Baddiel And Skinner - Unplanned - Live From London's West End | DVD | (27/09/2007)
from £6.38
| Saving you £13.61 (213.32%)
| RRP Baddiel & Skinner Unplanned--Live from London's West End is a fairly straightforward stage recreation of the comedy duo's television format. Unscripted and unrehearsed, the show relies on the improvisational skills of the long-standing partnership, mainly responding to questions put to them from the audience. As might be supposed, the whole thing is a little hit or miss. Too often it descends into idle prattle between the two, much of it based in toilet or sexual humour--not for nothing was the legend "Ladies Beware" emblazoned across the front of the theatre, although the majority of the participating audience members on this video are female. There is much to laugh at though, particularly from Skinner, who proves that he really is one of the best at this sort of off-the-cuff comedy. This is an ideal purchase for fans of the television show and those not put off by the continued swearing and general rudeness, but really not as good as the fantastic Fantasy Football.--Phil Udell

Four Rooms | DVD | (24/06/2002)
from £6.73
| Saving you £8.26 (122.73%)
| RRP Four Rooms is an unbearable quartet of stories written and directed by hot filmmakers Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction), Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi), Allison Anders (Gas Food Lodging), and Alexandre Rockwell (In the Soup), which only proves that even the smart guys can really blow it sometimes. The anthology is linked by the hotel in which all the events are taking place, and by Tim Roth as a bellboy flitting from scene to scene. Nobody overcomes the insufferable air of self-congratulation that permeates this exercise in forced hipness. Others involved include Bruce Willis, Madonna, Lili Taylor, Ione Skye, Jennifer Beals, and Antonio Banderas.--Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

A League of Their Own | Blu Ray | (15/05/2017)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP Penny Marshall's popular 1992 comedy sheds light on a little-known chapter of American sports history with its story of a struggling team in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The league was formed when the recruiting of soldiers during World War II resulted in a shortage of men's baseball teams. The AAGPBL continued after the war (until 1954), and Marshall's movie depicts the league in full swing, beginning when a savvy baseball scout (Jon Lovitz) finds a pair of promising new players in small-town Oregon sisters (Geena Davis, Lori Petty). The sisters are signed to play for the Rockford Peaches near Chicago, whose new manager (Tom Hanks) is a former home-run king who wrecked his career with alcoholism. They're all a bunch of underdogs, and Marshall (with a witty script by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel) does a fine job of establishing a colorful team of supporting players including Madonna and (in her movie debut) Rosie O'Donnell. It's a conventional Hollywood sports story (Marshall's never been one to take dramatic risks) but the stellar cast is delightful and the movie's filled with memorable moments, witty dialogue and agreeable sentiment. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com
The One Game | DVD | (26/09/2016)
from £7.99
| Saving you £7.00 (87.61%)
| RRP The 1988 Carlton mini-movie The One Game is the perfect definition of cult TV. Originally shown as four Saturday night instalments, it was a success with audiences and critics alike at the time and remains an extremely original piece of television. On the surface, the story is as simple: an ex-business partner exacts a very personal revenge. The game being played by Magnus (an almost unrecognisable Patrick Malahide) upon the arrogant Nick (Stephen Dillon) makes the tale far more interesting, however. If the premise sounds a little familiar, that's because the 1997 Michael Douglas movie The Game has striking similarities. The show captured society's interest in games at exactly the right time. First there's the Arthurian context, which visually struck a chord with a decade of Dungeons and Dragons fans. Then there's the constant reference to the new dawn of computer games, which everyone was excited about going into the 90s. But Nick is embroiled in a theory of Reality Gaming that turns everything on its head. He doesn't know who of his friends or colleagues may be in on the game, and since it begins with the sting of a £2 million theft, he's prepared to make sacrifices along the way. Changes in fashion and technology can't detract from what remains a cracking good yarn, well told and well played. On the DVD: The One Game arrives on disc superbly packaged. The attractive box contains an informative booklet relating the show's place in TV history. Unfortunately there's nothing at all in the way of extras on the disc itself--a disappointment, which, like the 4:3 ratio and stereo sound, is only to be expected for an all-but forgotten gem. --Paul Tonks
