The Frost / Nixon interviews are now recognised as one of the great media events of the Twentieth Century. First broadcast in May 1977, they drew the biggest ever worldwide audience for a news interview. Forty-five million people watched in America alone. During twenty eight and three quarter gruelling hours, Frost questioned Nixon on everything from Vietnam to China, from abuse of power to the Final Days. But the most tense and gripping sessions were on Watergate. Two whole days were devoted to the subject. Never before – and never afterwards – would Nixon confront the issue of Watergate, particularly in a forum where he had no knowledge of the questions and no right even to see the edited programme before it was broadcast. A picture emerges of a White House under siege, of burglars and hush money, of a Nixon close to tears, having to sacrifice his closest aides – culminating in the unprecedented sight of a President apologising to his people. The DVD includes a brand new interview, exclusively for Amazon, where, after nearly 30 years Sir David Frost takes a look back at the circumstances surrounding the Frost Nixon programme and answers questions on how he came to secure the film that all big TV companies wanted and what Nixon said to him in the weeks following the broadcast to the American people. Available for the first time in nearly 30 years - Frost / Nixon: The Watergate Interview is exclusively available from Amazon.

  • Dame Elizabeth Taylor - A Musical Celebration [2000]Dame Elizabeth Taylor - A Musical Celebration | DVD | (21/06/2004) from £17.25   |  Saving you £-4.26 (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

Like all the best celebrity tributes, Dame Elizabeth Taylor: A Musical Celebration (2001) combines the essence of its subject--in this case, charity work for HIV and AIDS research and a legendary career in movies, both meriting every ounce of recognition--with the fascination of a spectacular car smash. The highlights are the screenings of trailers for some of her best films, including Giant and Butterfield 8 (she won an Oscar but derided the picture) and an archive interview in which she memorably describes a tiresome gossip columnist as "a frustrated old biddy". The live entertainment is far shakier than the event's inspiration, though. Presented by David Frost and Stephen Fry--an uneasy, fawning partnership-- there is some real quality: Andrea Bocelli (sending the guest of honour into transports of delight), John Barry conducting a couple of his most symphonic Bond themes and Reba McEntire, the powerhouse country and western diva-turned-Broadway actress. On the down side, Marti Pellow's self-congratulatory posing would make Robbie Williams seem a model of modesty, Jay Kay's attempts to jazz up a standard are woeful and Ute Lemper is at her most pretentious for a cacophonic "Mack the Knife". Michael Jackson's mute presence at Taylor's side emphasises the hypnotic strangeness of the whole affair, though the Dame herself takes the entire marvellously lurid spectacle in her stride. On the DVD: Dame Elizabeth Taylor: A Musical Celebration comes to DVD with no extra features. A Taylor filmography would have been useful. Otherwise, the 4:3 video aspect ratio reproduces the television gala feel and for sound quality, you can choose between LPCM stereo, Dolby Digital 5.2 and DTS surround sound (best for that authentic, muddy Royal Albert Hall acoustic).--Piers Ford

  • The Ring [2003]The Ring | DVD | (03/07/2006) from £4.99   |  Saving you £15.00 (300.60%)   |  RRP £19.99

An unexpected marriage of big-budget production values and low-budget instincts, The Ring offers chills to be savoured. Usually when Hollywood indulges its cash-hungry game of remaking foreign films the result sacrifices much of what made the original so special. Clearly, the supremely eerie supernatural vibe that permeated the legendary 1998 Japanese horror film must have done something to those Hollywood suits, because Gore Verbinski's remake is actually rather good. Certainly, it's not superior to the original, but it's undoubtedly a cut above most modern horror efforts, expertly wringing every drop of suspense. The impressive Naomi Watts (Mullholland Drive) plays a journalist investigating an urban myth of a videotape that kills the viewer a week after watching it. Succumbing to curiosity, she watches it herself--big mistake--and has a week to solve the mystery or fall victim to its sinister power. While transferring the action from Japan to modern-day Seattle may weaken the impact of the plot's mythological elements, and the film may be guilty of pointless padding (belying the original's lean format), Verbinski's effort is no less squirm-inducing, bolstered with a tremendous shocker of an ending. Exquisitely utilising the strong visual sense displayed in The Mexican, Verbinski creates a thick atmosphere of dread and suspense that never lets up, thankfully favouring old-fashioned scares, rather than retreating to blunt CG spectacle. In Watts, the film has a horror heroine who far exceeds the average wide-eyed scream queen, perfectly conveying the endless stream of bone-chilling moments. --Danny Graydon

Leslie Nielsen tones down the bumbling for Santa Who? but wearing a belly like a bowl full of jelly does little to diminish his trademark dimwittedness, which is what gets the bells ringing on this St. Nick flick. Peter Albright, self-involved TV reporter, can't believe his luck when Santa, presumably the for-hire variety, sails into his windshield and gets amnesia--what a story! When his search for Santa's family stops short at the North Pole, his humbug infestation subsides, setting him free to make merry.
