This new creature loves destruction and chaos; he's considered dangerous enough to be exiled to a deep space lockup. But 626 steals a spaceship and escapes touching down in Hawaii where he ends up in a dog pound. He's adopted by Lilo a spunky young girl who renames her new pet Stitch. Stitch turns out to be quite a handful--his destructive impulses are on full display as he trashes Lilo's house among other naughty acts. Lilo is being raised by her older sister Nani (their parents died in an accident) and they are under surveillance by an evil social worker Cobra Bubbles who wants to take Lilo away from Nani. Lilo must tame Stitch or his bad behavior could be held against Nani by Cobra. Meanwhile Stitch is being pursued by his creator Jumba who has followed him to Earth to try to recapture him. But Stitch becomes steadily more thoughtful and well-behaved as he grows to love Lilo and becomes a part of her family. The film's animation is done in the traditional 2-D style complete with beautifully drawn watercolor backgrounds which give it a dreamy colorful handcrafted appeal.

  • David Oistrakh - Artist Of The People? [1994]David Oistrakh - Artist Of The People? | DVD | (26/08/2002) from £28.53   |  Saving you £-10.54 (-58.60%)   |  RRP £17.99

Bruno Monsaingeon's David Oistrakh: Artist of the People? is a probing portrait of perhaps the most thought-provoking of modern violin virtuosi, and a good companion to his similarly revealing documentary on pianist Sviatoslav Richter. Although conversation with the man himself is minimal (Oistrakh died in 1974), Monsaingeon is able to draw upon the priceless reminiscences of those who worked with him, including his son Igor, conductor Gennady Rozhdestvensky, cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, protegé Gidon Kremer, and the late Yehudi Menuhin: their frank and sincere comments on Soviet society make for sobering listening. Equally important, the range of Oistrakh's repertoire is covered, from Bach to Shostakovich, in footage covering half a century of performance. The musicianship and humanity of a life dedicated to music in the face of an often ruthless establishment is powerfully and movingly evoked. This is a documentary that no-one interested in great music-making or 20th-century culture should miss. On the DVD: David Oistrakh: Artist of the People? reproduces its disparate sources with remarkable consistency in a 4:3 picture, and if the high level transfer of the musical extracts gives a harder edge to Oistrakh's sound than was the case, the Linear PCM Stereo itself is fine. There are subtitles in five European languages, and a useful background article by Monsaingeon, similarly translated, in the booklet. --Richard Whitehouse

Serenity: Can't stop the signal... Beloved television cult director Joss Whedon (Buffy The Vampire Slayer Angel) makes a spectacular first foray onto the big screen with Serenity the cinematic adaptation of his wildly popular but short-lived sci-fi series Firefly. A mix of space western comedy and drama Serenity follows captain Malcolm ""Mal"" Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and his ragtag crew as they trade their way around the edges of civilized society. Of particular interest are two passengers they take on Simon and River Tam (Sean Maher and Summer Glau) a brother and his telepathic sister on the run from the corrupt governing Alliance. As notorious former members of the anti-Alliance opposition Mal and his crew make it difficult for Simon and River to stay hidden. Everything goes completely awry when a government assassin is sent to retrieve River. As Mal is forced to choose between his close-knit crew and the brother and sister newcomers it becomes apparent that River harbors both a dangerous secret and astounding fighting powers and Mal decides that discovering the truth about what she knows might just be worth his time. Many of the film's action sequences revolve around Summer Glau's martial arts skills in her portrayal of River. Glau prepared for her role with Hong Kong stuntwoman Ming Lu as well as stunt coordinators Chad Stahelski and Hiro Koda and as a result performed nearly all the stuntwork herself. In addition to the stellar stunts realistic graphics and an often haunting score the film's actors display a rare chemistry that brings viewers both into their lives and into a possible version of humanity's future. (Dir. Joss Wheldon 2005) The One: In order to save the universe he will have to fight the fiercest enemy he has ever faced: himself!
