If everybody were as special as the gang that dwells beyond the Big Blue buzzer in Bear in the Big Blue House: Everybody's Special, life lessons like acceptance, acknowledging others' needs and making sense of opposites would wiggle their way into our psyches so snugly packed in high spirits they'd be barely detectable. Everybody's Special proves it, with "As Different as Day and Night" demonstrating that brilliance lies at both ends of a spectrum; "Bats Are People Too" clearing the cobwebs off Benny, a bat who's not all bad; and "The Yard Sale" shuffling everybody outdoors, where they work together to tag it and bag it for a worthy cause. As usual, the head-of-household gentle giant comes through with sniff-along invitations and heel-kickin' musical numbers. (Ages 2 to 5.) --Tammy La Gorce, Amazon.com

Screwedwas another nail in the coffin of former Saturday Night Livewisecracker Norm MacDonald, following his dismal previous film, Dirty Work. However, while Screwedisn't particularly funny (the jokes about dentures, dog poop and dead bodies are pretty much as old as the hills), the plot exerts a perverse interest; for most of the film, it's genuinely unpredictable. MacDonald plays Willard, the butler-chauffer, all-purpose flunky of Mrs. Crock, the wealthy, penny-pinching owner of a pastry company. Fed up with her abuse, Willard and his friend Rusty (David Chappelle from Blue Streak and 200 Cigarettes) conspire to kidnap her dog Muffin. But Muffin escapes and returns home; the ransom note is assumed to be for Willard himself. Rusty and Willard run with the idea, sending in a videotape of himself being held prisoner. When a detective starts getting a little too close, they panic and decide to fake Willard's death. Okay, none of it makes much sense, but in a world of ridiculously formulaic films which slavishly follow every screenwriting cliché Screwed seems like a brief oasis of narrative invention. Of course, it still isn't funny. And by the end, it's lost whatever spark of imagination that got it started. Too bad. It's written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, the screenwriters responsible for Problem Child, but also for Ed Wood and The People vs Larry Flynt--they should stick to biographies. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

Hell To Pay is a modern reworking of Cane and Abel set in London's infamous underworld. Dave (Dave Courtney) and Larry (Billy Murray) are brothers who jointly run a prominent London firm. The film opens with Larry trying to cover his tracks after he has knocked a rival gang boss for ''100 000 of drug money. This is the catalyst for a dramatic chain of events that will lead to double-cross murder and ultimately full scale war between the brothers. Larry a devious schemer sees the drug trade as a lucrative way forward for the firm despite his brother's protests and when Dave who is forced to kill Murphy to protect Larry is arrested for murder Larry takes the opportunity to set himself up as drug baron. With an improvisational narrative structure and a raw-edged stylistic approach Hell To Pay has the uncomfortable feel of a fly on the wall documentary as it chronicles the sometimes chilling sometimes routine events that typify the distinctly British gangster lifestyle. Punctuated by naturalistic performances and an earthy ironic humour. The movie has a pungent air of authenticity bolstered by the fact that many of the principles are living the real life experience of the world their characters inhabit. Genuine gangster icons Dave Courtney Joey Pyle 'Pretty Boy' Roy Shaw and Tony Lambrianou all long-time associates of the Krays ensure that the situations and dialogues ring true by drawing on their personal knowledge.

  • Tucker & Dale Vs Evil [Blu-ray] [2011] [Region Free]Tucker & Dale Vs Evil | Blu Ray | (07/03/2016) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

A confident mix of comedy and horror, Tucker & Dale Vs Evil brings together Firefly star Alan Tudyk and Reaper’s Tyler Labine as a pair of hillbillies. More to the point, they’re a pair of hillbillies who have bought themselves a secluded cabin in the middle of the woods. Anyone who’s seen even a handful of horror movies will have be more than familiar with the conventions that are being set up, and might just be settling back for a dose of the familiar. But they don’t really get it. Instead, Tucker & Dale Vs Evil chooses to play up the comedy, thanks to writer-director Eli Craig’s very good script. It’s a screenplay that accepts and warms to the trappings of a horror movie, and then has a great deal of fun playing with them. Thus, when a bunch of students turn up in the middle of the woods, things don’t quite go the way that many will be expecting. It’s odd that Tucker & Dale Vs Evil never really secured itself the broader theatrical exposure it deserves, because it’s a really smart film. Granted, it’s bereft of outright movie stars, but the pairing of Tudyk and Labine proves inspired, and Craig is wise enough to keep his running time nice and tight. Don’t let the relatively low budget of the production lead you to think you’re not getting good value from a Blu-ray upgrade, mind. In terms of picture quality in particular, you get a really sharp transfer here, and the audio mix is no slouch either. Given that most people never got to enjoy the film in cinemas, it seems right to make the most of it in the home. Tucker & Dale Vs Evil is far from the most ambitious film of recent times. But it’s certainly one of the funniest. It throws in the necessary gore quotient expected by fans of the horror genre, but delivers far more solid laughs that its relative anonymity might lead you to expect. It’s pretty much the epitome, then, of an undercover gem. --Jon Foster
