When babies babble or draw, adults jokingly say they know what the baby is trying to communicate. What if a clinic found that these babblings and doodles were actually very intelligent responses or scribbling of an ancient form of communication? Well, it seems that all it would create is this tepid comedy. Kathleen Turner runs the clinic that believes babies have "universal knowledge" before they learn to speak (and dumb down). What she plans to do with this knowledge is never really understood, but know this: the plans are evil. The secret lives of babies have been pretty adorably filmed previously with Look Who's Talking, but here the babies talk and move via visual effects like the animals in Babe. They also karate chop adults and talk about such adorable things as "diaper gravy". By the time the story (a variation of The Parent Trap) heats up (relatively speaking), there is not much left to engage us except some cute babies that just look odd as effects take over their mouths and movements. --Doug Thomas

  • My Favorite Martian [DVD] [1999]My Favorite Martian | DVD | (12/04/2004) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £15.99

Tired but watchable adaptation of the popular 60s TV show of a friendly Martian who lives with an agreeable earthling. Like Disney's other live-action remakes 101 Dalmatians and Flubber, the emphasis is on quick-moving scenes and special effects--not character. Jeff Daniels is the bemused earthling who gets to know Christopher Lloyd's alien ways. Much of the film feels like a retread borrowing heavily from other sci-fi comedies (and "fish out of water" films), including Lloyd's own Back to the Future. Lloyd and his talking space suit (voiced by Wayne Knight who brings the same personality as his Newman role on Seinfeld) don't know simple Earth customs but inexplicably know every pop culture reference in the last 10 years. Daryl Hannah and Elizabeth Hurley are along for the ride as Daniels' good-girl and bad-girl flames. TV's Martian, Ray Waltson, shows up as a secret agent alien hunter--and pours more emotion into his scenes than the rest of the movie combined. Ages 6 and up. --Doug Thomas

Sail away to follow your dreams Christopher Lloyd leads the cast in a family drama about two outcasts who dream of escaping to a better life. Abner is a widower living a reclusive life in a coastal town. Having alienated his family and withdrawn from the small, tight knit community, he spends his days building a sailboat in his yard. When neglected 9-year-old orphan Rick hides on Abner's property, the irascible old sea captain reluctantly agrees to protect the lonely boy from a gang of local bullies on one condition: that he help him finish his half-built boat. Both have found themselves on the periphery. Abner's daughter Katherine wants him to move to a residence for seniors, or a garbage dump for old trash, according to Abner; while Rick's uncle plans to send him to a children's home. The pair gradually forge an unlikely bond as the boat becomes their one chance to escape from the seaside village that harbours their misery. Written and directed by Arnold Grossman, The Boat Builder stars Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future; Taxi) as Abner, Jane Kaczmarek (Malcolm in the Middle) as Katherine and introducing Tekola Cornetet as Rick.
