Titles Comprise: Hostel: A trio of teenagers two American one Icelandic backpack around Europe looking for a good time. While in Amsterdam they are told of a youth hostel in Slovakia where all their wildest dreams will come true. Jumping onto the first train there the three stumble into a hedonistic travellers' paradise. Soon however one of the three boys goes missing and slowly but surely the holiday from hell begins to unfold... Hostel 2: Director Eli Roth (Hostel Cabin Fever) and producer Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction Reservoir Dogs) up the ante in the brutal and terrifying sequel to the smash hit Hostel. Starring Bijou Phillips (Almost Famous Venom) Heather Matarazzo (The Princess Diaries Scream 3) and Roger Bart (The Producers TV's Desperate Housewives) Hostel Part II takes place directly after the events of the first film and once again also features Jay Hernandez (Hostel Ladder 49) as the revenge-seeking but ultimately hapless Paxton. After the outrageous events of Hostel Hostel Part II follows a group of female backpackers as they are lured to the apparently perfect youth hostel for a holiday packed with hedonistic fun. However the truth once again turns out to be far more terrifying as the girls are subjected to a brutal ordeal at the hands of the sick tourists who pay to exercise their darkest desires. Hatchet: It's Mardi Gras in New Orleans and Ben (Joel David Moore) has reached booze and boobs overload. Recently dumped and pining after his girlfriend he enlists his pal Marcus (Deon Richmond) to accompany him on a swamp tour in a boat that travels the spooky murk surrounding the city. Marcus is less than enthused until the crew of the low low low (low) budget movie Bayou Beavers signs on including amateur cameraman Shapiro (Joel Murray) pneumatic Misty (Mercedes McNab) and ditzy Jenna (Joleigh Fioreavanti). Joining them on the rickety cruiser are the painfully wholesome couple Mr. and Mrs. Permatteo (Richard Riehle and Patrika Darbo) and the beautiful-but-sullen Marybeth (Tamara Feldman). Led by the P.T. Barnum of the swamp tour industry fast-talking but slow-thinking showboater Shawn (Parry Shen) the tourists are decidedly underwhelmed by the fog low-hanging branches and aggressively quiet sounds that Shawn tries to pass off as frightening. He launches into the story of Victor Crowley - yup a legend in these parts - who is known to haunt the swamp. The boaters wave off the story as part of Shawn's continuing nonsense - except for Marybeth who is notably discomforted.

  • Jason And The Argonauts [DVD]Jason And The Argonauts | DVD | (28/09/2015) from £4.99   |  Saving you £8.00 (160.32%)   |  RRP £12.99

This version of Jason and the Argonauts is not a remake of the classic 1963 Ray Harryhausen feature, but a new re-telling of the Greek legend. It takes just as many liberties with the saga, but--with a running time twice as long as the original--it packs in much more of the story, building to an exciting finale filled with betrayal, retribution and copious sword-play. Made by mini-series specialists Hallmark, who also produced a lavish version of Homer's The Odyssey (1997), only the rapid fades where the commercial breaks would be really give away the fact that this is a TV feature. The multinational cast is variable, and while Jason London is unhappily wooden in the title role, such stars as Denis Hopper and Frank Langella are good value, American accents aside. Coming straight from the big screen sword and sandal epic, Gladiator, Derek Jacobi adds sheer class, while Jolene Blalock makes a breathtaking debut as Medea. The visual atmosphere is strong; the superb cinematography varying between lush beauty and the stark, sun-bleached look of Pitch Black. Production values are excellent, with several increasingly powerful and spectacular action set-pieces incorporating outstanding (for TV) CGI effects, the whole being immeasurably lifted by British composer Simon Boswell's splendid musical score.--Gary S. Dalkin

  • All The King's Men [1949]All The King's Men | DVD | (09/07/2001) from £9.54   |  Saving you £10.45 (109.54%)   |  RRP £19.99

The Best Picture Oscar in 1949 went to All the King's Men, a hard-hitting political melodrama that will strike any number of eerily familiar chords with audiences weaned on later American politics: from the Kennedys to Nixon, Bill Clinton and beyond, US politicians obviously haven't changed much in the intervening decades. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, this grittily realistic movie charts the rise and fall of Willie Stark (Broderick Crawford in an Oscar-winning role), a hick lawyer whose ideals are inexorably eroded by his relentless pursuit of power. When we first meet him, Stark is the people's champion, a struggling self-taught advocate who isn't afraid to speak out against "graft". Although inspired by the real-life story of Louisiana Governor Huey Pierce Long, All the King's Men also parallels the much later Primary Colors (1998), which is itself a thinly disguised portrait of Bill Clinton's presidential campaign. Like that movie, this one tells the tale from the point of view of a young idealist (John Ireland) who succumbs to the fledgling politician's charm and joins his campaign team. There he meets cynical aide Sadie Burke (Mercedes McCambridge, in another Oscar-winning role) and together they connive at and excuse every increasingly corrupt move made in the name of political expediency, until matters get dangerously out of hand after the governor's son kills his girlfriend in a drunk-driving incident (a spooky premonition of Chappaquidick?). The performances are all top-notch, as is the fast-paced screenplay and direction from Robert Rossen (later director of The Hustler in 1961). Less idealistic than Capra's Mr Smith Goes to Washington, this is a movie ahead of its time which still has plenty to say about the state of modern politics, American or otherwise. --Mark Walker

A BRAND NEW RESTORATION COMMEMORATING THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ORIGINAL WWII RAID A much-loved British classic, Michael Anderson's 1955 drama captures the tension and bravery of an audacious raid on the center of Nazi Germany's industrial complex and the quintessentially English combination of inventiveness and dogged determination. Split into two distinct sections, the film deals first with the fraught, but the ultimately successful development of a new bomb, by Dr. Barnes N. Wallis (Michael Redgrave). The second deals with the mission itself during the British raid on the Ruhr Dams, and its associated costs for the enemy and for the British airmen. Adapted by R.C. Sherriff from Paul Brickhill's book Enemy Coast AheadĀ and featuring superlative special effects photography by Gilbert Taylor (to say nothing of Eric Coates' stirring theme tune), The Dam Busters was Britain's biggest box office the success of 1955
