. Like Carnival of Souls and The Honeymoon Killers this is one of American horror cinema's great one-offs an eerie genuinely unsettling but also darkly comic experience.   Jack Arnold's horror classic The Creature from the Black Lagoon spawned not one but two iconic images: the web-footed humanoid gill-man with a hankering for women and the leggy, luscious Julia Adams, the object of his desire, swimming the lagoon in a luminous white bathing suit. Not since King Kong has the "beauty and the beast" theme been portrayed in such sexually charged (though chaste) terms. Arnold turns an effectively B-movie plot--a small expedition up a remote Amazon river captures a prehistoric amphibian man, who escapes to wreak havoc on the team and kidnap his bathing beauty--into a moody, stylish, low-budget feature. The jungle exteriors turn from exotic to treacherous when the creature blocks their passage and strands them in the wilds. Much of the film is shot underwater, where the murky dark is animated by shimmering shards of sunlight, creating images both lovely and alien (the studio-built sets of the creature's underground lair are far less naturalistic, but serve their purpose). As with most of Arnold's '50s genre films, he's saddled with a less than magnetic leading man (in this case the colorless but stalwart Richard Carlson) and a conventional script, but he overcomes such limitations by creating a vivid and sympathetic monster (helped immeasurably by a marvelous suit of scales and fins) and establishing a mood thick with atmosphere.
