The Ladykillers director Alexander Mackendrick's third Ealing farce is the final comedy produced by the famous British studio and one of its most celebrated. Like the equally applauded Kind Hearts And Coronets the film is more sophisticated and blacker in tone than typically lighthearted Ealing fare (such as Mackendrick's Whiskey Galore!). Alec Guinness stars as the superbly shifty toothily threatening Professor Marcus the leader of a crime ring planning a heist. Marcus rents rooms from a sweet eccentric old lady Mrs. Wilberforce (Katie Johnson) in her crooked London house. The professor and his co-conspirators blowhard Major Courtney (Cecil Parker) creepily suave Louis (Herbert Lom) chubby Harry (Peter Sellers) and muscleman One-Round (Danny Green) pose as an unlikely string quartet using the rooms for rehearsal. Dodging Mrs. Wilberforce's constant interruptions the hoods hit upon the idea to use her in the daring daylight robbery (filmed in and around London's King's Cross station). When the old girl discovers the truth Marcus and company cannot persuade her to stay buttoned up about it and thus decide to do her in. Accompanied by a noirish cacophony of screeching trains parrots and little old ladies at afternoon tea a series of unlikely events builds to the hilarious surprising finale.

The Robin Hood Of Modern CrimeThat was how The Saint was often promoted to entice readers, and it's a theme that his creator Leslie Charteris returns to a number of times in his books and stories. It was the publication of The Saint In New York in 1935 that made Charteris an international name. The film rights were sold even before publication and - despite some problem with the American censors over its violent content - became a hit picture for RKO in 1938. Charteris wanted Ronald Colman, Cary Grant or Douglas Fairbanks Jr for the role of Simon Templar. Instead, after Louis Hayward premiered the character, the much-respected George Sanders took on the role in four of the films, with Hugh Sinclair taking the lead in The Saint's Vacation and The Saint Meets The Tiger. The Saint's Vacation:Simon Templar (Hugh Sinclair), aka The Saint, and trusty sidekick Monty Hayward (Arthur Macrae) go to Switzerland on vacation - pursued by wily reporter Mary Langdon (Sally Gray). What was planned as a quite holiday becomes a web of intrigue when Templar spies criminal mastermind Rudolph Hauser, who subsequently relives The Saint of a mysterious music box containing a secret code. This sets off a dangerous cat-and-mouse between Templar and a gang of Nazi agents for possession of the box.

The Disney touch is all over this grand, colourful version of the Johann Wyss adventure of a European family setting off for the new world of New Guinea. The film opens on a ship jostled and torn by a raging storm while a family struggles to make it through alive. Tossed into a reef near a deserted tropical island, father John Mills takes charge and the family soon turns their island prison into a veritable paradise. Their multi-level tree house, built in record time, is complete with running water and a working pipe organ scavenged from the ship, while their grand yard is abloom in English roses. As a tale of hardship and pioneer pluck it's pure fantasy, but as entertainment it's energetic and appealing. The island is impossibly populated by ostriches, zebras, lions and elephants, a private zoo that delights the youngest boy and offers plenty of comic relief. The two older brothers discover even wilder life when they rescue the prisoner of oriental pirates (led by hard-bitten Sessue Hayakawa). There's little real danger anywhere in the film: even the climactic battle with the pirates is a cartoonish affair, with coconut bombs and non-lethal booby traps, until the final desperate, deadly moments. Hardly a faithful adaptation of the novel, but a lush, beautifully shot film and an entertaining adventure safe for all ages. Dorothy McGuire co-stars as the proper, worry-prone mother. --Sean Axmaker
