Happy Go Lovely (Dir. H. Bruce Humberstone 1951): David Niven plays a rich bachelor the head of a successful greeting-card company in Scotland essentially a kind man but respectable to the point of stodginess and extreme stuffiness. An American troupe wants to produce a musical in town but has trouble getting backers. Niven's character meets several of the leading ladies of the show; through a misunderstanding he doesn't correct they come to think that he's a newspaper reporter. He falls in love with one of the women who reciprocates; he grows more lively and friendly to the surprise of his employees... Pajama Game (Dir. Stanley Donen and George Abbott 1957): A truly joyous tale starring Doris Day as the union leader in a clothing factory. From the novel 'Seven And A Half Cents' by Richard Bissell and adapted into a successful musical which the french director Jean Luc Goddard called the first left wing operetta! The Inspector General (Dir. Henry Koster 1949): In this delightful period farce set in Russia in the 1800's Danny Kaye plays an illiterate buffoon who is mistaken by the villagers for their feared Inspector General.Hilarious situations ensue as Danny is caught up in court intrigue without having a clue of what is going on. Made For Each Other (Dir. John Cromwell 1939): This highly appealing comedy drama stars James Stewart and Carole Lombard as a young couple battling illness lack of money inept servants and interfering in-laws... The Little Shop Of Horrors (Dir. Roger Corman 1960): The original movie of this classic black comedy/horror about a rather dim-witted young man Seymour (Jonathan Haze) working for a week in Mushnick's flower shop on skid row who develops an intelligent bloodthirsty plant. He names the plant Audrey Jr and as it grows it demands human meat for sustenance and Seymour is forced to kill in order to feed it. Jack Nicholson has a notable cameo part as an undertaker Wilbur Force who is a masochistic dental patient and the film also features the writer Charles Griffith as the hold-up man and the voice of Audrey Jr. Sources differ but it was reputed that the film was shot in just two or three days and in 1961 it was billed as The Funniest Picture This Year. The film inspired the well-known off-Broadway hit musical and musical/comedy movie remake starring Rick Moranis and Ellen Greene was made in 1986.

For many years Iron Maiden have represented the very peak of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal movement that swept the musical world in the mid 1970s. Their spectacular stage shows and thundering nightmarish metal anthems scored the band one of the most devoted followings in rock combining infamy and genuine musical thrills to devastating effect. The dual speed-metal soloing and shotgun riffs of Dave Murray Adrian Smith and later Janick Gers has long been a trademark of the Maiden sound and this DVD provides a note-for-note guide to five of their most characteristic and recognisable classics. Danny Gill shares the secrets and techniques so you can capture the sounds of these masters of metal for yourself. Royal Tenenbaums: Royal Tenenbaum and his wife Etheline had three children--Chas Richie and Margot and then they separated. Chas started buying real estate in his early teens and seemed to have an almost preternatural understanding of international finance. Margot was a playwright and received a Braverman Grant of fifty thousand dollars in the ninth grade. Richie was a junior champion tennis player and won the U.S. Nationals three years in a row. Virtually all memory of the brilliance of the young Tenenbaums was subsequently erased by two decades of betrayal failure and disaster. Most of this was generally considered to be their father's fault. The Royal Tenenbaums is the story of a family of geniuses and their sudden unexpected reunion one winter. Rushmore: The story of a gifted rebellious teenager named Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman) a 10th grader at elite Rushmore Academy. Editor of the School Newspaper Captain or President of innumerable clubs and societies Max is also one of the worst students in school and the threat of expulsion hangs permanently over his head. • China Moon [1994]China Moon | DVD | (30/07/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

China Moon (1991) is a pleasing entertainment that assembles the dependable elements of film noir in the tradition of Body Heat (1981), The Last Seduction (1994) and, of course, the mother of all such films, Double Indemnity (1944). There's a femme fatale (the beautiful and talented Madeleine Stowe) and an honest cop (reliable Ed Harris) who soon becomes smitten. Her husband (Charles Dance) is a brute who beats her, so she murders him and inveigles Harris into helping her dispose of the body. That's when the complications begin, and Harris starts to sweat when his fellow cop keeps asking awkward questions. The acting is uniformly good, with Harris' partner played by Benicio Del Toro (Traffic) offering an excellent performance. Harris and Stowe strike sparks off each other, to the point where you almost believe he is being sucked into her schemes. On the DVD: The disc contains a theatrical trailer and several TV ads, with scroll-down filmographies of the major talents involved which are incomplete for some unknown reason. There's a brief and unenlightening five-minute documentary, with the principal cast plus the director, John Bailey, commenting on the film. Both image and sound are excellent quality, sound in Dolby Digital, picture in anamorphic widescreen ratio of 2.35:1 --Ed Buscombe
