Following the exciting, 2003 animated spectacle Bionicle: Mask of Light, Bionicle 2: Legends of Metru Nui extends Lego's movie franchise based on its Bionicle line of robotic warriors. Legends is actually a prequel to Mask of Light, which focused on the Toa, six guardians of the Matoran tribe on the island of Mata Nui, and the imminent arrival of a seventh member to their ranks. Legends tells the story of how the Toa came to be, chosen from the pool of Matoran youth in the great city of Metru Nui and, though physically transformed, hardly prepared for increased size and superheroic powers. In short order, the Toa--who babble and bicker like agitated adolescents--have to master their new gifts, impress their leader, and prepare to protect their home. Sprawling adventure, nonstop action, and real emotional complexity make this computer-generated universe a continually viable source for endless story possibilities. --Tom Keogh

  • George Of The Jungle 2 [2003]George Of The Jungle 2 | DVD | (18/08/2003) from £16.49   |  Saving you £1.50 (9.10%)   |  RRP £17.99

Although direct-to-video Disney sequels usually try to hide or simply ignore the issue, George of the Jungle 2 gleefully points out the lack of continuity between it and the original movie. Here, the good-natured narrator is happy to explain why Brendan Fraser has been replaced and why the special effects look cheaper: it's all a part of an effort to expand beyond the one-joke idea of a block-headed Tarzan who keeps swinging into trees. It's a pleasant surprise that all these self-referential nods and asides to the camera do indeed make hilarious viewing. Replacement Chris Showerman willingly takes on all manner of humiliation at the hands of CG jungle animals and his new extended family. George junior is the main by-product of the five-year gap, and thankfully has inherited brains from his mother's side (Julie Benz). In a dastardly plot to win back his love, Lyle (Thomas Haden Church, one of the few to reprise his role from the original) has the gang trooping back and forth to Las Vegas. With sight gags aplenty, bumbling George has more than just trees to avoid. --Paul Tonks

  • My Favorite Martian [1999]My Favorite Martian | DVD | (05/02/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £14.99

Tired but watchable adaptation of the popular 60s TV show of a friendly Martian who lives with an agreeable earthling. Like Disney's other live-action remakes 101 Dalmatians and Flubber, the emphasis is on quick-moving scenes and special effects--not character. Jeff Daniels is the bemused earthling who gets to know Christopher Lloyd's alien ways. Much of the film feels like a retread borrowing heavily from other sci-fi comedies (and "fish out of water" films), including Lloyd's own Back to the Future. Lloyd and his talking space suit (voiced by Wayne Knight who brings the same personality as his Newman role on Seinfeld) don't know simple Earth customs but inexplicably know every pop culture reference in the last 10 years. Daryl Hannah and Elizabeth Hurley are along for the ride as Daniels' good-girl and bad-girl flames. TV's Martian, Ray Waltson, shows up as a secret agent alien hunter--and pours more emotion into his scenes than the rest of the movie combined. Ages 6 and up. --Doug Thomas

  • The Return Of Spinal Tap [1992]The Return Of Spinal Tap | DVD | (21/05/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £15.99

The Return of Spinal Tap is based around Tap's performance at the Royal Albert Hall in 1992. In between the footage of Messrs St Hubbins, Tufnell and Smalls performing in front of a huge crowd enthusiastically determined to go along with the joke, there are clips purporting to investigate the band's humble origins in the East London suburb of Squatney, and updates from "rockumentary" director Marty Di Bergi and hapless record plugger Artie Fufkin (from the original film). It is the latter component which is the real strength of Return. Though the concert footage faithfully rehashes many of the film's most treasured jokes (the malfunctioning props, the dancing midgets), the real satirical strength of This is Spinal Tap was never its treatment of heavy metal music (which, after all, is hardly a difficult target). What the first movie did best was illuminate the egomania, paranoia, delusion and stupidity that are the cornerstones of rock 'n' roll as it is lived. The Return of Spinal Tap is a worthy companion piece. --Andrew Mueller
