Considered by critics a pinnacle of slasher movies, STAGEFRIGHT is now finally given the release it deserves, from a new 4K restoration, for us to marvel at the inventive genius of director Michele Soavi (Cemetery Man, The Sect, The Church) combining relentless graphic blood-splattered set pieces with his trademark witty filmmaking elegance - a quality not normally associated with slasher movies ! Soavi intended his film to be called Aquarius - or aquarium - alluding to the viewer being able to see the action as if it took place inside a fishbowl. Cleverly constructed to heighten suspense, the director intentionally mixes fake with reality: showing us the real' serial killer of our film as he infiltrates a group of stage actors rehearsing overnight in an isolated place; he kills and takes the place of the actor whose role in the play is that of a killer permanently hidden under a giant owl head! His identity unseen, the now real killer-owl stalks and dismembers the troupe one by one! Schooled by Dario Argento and Terry Gilliam but with his own unique personal flair, Soavi's first feature can finally be seen as intended, with this edition further benefitting from the director's colour grading and framing indications given during a candid conversation filmed exclusively for one of the many Extras on this Special Edition disc. Bonus Features Special Features: New 4K-Restored version Interview: Director Michele Soavi Staging the Fright Interview: Actor Giovanni Lombardo Radice The Theater of Blood Interview: Actor David Brandon The Last Performance New subtitles and Hard-of-Hearing Closed Captions
Shameless proudly presents the 1st ever Cinema-of-Death anthology of Ruggero Deodato, Mr Cannibal himself, the director of possibly the nastiest Video Nasties which have since become cult must-see and now subject of top academic research, public debates and high-brow critical acclaim. Cannibal HolocaustCannibal Holocaust on its 1st release, director Deodato was charged with killing his own cast - and jailed! In UK, it incarnated THE Video Nasty. Banned and then cut by several minutes, it took a full 30 years for the censors to relax their grip! We present two versions of this, the most controversial film ever made: A unique Director's re-edit (shown 1st in London's West-End) which tones down the animal cruelty (to fit better with 21st Century sensibilities) without shortening the film. The other is the full strength 80s dish! Very strong stuff - especially because of its unsurpassed, documentary-like, extremely realistic depiction of gory violence. With this landmark film Deodato single-handedly invented the 'found-footage' genre (imitated by Blair Witch et al). Often imitated, this is The Original and unequaled best. House On The Edge Of The ParkThe House On The Edge Of The Park also a Video Nasty, this claustrophobic staging of a vicious home-invasion scenario explodes into slasher torture hell, with star David Hess giving one of the strongest performances of his career and Deodato a master-class in directing, proving again that under the blood and guts there is a brilliant film maker formed by Neo-realism. Special Features: Deodato and star Giovanni Lombardo Radice in a public debate with senior BBFC examiner. In-depth interview with the late David Hess. The Phantom of DeathIn The Phantom of Death Deodato's unwavering directing meets a barnstorming performance from Michael York (Cabaret, Austin Powers) as the pianist virtuoso who suddenly starts aging at alarming speed - progeria, a devastating real-life affliction. With death closing in fast, the pianist loses his mind in a murderous frenzy of brutal hackings... Edwige Fenech and Donald Pleasence co-star.
Best known for making movies about men and violence, director Walter Hill scored a misfire with this ambitious but ultimately dreary remake of Akira Kurosawa's samurai classic Yojimbo. The story's essentially the same but the setting has been switched to a dusty, almost ghostly Texas town in the 1930s, where two rival Chicago gangs are locked in an uneasy truce. Bruce Willis plays the lone drifter who allies himself with both gangs to his own advantage, working both sides against each other according to his own hidden agenda. The violence escalates to a bloody climax, of course, with Christopher Walken, David Patrick Kelly and Michael Imperioli as trigger-happy lieutenants in a lonely, desolate war. Fans of gangster movies will want to see this, and, if nothing else, Hill has brought his polished style to a vaguely mythic story. It's far from being a classic, however, and although its action is at times masterfully choreographed, the movie's humourless attitude is unexpectedly oppressive. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com
