Helene Hanff (Anne Bancroft) and Frank Doel (Anthony Hopkins) are lifelong friends who never meet in 84 Charing Cross Road, a unique comedy-drama based on a true story. Hanff and Doel are separated by 3,000 miles of ocean and joined by a passion for old books. Their relationship begins when New- Yorker Hanff orders a copy of Pepys' diary. Doel, as polite and soft-spoken as Hanff is loud and overbearing, fields the request from the titular book shop in London. For the next two decades they correspond without ever actually sitting down for tea and crumpets. Director David Jones (Betrayal) does a reasonably good job of goosing a movie about something as un-cinematic as letter-writing, and the stars have fun chewing scenery on both sides of the Atlantic. The model for this kind of bittersweet relationship is David Lean's Brief Encounter, which, not coincidentally, is glimpsed here when Hanff steps out for a rainy-day matinee. --Glenn Lovell, Amazon.com

  • Patch Adams [1999]Patch Adams | DVD | (17/04/2019) from £4.99   |  Saving you £5.00 (100.20%)   |  RRP £9.99

Patch Adams raises two schools of thought: there are those who are inspired by the true story of a troubled man who finds happiness in helping others--a man set on changing the world and who may well accomplish the task. And then there are those who feel manipulated by this feel-good story, who want to smack the young medical student every time he begins his silly antics. Staving off suicidal thoughts, Hunter Adams commits himself into a psychiatric ward, where he not only garners the nickname "Patch" but learns the joy in helping others. To this end, he decides to go to medical school, where he clashes with the staid conventions of the establishment as he attempts to inject humour and humanity into his treatment of the patients ("We need to start treating the patient as well as the disease", he declares throughout the film). Robin Williams, in the title role, is as charming as ever, although someone should tell him to broaden his range--the ever-cheerful, do-gooder à la Good Will Hunting and Dead Poets Society is getting a little old. His sidekick Truman (Daniel London) steals the show with his gawky allure and eyebrows that threaten to overtake his lean face--he seems more real, which is odd considering that Patch Adams does exist and this film is based on his life. Monica Potter is the coolly reluctant love interest and she makes the most of her one-dimensional part. While moments of true heartfelt emotion do come through, the major flaw of this film is that the good guys are just so gosh-darn good and the bad ones are just big meanies with no character development. Patch Adams, though, does provide the tears, the giggles and the kooky folks who will keep you smiling at the end. --Jenny Brown

  • Rush [Blu-ray]Rush | Blu Ray | (27/01/2014) from £20.98   |  Saving you £6.00 (31.60%)   |  RRP £24.99

Ron Howard’s Rush--set in Formula One’s 1970s heyday, when ‘sex was safe and driving was dangerous’--is a gripping story of fire and ice rivalry that makes today’s rights-managed Formula One look as dull as rain. Culminating in the summer of 1976 and filtered through a layer of colour-faded nostalgia, Rush follows the intertwining careers of James Hunt--the English rock ‘n’ roll star of motor racing--and his chief rival Niki Lauda, a prickly newcomer with a head for engineering and a Spartan work ethic. Chris Helmsworth plays Hunt, as sporting a playboy as the late George Best, striding handsomely around Monaco’s sunlit racetrack with an open shirt and a hairfull of shining wind. Bankrolled by aristocratic friends and at ease among the sport’s Riviera set, his career and his popularity are overshadowed when Lauda (made enormously likable by Daniel Brühl) catches the eye of an ambitious Ferrari team on the lookout for a new breed of racing driver. As Hunt drifts though a string of beds, boozers and petty brawls, Lauda patiently racks up the points, spending long nights obsessing over his car and those precious milliseconds that can mean an eternity at the margin. A deadly rivalry will do wonders for your career--and Hunt vs. Lauda erupts into snaking dogfights around the hazardous circuits of Monza, Silverstone, and near-fatally at the Nürburgring. Hunt is more alive to the alluring danger of racing--references to the famously large number of women he’s meant to have slept with are left out--but it’s Lauda who pays the higher price, and the film’s dramatic heart is Lauda’s psychological comeback, despite devastating injuries, as he prepares for a final showdown. --Leo Batchelor

One of the most critically acclaimed shows in TV history Homicide: Life On The Street re-invigorated a tired genre by focusing on the grueling work of solving murders instead of an endless succession of bloody crimes and car chases. Inspired by David Simon's Edgar Award-winning account of Baltimore homicide detectives and brought to television by director Barry Levinson (Rain Man Oz) and writer Paul Attanasio (Gideon's Crossing) Homicide boasted a powerhouse cast featuring Ned Beatty (Deliverance) Yaphet Kotto (Alien) Richard Belzer (Law & Order: SVU) and breakout star Andre Braugher (Frequency). The critical response was overwhelming: Homicide won multiple Emmy and Writer's Guild of America Awards and is one of just two shows in history to claim three Peabody Awards. Now Homicide debuts on DVD with this collector's set featuring all 13 episodes from the first two seasons. Episodes Comprise: 1. Gone For Goode 2. A Ghost Of a Chance 3. Son Of A Gun 4. A Shot In The Dark 5. Three Men And Adena 6. Dog And Pony Show 7. And The Rockets' Dead Glare 8. Smoke Gets In Your Eyes 9. The NIght Of The Living Dead

  • 24: Series 124: Series 1 | DVD | (14/10/2002) from £11.98   |  Saving you £38.01 (317.28%)   |  RRP £49.99

Such a simple idea--yet so fiendishly complex in the execution. 24, as surely everyone knows by now, is a thriller that takes place over 24 hours, midnight to midnight, in 24 one-hour episodes (well, 45-minute episodes if you extract the ad breaks). Everything to take place in real time--on-screen and off-screen time the same--which means no flash-backs, no flash-forwards, no nice handy time-dissolves. Every strand of the plot has to be dovetailed and interlocked to make sure that things happen just when they should, in the right amount of time. Not that easy. Creator Robert Cochran and his team of writers and directors have done a pretty impressive job in putting the jigsaw together and keeping the tension ratcheted up high, as Federal Agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) hares around LA trying to stall an assassination attempt on a black Presidential candidate and rescue his wife and daughter from the clutches of the Balkan baddies. Twists, turns, revelations and cliffhangers are tossed at us with satisfying regularity. It’s not perfect: we get some hokey plot devices (instant amnesia, anybody?) and the final twist, once you start thinking back, makes no sense whatsoever. There are altogether too many huggy family moments ("I love you, Dad." "I love you, son"); and as for überbaddie Dennis Hopper’s "Serbian" accent… Even so, this is undeniably mould-breaking TV. Sutherland, rescuing his career from the doldrums in one heroic leap, fully deserves his Golden Globe. Sets and locations are artfully deployed--we gain a real sense of LA’s splayed-out geography--and Sean Callery’s score is a powerful, brooding presence. Like Murder One and The Sopranos, 24 is one of those series future TV thrillers will have to measure themselves against. On the DVDs: 24 is released in a six-disc box set. On discs 1- 5 there are no extras, but disc 6 includes the "alternative" ending and a preview of Series 2, presented by an urbane Kiefer Sutherland, that tells us precisely nothing. The transfer, in 16x9 widescreen and 2.0 Dolby Digital sound, does the high production values of the original every justice.--Philip Kemp
