He helped not only introduce the electric guitar to the world but also popularized single string solos moving the instrument from background rhythm to the forefront of popular music. And like so many important jazz players he made enormous contributions in the span of an all-too-short life. Influenced by family jazz musicians in and out of Oklahoma and area western swing players Christian emerged with his own unique style of playing. In 1939 he joined the Benny Goodman Sextet and over the next few years he received national acclaim. At clubs like Minton's in New York he even helped craft the early stages of Bebop. This DVD covers all aspects of Charlie's life and music. Features interviews with family friends fellow Oklahoma jazz musicians and music luminaries like Claude 'Fiddler' Williams Jerry Jerome and Les Paul. Also included are a large array of musical performances by such guitarists as Herb Ellis Eldon Shamblin Zeke Campbell and others.

  • Public Enemies [Blu-ray]Public Enemies | Blu Ray | (05/12/2011) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

Since crime auteur Michael Mann, like his protagonists, plays by his own rules, Public Enemies eschews back story and motivation for a closely-observed, action-packed examination of men at work. FBI supremo J. Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup) kick-starts a nationwide manhunt when he proclaims John Dillinger (Johnny Depp, in top form) Public Enemy #1. Hoover taps Agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale) to bring the Tommy Gun-toting bank robber in by any means necessary (the agency also targets Pretty Boy Floyd and Baby Face Nelson). If Dillinger had split the scene then and there, he might have enjoyed a happier fate, but he falls for beautiful coat-check girl Billie Frechette (Marion Cotillard, whose open-hearted performance makes her the most sympathetic character in the film). In the end, though, Dillinger is the captain of his own destiny: his loyalty to his girl and his gang overpowers his desire to live free. Though the director also set his first film, Thief, and third series, Crime Story, in his native Chicago, Public Enemies plays more like Heat in Depression-era garb. In that L.A. policier, Al Pacino's cop develops a grudging respect for Robert De Niro's criminal, but letting a lawbreaker go free isn't an option. In this case, however, the tight-lipped Purvis never develops the same sort of esteem for Dillinger--or Hoover--making him the more tragic figure. If Public Enemies is less overtly commercial than The Untouchables or Bugsy, it's still the best mainstream gangster epic in ages and ranks among Mann's finest works. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

This box set features the following films: Not Another Teen Movie (Dir. Joel Gallen) (2001): In his directorial debut Joel Gallen spoofs the ever-popular teen genre - now in its extended form! The students of John Hughes High School live the plot lines of numerous teen flicks including: She's All That American Pie Ten Things I Hate About You and Sixteen Candles to name just a few. The most popular boy Jake Wyler (Chris Evans) has bet his friends that he can make Janey Briggs (Chyler Leigh) - the poor smart girl from the wrong side of the tracks - prom queen. Meanwhile her little brother is in pursuit of the most beautiful girl he's ever seen when he's not getting into trouble with his geeky friends. Of course a teen movie wouldn't be complete without a mean-spirited cheerleading captain a lovestruck best friend and a foreign exchange student all of whom have prominent roles in the film. Throw in a few guest appearances from familiar faces from some of the best-known teen movies of the 1980s along with remakes of songs from the same films - and even some word-for-word dialogue - and you have an amusing walk down memory lane for anyone who has a soft spot for the films of Hughes Crowe and the rest. American Movie (Dir. Paul Weitz) (1999): You'll never look at warm apple pie the same way again! American Pie takes a hysterical look at the goal of four unlucky in love high school friends who make the ultimate pact: lose their virginity by prom night. As they try to manipulate their way into the hearts of some of their classmates their plans often backfire with hilarity. One fails to score with the sexy foreign exchange student and then makes a last ditch effort with a band member who has an interesting way with her flute while another is so desperate he actually hires someone to give him a reputation.
