The tagline states, "Only love can bring you to your senses." Well, your senses have to be pretty dulled to love At First Sight. On paper the story--based on the writings of medical writer extraordinaire Oliver Sacks (Awakenings)--is intriguing: a blind man regains sight after surgery yet can never connect with what he sees, including a lovely new girlfriend. Indeed, maybe blind was better. From such interesting stuff (and a talented cast) comes a tepid love story and an unconvincing drama. Val Kilmer plays Virgil, a serene resort worker who plays hockey in the dark and is the best masseur this side of the Catskills. Onto his table comes Amy, a bone-weary NYC architect (Mira Sorvino) who cries the first time Virgil does his magic. Instead of a voyage into the world of blindness, Amy's first instinct is to take Virgil to an eye doctor who can restore sight (Bruce Davison). Virgil receives sight, crumbling the trust between him and Amy. The clichés start building up and by the time Amy is wooed by her ex-husband (Steven Weber), her boss no less, one's patience wears thin. The medical curiosities of the story--Virgil can see an item but can't grasp what it is until he touches it--do not translate well on screen. The film's liveliest character is Nathan Lane as a teacher of the blind. A scene with Virgil that gets to the heart of his ailment is so filled with spontaneity, one wonders if it was scripted or simply Lane's own extemporaneous dialogue. After an admirable start as a director (Guilty by Suspicion), Oscar-winning producer Irwin Winkler has not been able to put cinematic highs or believable angst into his films (The Net, Night in the City). At First Sight may look good but it is blind where it counts. --Doug Thomas

It's been said that Diana Krall is a more successful recording artist than she is a live performer, yet Live in Paris seems to have captured the best of both worlds. Krall has evolved into a performer of extraordinary intensity. She treats what is essentially a set of jazz vocal standards as a kind of musical performance poetry which reflects the subtlest nuance of every lyric; while her dark, seemingly effortless contralto is a near-perfect jazz instrument. This performance features Krall's regular band plus a vast orchestra that tends to detract (and subtract) from her under-rated piano playing, but there are still any number of highlights, such as "All or Nothing at All" and "'S Wonderful". On the DVD: the additional features on this 16:9 DVD (which has stereo, DTS and Dolby surround audio options and which is PS2 compatible) are mostly excellent. The rehearsal footage is almost better than the concert, and some of Krall's interpretations bring knowing smiles to the faces of some of the female members of the orchestra. Of the two rather MTV-friendly video features, the first (for "The Look of Love") is superb; while the second (for "Let's Face the Music and Dance"), all aggressive lighting and nasty makeup, has Krall clumping around like a big-boned drag queen, but it's really the only fault in an otherwise perfect release. --Roger Thomas

  • Diana Krall - Live In MontrealDiana Krall - Live In Montreal | DVD | (29/11/2004) from £9.09   |  Saving you £5.90 (39.40%)   |  RRP £14.99

Diana Krall: Live at the Montreux Jazz Festival is a portrait of an already-accomplished musician in the process of evolving into a great artist. Always a fine jazz pianist, an expressive singer, and a capable interpreter (mostly of the Great American Songbook), Krall spent little time developing an original voice prior to her marriage to Elvis Costello and her CD The Girl in the Other Room, which features multiple songwriting collaborations with Costello as well as more adventurous choices in cover material (Joni Mitchell's "Black Crow", Tom Waits's "Temptation"). That 2004 recording is the centerpiece of this concert; fully nine of the 13 selections here, including the Waits and Mitchell songs as well as five Costello-Krall compositions, were drawn from it. Purists may lament the lessening of the straight-ahead jazz element in Krall's music (indeed, with its simple major chords and countryish lilt, the original "Narrow Daylight" will inevitably invite comparisons to Norah Jones). But Krall and her excellent band still swing mightily (cf. an extended version of the standard "All or Nothing at All") and improvise like the seasoned jazz pros they are. It's a heady combination: Krall is at least as good an instrumentalist as her contemporaries; add to that her singing and now an interest in songwriting that reflects the influence of pop music as well as jazz, and you have a genuinely unique talent. --Sam Graham
