  An approaching Alien spaceship is detected on monitoring equipment at UNIT HQ where the Brigadier is entertaining two visitors - Chinn a civil servant making a security inspection and Bill Filer an American agent sent to discuss the threat of the Master. The Ship lands in England and the UNIT team joined by Hardiman and Winser from the nearby Nuton power station meet its occupants: beautiful golden-skinned humanoids called Axons. The Axons claim that their ship Axos is damaged and that they need time in which to repair it. In return they offer Axonite a substance that can cause animals to grow to enormous sizes and thus end food shortages. The Doctor is suspicious and rightly so: Axos Axonite and the Axons - whose true appearance is hideous - are all part of a single parasitic entity brought to Earth by the Master to feed on the planet's energy. The Doctor manages to materialise his TARDIS with the Master on board at the centre of Axos. He offers to link the two ships together to make one giant time machine on condition that Axos in return helps him to take revenge on the Time Lords for exiling him to earth. This is merely a trick however and Axos is locked in a time loop from which it can never escape. The Doctor returns to Earth in the TARDIS where he reluctantly admits to the Brigadier that the Master may also have escaped

  It Came from Beneath the Sea appeared two years after Ray Harryhausen unleashed The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms upon New York City. This time the master special-effects creator turned loose a giant (albeit six-armed) octopus on San Francisco, and the result is another enjoyable atom-age adventure that should please fans of vintage science fiction. Kenneth Tobey, who battled The Thing (From Another World) in 1951, stars as a Navy captain pursuing a monstrous octopoid (sextapoid?) after it attacks his atomic sub. After it wreaks havoc with shipping lanes, he tracks the creature to San Francisco for a final showdown. Scripting by George Worthing Yates (Them) and Hal Smith and direction by Robert Gordon are perfunctory at best, which gives the always-reliable Tobey and costar Faith Domergue little to do, but this is Harryhausen's show, and his monster, though the budget was restrained, is still impressive. Younger audiences weaned on digital FX may find this creaky, but nostalgic viewers will enjoy its simple thrills. --Paul Gaita

  There can be few better ways reminding oneself of the key elements in late 1990s left-of-centre Hollywood than watching Feeling Minnesota. The film attempts to draw together most of the main themes from the post-Pulp Fiction world into one whole. The story--young lovers Freddie and Jjacks (sic) on the run from a criminal past--is pure True Romance, with an attempt to throw in a little Cohen brothers' style weirdness. It's not a bad film--how can any film that opens with a Johnny Cash tune not have some degree of style to it?--just one that misses that certain spark. The casting of Diaz and Reeves is hopelessly mismatched, the former's delightfully light touch during the film's many funny moments merely serving to heighten Reeves' clod hopping. He is slightly better when playing opposite brother and husband to Freddie Sam (Vincent D'Onofrio), but is unavoidably the film's weak link. It can't be denied that by pushing all the relevant buttons, Feeling Minnesota manages to provide a couple of hours of reasonably engrossing entertainment but, like the Bob Dylan version of "Ring of Fire" that closes the film, the originals are still the best. On the DVD: The de rigeur credible rock soundtrack is given extra sparkle by the DVD's audio quality, but the extras available are slight. The "making-of" featurette offers little more than one of those infuriating extended adverts that are passed off as film documentaries, while the cast interview section is presented in a series of a few second answers to a succession of uninspiring questions. --Phil Udell

  In the tradition of 'Creepshow' and 'Tales From The Darkside' comes 'Things' a horror anthology about the evil created by men. Presenting three weirdly intertwining stories 'Things' revolves around a scorned wife getting revenge on her husband's bit on the side through bondage humiliation and telling her scary stories! Thus the sadistic mayor of a small town terrorises three misplaced hookers by unleashing the thing in the box. A battered betrayed and murdered wife (or rather what is left of her) slithers out of the grave to exact her brutal retribution. If you like a good fry-up for breakfast you're in for a treat! And in a hysterical finale see what the spurned wife has stashed in the garage - it will have you hopping with mirth!
