  Based on an Ian McEwen novel, The Comfort of Strangers is directed by Paul Schrader at his most portentous. A young couple holidaying in Venice are taken up by an older more sophisticated pair. Christopher Walken as the Eurotrashy Roberto portrays with considerable vigour the sort of smooth stranger from whom anyone who has ever seen this sort of movie ought to run a mile, and Helen Mirren as his complaisant wife is hardly less sinister. Rupert Everett and Natasha Richardson are believably obtuse as the lovers who fail to understand exactly what they are being sucked into. This ought to be a far better film than it is: Harold Pinter's script is elliptically menacing and Angelo Badalamenti's score attractively gloomy. But in the end The Comfort of Strangers presents a rather low-rent vision of decadence: Roberto's praise of Margaret Thatcher and habit of photographing the unwary and beautiful are not quite enough to make the film's shocking climax entirely plausible. The DVD contains no additional features other than the obligatory theatrical trailer. --Roz Kaveney

  Boasting superlative make-up and special effects by gore guru Tom Savini Joseph Zitos The Rosemary's Killer was amongst the first of the 1980s cycle of slasher movies and remains one of the sub-genres pinnacle points. The story opens in the 1940s just after the end of WWII and a solider receiving a letter to inform him that his girlfriend has found a new flame. The girl and her new beau are at the local college graduation dance but decide to go outside for a walk and to fool around. They are brutally killed but their murderer is never found. Resultantly the town does not hold another graduation dance for over 40 years. The film skips forward in time to the preparations for the newly reinstated dance but somebody cant forget the past and wants to make sure nobody else does either. Soon a mysterious figure in an military uniform begins to dispatch the college students in various blood-splattered ways. Featuring cameos from acting legends Farley Granger and Lawrence Tierney Rosemary's Killer is elevated above the numerous other entries to the slasher cycle that followed by high production values a picturesque setting and perhaps most notably by Savinis aforementioned and highly original and spectacularly gruesome work.

Despite the dubious plotting Fulci was at the height of his powers when he made this highly atmospheric and stunningly shot horror film that makes up in classic set pieces and pierced eyeballs what it lacks in coherence!

Croft (Firth) a public school boy turned RFC officer arrives in France to take over as Second Lieutenant of a British detachment. He has deliberately manoeuvred his way into this particular position in order to be with Gresham (McDowell) an old boy from his school who has becoming something of a flying ace. But he isn't prepared for what he finds - Gresham is an alcoholic cynic whose brilliance in the air is at least partly due to drunken bravado. The other officers don't inspire a great deal of confidence either. Crawford (Ward) is a terrified coward who has faked illness in order to avoid combat and Sinclair (Plummer) is an avuncular veteran who tries to make the place as much like home as possible. Over the course of a few days Croft is introduced into various facts of life; sex drink horror and the hell of 20th Century warfare.
