Jesús Franco, Spain's crazed cult auteur, had made a couple of features before The Awful Dr Orloff, but this infamous thriller (reportedly Spain's first horror film) gave birth to Franco's brand of erotic horror and surreal madness. The story of a mad surgeon who kidnaps and disfigures beautiful showgirls in an attempt to restore the face of his scarred daughter is clearly influenced by George Franju's Eyes Without a Face. The style, however, is a mix of foggy Universal monster movies and sexed-up Hammer horror, which Franco pushes to the limits of Spain's 1960s censorship restrictions (and beyond). A gaunt and hollowed Howard Vernon plays the sadistic surgeon Orloff (a role he revived in a number of sequels), and Ricardo Valle dons a phoney but freaky mask to play his grunting, blind, bug-eyed henchman, Morpho, who has a savage habit of taking a big bite of the victims. It's a smooth, elegantly orchestrated thriller with handsome sets and vivid locations, and the fogbound cobblestone streets, dark alleys and eerily empty mansions create a genuinely spooky ambience. He also tosses in a wild, creepy, thoroughly modern experimental score. Franco went on to direct more than 150 films under a dozen pseudonyms, most of which make the brief flashes of flesh and perversity here look tame, but this trendsetting landmark is still considered one of his greatest.--Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com
Raw, violent and shocking, Scum is a compelling story set in a contemporary Borstal.
Set in the mid-1980s against a backdrop of the rising club scene Glitter is the tale of Billie Frank, a modest young singer with a phenomenal talent just hoping to make it big in New York City. Billie (Mariah Carey) hooks up with super-cool club DJ and producer Dice (Max Beesley) and, as you might guess, hits the big time. But as both her lover and producer, Dice is a bit put out by the label's recommendation that Billie finds a more talented producer, while at the same time her girlfriends are telling her to "kick him to the kerb". So that's the basic gist. Throw in an estranged alcoholic mother and the rags-to-riches story is complete, or sadly not as the case might be. Presumably because the story is an old chestnut that everyone involved knows has been roasted a few too many times already the filmmakers thought it wasn't worth bothering with trying to make the plot even vaguely interesting, and it drags for what seems like days. The two leads are likeable characters, though their performances don't make up for the plodding storyline. Mariah is just Mariah--smiling, singing and equally accomplished at both--whereas Beesley is let down by his shocking American accent. If you like the sound of early US Garage and post-disco dance music then Mariah's soundtrack is a winner (although it got slated) but Glitter isn't even one of those films that's so bad it's good. It's just dull. On the DVD: Glitter comes complete with a redundant director's commentary that attempts to explain events requiring no explanation, a cheesy trailer which is very sparkly, plus bog-standard discographies and filmographies of the cast and director.--David Trueman

Raw, violent and shocking, Scum is a compelling story set in a contemporary Borstal. It tells of life in an institution run by violence and brutality rather than reason, where the boy who can fight his way to the top of the heap and reign as 'Daddy' will gain the respect of the inmates and sadistic 'screws' alike. One of the most controversial films ever made in the UK, and one which caused a furore when it was first screened on TV, 'Scum' stars Ray Winstone as Carlin, the one man prepared t...

In the role of Eurydice Natalie Dessay begins at once with a display of vocal and verbal pyrotechnics which are then taken up by Yann Beuron as Orpheus. Together they give us an ideal of the developments to follow. Dancers and singers melt into a unit. The stage setting and an unconventional choreography sparkle with inventiveness. When Pluto for example arrives on skis from the underworld onto Mt. Olympus and Offenbach quotes the famous can-can right in the middle of Pluto's aria it seems to be a parody of his own work. The production offers a wealth of material for modern interpretations and immorality. Thus we see a bored Eurydice lying on the sofa in her apartment as she zaps her way through the TV channels constantly looking for diversion showing us how timeless an opera buff can really be. Sometimes she sings upside down hopping around - a vocal masterpiece. Laurent Naouri also captivates in the role of Jupiter and costumed as a fly demonstrates his vocal and acting talent with Jacques Offenbach's Buzz aria. To sum up; the present production is a fountain-of-youth cure for Offenbach's operetta classic. A cascade of ideas and ironic allusions turns this ingenious work into a feast for eyes and ears.
