With her ravishingly sensual take on HERMAN MELVILLE's Billy Budd, Sailor, CLAIRE DENIS (White Material) firmly established herself as one of the great visual tone poets of our time. Amid the azure waters and sunbaked desert landscapes of Djibouti, a French Foreign Legion sergeant (Mauvais sang's DENIS LAVANT) sows the seeds of his own ruin as his obsession with a striking young recruit (35 Shots of Rum's GRÉGOIRE COLIN) plays out to the thunderous, operatic strains of BENJAMIN BRITTEN. Denis and cinematographer AGNÈS GODARD (Let the Sunshine In) fold military and masculine codes of honor, colonialism's legacy, destructive jealousy, and repressed desire into shimmering, hypnotic images that ultimately explode in one of the most startling and unforgettable endings in all of modern cinema. Special Features: New 4K digital restoration, supervised by director of photography Agnès Godard and approved by director Claire Denis, with uncompressed stereo soundtrack New conversation between Denis and filmmaker Barry Jenkins New selected scene commentary with Godard New interviews with actors Denis Lavant and Grégoire Colin New video essay by film scholar Judith Mayne New English subtitle translation PLUS: An essay by critic Girish Shambu

  • Beau Travail [DVD]Beau Travail | DVD | (25/02/2013) from £10.78   |  Saving you £5.21 (48.33%)   |  RRP £15.99

Inspired by Herman Melville's 'Billy Budd', filmmaker Claire Denis' 'Beau Travail' is a stunning combination of literature, music and dance that explores the near-mythical world of the French Foreign Legion. Dennis Lavant stars as Galoup, a sergeant-major whose position and power are threatened when the bravery and heroism of new recruit Sentain (Gregoire Colin) attracts the attention of the platoon's commandant (Michel Subor). Enraged, Galoup plots Sentain's downfall, a doomed course of action that leads to his own undoing. Director Denis creates a dark mounting tension that underlies the exquisite cinematography of Agnes Godard, whose stark visual style contrasts vividly with the graceful training rituals of the sculpted young soldiers.

One of the very finest French films released in 2000, Claire Denis' resetting of Billy Budd among modern-day French Foreign Legionnaires welds near-experimental formal minimalism with a savage exposure of male aggression, jealousy and repressed homosexual desire, all set in an eye-peeling desert setting and choreographed to the grunts of men at work. Ravaged-featured Denis Lavant plays Galoup, who narrates his story in flashback, perhaps at the moment before his life ends. A sergeant in charge of a troop of Legionnaires, Galoup's position as the favourite of the Commander (Michel Subor) is threatened by the arrival of pretty-boy Sentain (Grégoire Colin, who played the spoiled wastrel in The Dream Life of Angels). Galloup plots to discredit his rival. As the drama unfolds through indirection and Galloup's unreliable disclosures, Denis dwells lovingly on the ballet of men at work as the soldiers run through their obstacle courses, practice combat pas de deux and disport like lean, khaki-clad dolphins by the Mediterranean shore. Sort of like Full Metal Jacket meets early Derek Jarman. It's a sensuous and exquisite film, as perceptive about relationships between men as it is about those between colonisers and the colonised. --Leslie Felperin

Les Amants du Pont Neuf is a film that once more shows us Paris as a city of romance, but from a very different viewpoint than we might expect. The young lovers this time around are Alex and Michelle, two of the many homeless people sleeping rough on the streets of the capital. Their particular abode is the bridge of the title, the oldest such structure in the city, which they share with the older, wiser Hans. Gradually drawn together, they look for and find love in what is a particularly loveless and harsh environment. Director Leos Carax created a film that combined great beauty with an almost nightmarish reality, particularly in a gruesome opening image of a homeless hostel which seems to have a documentary feel to it. Juliette Binoche and Dennis Lavant are superb as the lovers, drawing us in to their world of joy, despair and anger. Ultimately, Les Amants du Pont Neuf manages to pull off that rare feat of being both visually stunning and emotionally engaging. On the DVD: Paris may have been filmed countless times before and since, but rarely has its beauty been so captured as here. With the action taking place mainly at night or twilight, the colours are rich and vivid or ghostly pale; both extremes are beautifully captured on this format. Resplendent with many stunning set pieces (noteably the fireworks that light up the city), this is one of the most visually sumptuous films of recent years. Carax, too, makes great use of silence, allowing the sounds of the city to reflect the mood of his characters. Extras are sadly virtually non-existent beyond the usual scene selection and biographies, but the film's style demands that it be seen on the only format to do it justice. --Phil Udell

Deep in the Woods is an average horror film, unusual only because it was made in France. A troupe of young actors who specialise in school performances are hired by sinister aristocrat Francois Berleand to perform their "Little Red Riding Hood" act at his remote mansion as a birthday treat for his strangely silent grandson. As is often the case, the film works better in the early stages as it piles on the omens and disturbing touches, with unsettling byplay between host and guests, than it does in the extended finale, which features the familiar demises of most of the cast as someone dressed in the Big Bad Wolf costume stalks with a spear-gun and unorthodox use is made of a handy nail gun. The young, attractive victims bicker and get naked just like in a rubbish American movie and leading lady/likely survivor Clotilde Courau (best known as the young Anne Parillaud in Map of the Human Heart) is wasted in a nothing role, but mad people Berleand and Lavant provide some entertainment value.--Kim Newman
