| RRP Back in the 1980s, there were few phenomena bigger than the Transformers. A hugely popular toy line, it also spawned a long-running comic book, a hit feature film and successful animated television series. Transformers--Original Series, Volume One collects five episodes of the hit television series: the epic, three-part "The Ultimate Doom", plus two episodes that have never before been available in the UK ("Fire on the Mountain" and "War of the Dinobots"). Epic in scope, the story of the Transformers was a timeless, if unsophisticated, tale of good versus evil: the heroic Autobots battled to prevent the evil Decepticons from realising their goal of universal conquest. The resulting civil war raged for millions of years, draining the energy resources from their home planet Cybertron and leading the two robotic races to earth. Here, they continue their war, using their unique ability to alter their bodies to take on the form of earthly vehicles, weapons and creatures. In the morass of bad 80s' cartoons, the Transformers shone like a beacon on Saturday mornings--excellent animation (for many in the US and UK, it was their first introduction to Japanese manga, albeit basic) and characters with real personalities and depth (for most children of the 80s, Autobot leader Optimus Prime was a very real hero). For the ever-growing legions of Transformers fans out there, as well as any 80s' nostalgia buffs, Transformers--Original Series, Volume One is required viewing.--Robert Burrow

| RRP This legendary animated feature is surely beyond criticism by now and, furthermore, it's unlikely that we'll see such forceful narrative in a kids' cartoon ever again. Disney's treatment of Collodi's story of the little wooden puppet who wants nothing more than to be a real boy is always guaranteed to have audiences entranced. While some of the movie's success is derived from its liberal use of the kind of imagery no children's film-maker would even attempt to get past the storyboard stage today--a mysterious island where children smoke cigars, get drunk and turn into donkeys, a monstrous, malicious sea-creature which is devoid of any trace of cuddliness and a pair of villains who routinely abduct children, to give just a few examples--the characters are depicted with the finest attention to detail, most of the songs have become classics in their own right ("When You Wish Upon a Star" being only one of many) and the graceful, stylised animation positively glows with fine detail. Essential family viewing. --Roger Thomas

Raging Bull : Ultimate Edition (1980) | DVD | (12/09/2005)
from £N/A

| RRP Raging Bull is arguably the finest work produced from the Scorsese and De Niro partnership. De Niro gives an amazing portrayal of real-life boxer Jake LaMotta whose animal side lurks just beneath the surface ever ready to erupt. Vivid and unremitting in its uncompromising brutality and honesty the fight sequences are famed for their realism. Jake LaMotta is a boxer whose psychological and sexual complexities erupt into violence both in and out of the ring. Joe Pesci and Cathy Moriarty are unforgettable as the brother who falls prey to Jake's mounting paranoia and the fifteen-year-old girl who becomes his most prized trophy. Violent throughout this film is a testament to Scorsese's and De Niro's skills creating a thoroughly absorbing film about such an unlikable character. Renowned for throwing himself into the roles of his character De Niro went on a diet to gain fifty pounds during production for the role of the faded star. Raging Bull garnered eight Oscar'' nominations and won two including Best Actor for De Niro - the second of two Golden statues for the Italian-American method actor.
Out Of The Blue | DVD | (04/03/2002)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP Part of the gritty, punk-inspired wave of US independent cinema of the early 1980s, Out of the Blue is a bleak, harrowing drama. Essentially the vision of actor and director Dennis Hopper, the film finds the man behind the sepia-tinged soul searching of Easy Rider at a far lower ebb, in terms of the tone of the film and his own character, Donny. The undoubted star of the movie, however, is Linda Manz, who plays the troubled 15-year-old CB, a troubled teenage girl on the brink of adulthood. Waiting for Donny to return from a jail sentence for manslaughter, CB is living with her drug-addicted mother and seeking solace in the Sex Pistols and Elvis Presley. The events that unfold on Donny's return are often unbearably grim (the final scenes are practically unwatchable) but produce a movie that is worthy of its hallowed status. Hopper in particular is an uncomfortable sight, made all the more unsettling by the knowledge that it is hard to tell where his character ends and he begins. It's hard work, but more than worth the effort. On the DVD: for its first release on DVD much effort has been made to give Out of the Blue the treatment it deserves. The enhanced visuals are excellent, focusing on Hopper's inspired direction. The audio soundtrack is available in Dolby Digital sound, particularly effective on the recurring use of Neil Young's fragile "Hey, Hey, My, My (Out of the Blue)", the song which gave the movie its title. Hopper's audio commentary is fascinating and reflects his dedication to the project, a film that he practically rewrote on set after stepping in to replace the original director. The movie's place in both Hopper's career and alongside works such as Repo Man and Driller Killer is also examined in an excellent 12-page booklet. --Phil Udell
