In Atlanta several African-American children have been murdered. James Belushi and Gregory Hines play the two reporters who put their own lives on the line to expose the sinister truth behind the killings as they take on corrupt city officials who want to keep their findings under wraps. A heart-wrenching drama based on a true story.
Eddie Roback (Dane Clark), an American army deserter turned criminal, is going to trial in Paris after a ten-month delay when he is sprung on his way to court in a pitched gun battle. A manhunt ensues with the police just a few paces behind, including a nicely staged scene in a department store in which Roback manages to improvise an escape, only to be standing by across the street from his intended destination as his waiting confederates are taken by the police. Investigators try to get ahead of him by reaching out his girlfriend, Denise Vernon (Simone Signoret). Feigning innocence, she makes contact with the wounded Roback, who is turned away by his former associates in his attempts to find shelter and escape. She eventually finds him a hiding place in the studio of Max Salva, a lecherous photographer with a sadistic streak, who may have given Roback up to the police. Denise tries to find him a way out of the country, with money from an American writer, Frank Clinton (Robert Duke), while the police slowly catch on to Roback's whereabouts, drawing the net ever closer. Several battles of wits unfold at once, drawing the viewer in, across intertwining, overlapping plot elements. Even nature raises its hand against Roback as a crippling fog slows his seemingly easy escape to Belgium. All of the players are drawn together for a final confrontation that is every bit as violent as anything seen in American crime films of the period.
The cinematic equivalent of a half case of Red Bull chased with donuts, Kick-Ass is a giddy, violent experience--and not your average superhero movie. Based on the comic book by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr., it offers a set of heroes who are decidedly without superpowers: Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) decides he'll be just like a comic-book character, and puts on a ridiculous green suit to fight crime as the mysterious Kick-Ass. Luckily, somebody else had the same idea and comes along to rescue the incompetent crusader: Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) and his daughter Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz), who also happen to be running around town wearing masks and vanquishing evil. And here we have the movie's masterstroke: Hit Girl, a pint-sized preteen who slaughters bad guys and swears like a sailor on leave (and was the focus of a measure of controversy when the movie was released). The main target of our heroes is a gangster (Mark Strong, Sherlock Holmes), whose neglected son (Christopher Mintz-Plasse, McLovin from Superbad) figures he might just pull on a costume himself and become Red Mist! (One of the many funny things about Kick-Ass is that the superhero names are hopelessly lame.) Director Matthew Vaughn is operating at the same glib level as his Layer Cake, with cutesy song cues galore and a freewheeling appetite for cartoon violence. This means the movie's high wears off quickly, but it does get high--a crazy, hilarious kick. All that, plus Nicolas Cage executes a deadly Adam West imitation when he pulls on his cape and cowl. That's entertainment. --Robert Horton

Best-known for his stint with Charlie Parker's classic 1947 quintet superb bop pianist Duke Jordan (1922) worked with Sonny Stitt Gene Ammons and Stan Getz during the Fifties and made quite an impression by writing part of the soundtrack for the French movie Les Liaisons Dangereuses. After a period of obscurity this great pianist made a comeback in the Seventies recording and appearing with jazz legends such as Charlie Rouse Niels Pedersen or Dannie Richmond.Trumpeter-fluegelhornist Clark Terry (St Louis 1920) has always been renowned for his joyful swinging approach to music. A top-notch soloist with an unmistakable sound on his instrument a very personal vocalist and irrepressible humorist and an enthusiastic jazz educator Terry has been around since the Forties (when he was an inspiration for Miles Davis).Recorded in 1985 at Copenhagen's Montmartre Jazzhus as a tribute to the late great Ben Webster - a personal friend of trumpeter Terry - this excellent concert showcases pianist Jordan's first-class playing along with Clark Terry's humorous onstage presence. Resorting to a repertoire mostly consisting of Ellington standards Jordan Terry and their sidemen display a high spririted swinging set. A true delight for all jazz fans.Tracklisting: Dances A Ball / Lush Life / Solitude / Gone With the Wind / Jordu / In a Mellotone / Mood Indigo / Just Squeeze Me / God Bless The Child / Satin Doll / Lady Be Good
