Centred on the hilarious misadventures of a team of young doctors at St. Swithin's Hospital, the series showcased the talents of Barry Evans, Robin Nedwell, Geoffrey Davies and Richard O'Sullivan as their characters made painful progress from newly qualified juniors to fully fledged medical malcontents under the scrutiny of the fearsome Professor Loftus (Ernest Clark). Featuring scripts from a team of writers that included Bill Oddie and Graeme Garden (The Goodies), John Cleese and Graham Chapman (Monty Python's Flying Circus), Barry Cryer (The Two Ronnies, The Kenny Everett Television Show) and Douglas Adams (Hitch-hiker's Guide...), its original setting and robust humour made the Doctor series essential viewing. A sex symbol becomes a thing", says Marilyn Monroe, her voice being approximated by Trudi Jo Marie Keck, who also doubles as the editor of We Remember Marilyn, an historical appreciation of the life of the much-vaunted sex goddess. "I always thought symbols were things you clashed together", she continues to muse, "but if I'm going to be a symbol of anything, I'd rather it be sex than some other things there are symbols for. I know how they'll remember me: 'Here lies Marilyn Monroe, 34-24-36'. But, anyway, they'll remember me." And remember her they do, in this concoction written and directed by Ted Newsom (Ed Wood--Look Back in Angora). Newsom doesn't bother to cite the source for the above words ascribed to Ms. Monroe so it's hard to say where they came from, but they pointedly set the tone for any discussion of sex-symbol iconography. And how better to sum up a career that moved between celebrity and the highest seats of power on a vehicle of sex, and ended early and abruptly. Film clips, photos (where Marilyn the icon truly shone), and a rich array of stock footage form the backdrop for the proceedings. At one point, the voice of director John Huston enriches the soundtrack. --Jim Gay, Amazon.com

  • Final Fantasy Unlimited Volume 1Final Fantasy Unlimited Volume 1 | DVD | (15/03/2004) from £15.97   |  Saving you £7.01 (54.01%)   |  RRP £19.99

Twelve-year-old twins Ai and Yu Hayakawa take a mysterious subway to Wonderland to look for their missing scientist-parents. Wonderland is a hostile place, ruled by the petulant Earl Tyrant and his assorted hench-creatures. Ai and Yu are attacked by monsters and saved first by Lisa, a practitioner of the "Kigen Arts," then repeatedly by the taciturn, gun-totting Kaze. The first episodes are cluttered with characters who appear briefly then vanish. Although Ai, Yu, and Lisa do a lot of traveling, the series doesn't really go anywhere: the filmmakers seem more interested in showcasing the elaborate CG effects at their disposal than in coherent storytelling. The effects are very flashy, but they never meld satisfactorily with the drawn animation. Based on the popular videogame franchise, Unlimited borrows from Matsumoto's Galaxy Express and Miyazawa's Galactic Railroad, but offers none of their mystery and magic. (Rated 12 and older: violence, tobacco use)
