  This Claude Chabrol film is a dark tale of secrets erotica and crime. Successful advertising executive Charles Masson is involved in a hot affair with his best friend's wife Laura. When one of their S&M romps goes bad Charles strangles Laura to death in an apartment that was borrowed. While racing from the scene of the crime he bumps into his friend Francois and drives back to their neighborhood. When someone realises that he'd seen Charles and Laura together in the past he decides not to go to the police with the information. With no clues to the crime police have a hard time finding a suspect. Charles however has an even harder time coping with guilt his children and his loyal wife Helene.

  Tom Kalin directed this black-and-white study of the infamous Leopold and Loeb case a case told before in two previous films -- Rope (Alfred Hitchcock 1948) and Compulsion (1959 starring Orson Welles). In 1924 in Chicago Nathan Leopold Jr. and Richard Loeb two 18-year-olds kidnapped and murdered the 13-year-old Bobby Franks immediately killing him and then stuffing his naked body up a culvert. The motive for the crime was simply that they wanted to prove to themselves that they were smart enough to get away with it. The previous film versions downplayed Leopold and Loeb's homosexuality but Kalin's version explores their possible psychosexual motivations. Loeb (Daniel Schlachet) is calculating intellectual while Leopold (Craig Chester) the amateur ornithologist is emotional and weak. In love with Loeb Leopold is willing to do anything for him and when Leob uses the withholding of sex as a prompt Leopold is even willing to commit murder to have his sexual desires satisfied by Loeb. Swoon is a chilling yet fascinating film.

  Beyblade is an animé tie-in to the high-tech spinning top toys. It has some of the standard faults of the cheaper Japanese animations--such as static backgrounds and overly perky facial design--but it makes inventive use of the idea that the competitions of the Beybladers are the outward manifestation of more occult conflicts in another realm. Young Tyson is a keen and inventive Beyblader--in the first episode, he works out a way of quadrupling the speed and force of his top--but it helps that his Beyblade is inhabited by the spirit of an ancestral dragon. Thus equipped, he moves through one round after another of an international competition, sometimes in alliance with the haughty Kai and his gang and sometimes opposing them, and always helped by Kenny and Dizzi, the spirit beast that inhabits Kenny's laptop. How much of this you want to watch will ultimately depend on how many duels between spinning tops you are going to be interested in, but the byplay between physical and spirit realms, and the conflict of characters is moderately interesting as well. --Roz Kaveney

That's not a complaint--it's what makes The American Friend one of the most stylish (and at the time most expensive) films to emerge from the new German cinema of the 1970s. Loosely adapting Patricia Highsmith's mystery novel Ripley's Game, director Wim Wenders shifted priority from plotting to character, emphasising a richly colourful and atmospheric approach to locations in Hamburg, where a picture-framer (Bruno Ganz) is lured into an assassination scheme involving a mysterious Frenchman (Gerard Blain) and the titular American friend, Tom Ripley (played by Dennis Hopper, a far cry from either Matt Damon's portrayal of the same character in The Talented Mr Ripley or John Malkovich's in the 2003 version of Ripley's Game). The plotting is vague to the point of irrelevance; Wenders prefers to maintain the aura of mystery rather than generating any conventional suspense and expresses his affection for American movies by casting favourite directors Nicholas Ray and Samuel Fuller in pivotal supporting roles. The result is an intoxicating example of cinematic cross-pollination. --Jeff Shannon
