  • An Inspector Calls [DVD] An Inspector Calls | DVD | (21/09/2015) from £8.19  |  Saving you £1.80 (18.00%)  |  RRP £9.99

An emotionally powerful and sharply relevant adaptation of JB Priestley's timeless masterpiece. An Inspector Calls is both an enthralling mystery and a scathing critique of a hypocritical, class-obsessed society. Set in 1912, it vividly evokes a thriving industrial age built on crippling social inequality. Taking place over the course of a single night, this taut, affecting and ultimately tragic story centres on the prosperous Birling family. They receive a surprise visit from Inspector Goole (David Thewlis) who is investigating the suicide of a young girl, a former factory worker of Mr Birling's. Interrogating each family member in turn, Goole's incisive questioning reveals that each one not only had a connection to the girl but also may have played a significant part in her demise. As the family's callous actions are brought to light, so are dark and shameful secrets that threaten to tear the Birling household apart and destroy its reputation. David Thewlis (Harry Potter, War Horse) stars as The Inspector, Ken Stott (The Hobbit, Rebus) stars as Arthur Birling and Miranda Richardson (Mapp & Lucia, Parades End) stars as his wife Sybil Birling. Also starring Chloe Pirrie (The Game, Black Mirror), Kyle Soller (Poldark, Anna Karenina), Sophie Rundle (Happy Valley, Peaky Blinders) and Finn Cole (Peaky Blinders).

  • Anonymous [DVD] Anonymous | DVD | (05/03/2012) from £3.00  |  Saving you £14.99 (83.30%)  |  RRP £17.99

Historical romp Anonymous takes an academic controversy (did the man named Shakespeare write the plays attributed to him?) and whips it into a lurid melodrama, crammed with political intrigue, heaving bosoms, flashing swordplay, conspiracies, forced marriage, incest, and more. Towards the end of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford (Rhys Ifans, Enduring Love), seeks an outlet for his poetic drive: he tries to get the playwright Ben Jonson (Sebastian Armesto) to present his plays as Jonson's own. Jonson is reluctant to undercut his own work… but his friend, a vainglorious illiterate actor by the name of William Shakespeare (Rafe Spall), happily claims the glory when Oxford's plays prove hugely popular. But the real story of Anonymous isn't about authorship, it's about machinations to capture the throne of England when Elizabeth (Vanessa Redgrave) dies. Wily counselors vie with dashing secret heirs, royal dallying leads to shocking secrets, and supposedly the plays are inextricably caught up in it all--except that they're not, really, and so Anonymous, for all its clever plotting and lush production values, falls flat by the end. Still, it's an enjoyable confection up to then, and showcases some lovely (if woefully historically inaccurate--the mosh-pit moment is delightfully preposterous) presentations of bits of the plays. Also featuring David Thewlis (Naked) and Joely Richardson, daughter of Ms. Redgrave, playing the younger Elizabeth. --Bret Fetzer

Smart, humorously absurd and bracingly humane, Anomalisa is a technically stunning work of animation, beautifully orchestrated by co-director Duke Johnson and scored by Carter Burwell (Carol, In Bruges, Fargo).
