  Brian Yuzna's Bride of Re-Animator (1990) was one of the last hurrahs for special-effects-based horror films before CGI extended the ease with which the impossible could be put on screen. Like its predecessor, Re-Animator, Bride is very loosely based on HP Lovecraft's stories of Herbert West, a scientist with a taste for investigation that knows no boundaries, especially not those of good taste. He and his agonisingly liberal sidekick Cain have discovered an improvement on their original serum--now they can not only bring the dead back to life but also assemble them from parts first. Jeffrey Combs gives a wonderfully dour performance as West, not even cracking a smile when a creature he has concocted from fingers and an eye-ball is running around the room unseen by a pestering detective. This is the sort of film that constantly escalates its macabre elements--the surviving villain of the first film has been left as simply an animated head, but that does not stop him pursuing his revenge on West, nor finding ways of using West's new techniques along the way. It all makes for cheerfully gruesome fun. On the DVD: Bride of Re-Animator is presented in an anamorphic widescreen visual aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and its Dolby 2.0 does what little can be done with the muddy soundtrack, but is rather better with the jauntily creepy score. The only special features on this Tartan issue are the trailer, the director's production notes and a reel of trailers for other Tartan horror movies. --Roz Kaveney

Kermit Miss Piggy Animal Fozzie Bear and the rest of the Muppets including newcomer Pepe the Prawn discover the true meaning of the holiday spirit. All dogs do go to heaven...and some lucky few return to earth. That's what happens when mischievous mutt Charlie Barkin (Charlie Sheen) is asked to retrieve Gabriel's horn when it is stolen from heaven. Seeing his chance to have some fun Charlie recruits his sidekick Itchy (Dom DeLuise) and happily steps up to the challenge. Immediately the two get sidetracked into trouble...until a sweet young runaway boy and a beautiful Irish Setter (Sheena Easton) set them straight. But time is running out and if Charlie is going to secure the valuable horn he will have to prove himself worthy of his wings by taking on two incredible villains in a hair-raising breathtaking race to the finish!

Under Surveilance: Two insurance investigators are attempting to uncover truth behind the death of a colleague but their routine inquiry turns deadly when they are led to some dark truths about the company for which they work and the very people they consider as their friends... The Hit: In a drunken rage of jealousy and anger over the breakdown of his marriage to Sonia (Joanna Pacula) and the loss of custody of his son Jesse Kieth (Maxwell Caulfield) a crime reporter for a big city daily decides to take out a contract to have his wife killed courtesy of his business school buddy Levine (Robert Pine). When he comes to his senses the next morning and tries to cancel the arrangement Kieth cannot reach Levine whom we discover has been shot for ripping off the mob. As he cannot involve the police Kieth finds himself protecting his estranged wife from the contract killer he has hired but won't be able to recognise.

  Re-Animator was undoubtedly one of the most notorious horror films of the 1980's. However a chilling side effect to West's discovery leads to a seemingly endless night of mind-bending terror and unthinkable madness.
