  Though this graphic 1996 version of HG Wells' The Island of Dr Moreau was roasted by critics, it's an utterly fascinating failure, largely due to the performances of David Thewlis, Val Kilmer and especially Marlon Brando in the title role as a mad (and in this case outrageously bizarre) scientist whose experiments in crossbreeding humans with animals have gone terribly awry. Thewlis plays the wayward scholar who is rescued at sea by Kilmer and brought to Moreau's island to discover the doctor's unnatural "children". Fairuza Balk plays Moreau's half-cat daughter, but it's Brando and Kilmer (in one scene doing a killer Brando impersonation) who steal the show, along with the astounding make-up effects created by Stan Winston. But don't let that deter you from this ebullient movie experience. Hilary and Jackie is a bisected story (each sister's tale is told in the same amount of screen time) teeming with heartfelt drama that belies the cheap shots it received from its detractors. It's stirring, reckless, loving, involving, and rife with unconventional passion; passion for music, life, art, and the delicate relationship between these two synchronous, extraordinary sisters as played by brilliant actors Emily Watson and Rachel Griffiths (both of whom earned Oscar nods). Though Watson got the juicy, showy role as Jackie, it's Griffiths who provides the heart, soul, and spine of the film. And director Tucker has that gift of being able to explain through the visual medium what is happening inside of his character's heads. He's helped by a fine screenplay by Frank Boyce Cottrell. No matter what the truth of Hilary and Jackie might really be, this is an exceptional, rare film that is defined and graced by fine acting and writing. --Paula Nechak

  Part love story, part comedy, part study of madness, Some Voices is above all a beautifully observed, elegantly written and brilliantly acted low-key British film. The story of Ray (Daniel Craig) and his relationships with his brother Pete (Dave Morrissey) and new girlfriend Laura (Kelly Macdonald) after his release from psychiatric hospital, it is the interaction between the three that forms the cornerstone of the movie. Craig dominates proceedings as his character finds himself needlessly torn between the two, capturing Ray's descent into madness far better than the rather unnecessary over use of visual effects. The interplay between all three is superb, particularly Craig and Macdonald who spend the first two-thirds of the story developing a dependence that is pure sweetness and light before darkness descends. Director Simon Cellan Jones (whose previous credits include Our Friends in the North) allows his first feature film to develop at it's own pace, letting the script and performances dictate the action. The West London setting fizzes with a life that Notting Hill barely hinted at, proving that a movie set in the capital (or indeed made in Britain) doesn't have to rely on mock cockney gangster stereotypes to reflect the city. This is a self-assured, engaging and ultimately moving piece of filmmaking. On the DVD: The accompanying documentary and interviews offer little insight into the process and are edited down to minute-long segments with little attempt to examine the bigger picture. Jones' commentary, however, does provide an interesting insight into the perils of making a film on a small budget. --Phil Udell

  Regan is classic TV drama that will have you saying, "they don't make 'em like that any more". This is the feature-length pilot to what became the long-running TV series The Sweeney, starring John Thaw and Dennis Waterman as the hard-as-nails Flying Squad double act. The story opens in a south London pub decorated in shades of brown so manifold that it forms a patina on the screen more normally associated with a painterly artist. It's the early 1970s, and Thaw's Inspector Regan is a lone ranger fighting on several fronts including the imminent modernisation of the police force, which he describes as a vision of "hundreds of little grey men working on top of each other, pots of tea and committees". The dialogue is clever, rich and funny. When Regan tries to persuade Carter to work with him on the case he growls: "Mary darling, I'm not trying to start an affair with you." The heroes have thinning hair and bad habits: Regan drinks whiskey in the middle of the day and constantly smokes, he's lost his wife, let down his daughter, and then loses his girlfriend (Maureen Lipman). The filming is wonderfully crafted--shots taken from odd angles, action that surprises and gritty London locations. "You're a copper. You belong like me out in the cold," Regan says to Carter in the last scene as they go off to get a drink out of licensed hours. Not the end, but the start of a beautiful relationship. --Joan Byrne
