  A group of well-healed friends head out on a sailing trip to a isolated volcanic island in the Mediterranean. When time comes to return to the yacht the group discover that Anna (the film's focus up to this point) is missing. Sandro (Anna's flame) and Claudia (her close friend) try without success to find her. While the rest of the group return to the mainland Sandro and Claudia remain on the island to assist the Coast Guard in locating Anna. After some days with no sign of her the pair decide to search back in Italy. During the time spent searching Claudia and Sandro begin to become attracted to one another and in due course they become lovers - all but forgetting about the still missing Anna.

  An art house movie that asks questions about the morality of art both on and off screen, The Pornographer is a hard-hitting yet strangely unmoving film. Very much a product of the French school of intellectual cinema, the filmmaker of the title is Jacques Laurent (played by Jean Pierre Leaud), a one-time director of adult films who, finding himself down on his luck, is forced to return to his old medium. Far from being a gaudy Boogie Nights style exposé of an unknown world, the film focuses on Laurent's inner turmoil and his rapidly disintegrating relationship with his wife, as well as his restored one with his son Joseph (Jeremie Renier). Director Betrend Bonello handles this material well, if overdoing the art house clichés a little, but the problem with the film (or for some its strong point) comes with the fairly hardcore sex scenes, presented as part of Laurent's movie. While intended to reflect the emptiness of the character's soul, it is hard to see past them as just an attention-grabbing device. Then again, can a film about pornography legitimately not feature sex? One suspects that this debate will run and run and, in its way, The Pornographer has much to say on the subject. On the DVD: The Pornographer's intended release fell foul of the BBFC, who objected to one particularly explicit scene, a continuing argument that provides much of the material for the DVD's extra features. There is a reproduction of the BFFC ruling, a statement in reply from Bonello (which demonstrate the similarities he shares with his fictional counterpart, certainly when it comes to a vision of erotica) and an excellent essay from critic Pierre Perrene. In addition there are biographies, the cinematic trailer and an option to view the film with or without English subtitles. Whatever the moral questions involved, Bonello's film is a visual treat and his stylish eye is well represented by this format. --Phil Udell

After a bloody escape from prison political terrorist Bruno (played by the director himself) attempts to resume his campaign of bombings and assassinations. But his colleagues have now comfortably settled into a bourgeois lifestyle so he's forced to go it alone stopping at nothing to achieve his goals... Two: Afraid that he might be dying Alain conceals the truth from Cecil the woman he loves. Despite her instincts she suspects he's lying and prefers to imagine he's having an affair. Yet is it possible everyone is in on the conspiracy including best friend Agnes? Three: Manise is equally devoted to his wife Agn''s and his job as a cop. He has done deals with the local crime boss too. However his troubles are triplefold: he is trying to capture Bruno dealing with the local crime boss and dealing with his wife's addiction to morphine. All these events are threatening to collide with tragic consequences... This is a powerful cinema experience and presented on four DVDs in a specially designed box set Lucas Belvaux's achievements are more evident since they offer the chance to watch simultaneously three different scenes which take place at the same moment in time. Comparisons have been made to Kieslowski's classic 'Three Colours' trilogy but 'One Two And Three' form a trilogy of outstanding achievement.

  Winner of the Academy Award for best foreign-language film in 1992, Indochine is a vast, panoramic love story set in the twilight years of French Indo-China. Comparisons with David Lean are inevitable, considering director Régis Wargnier's use of the setting as a backdrop to the love-triangle between the three main characters. Catherine Deneuve gives a strong, emotionally restrained performance as Eliane, the plantation owner whose colonial paradise is slowly falling apart. Vincent Perez is magnetic yet thoughtful as the young officer Jean-Baptiste, complemented by Jean Yanne's dry cynicism as the Chief of Police knowingly fighting a losing battle for French culture. Linh Dan Pham is affecting as Camille, Eliane's adopted daughter whose journey from aristocratic ancestry to Marxist induction personifies the changing face of South-East Asia in the period around World War Two. Patrick Doyle's score reinforces the expressive sweep of the direction and "orientalisms!" are kept to a minimum. On the DVD The 16:9 wide-screen format reproduces best in the domestic scenes, and there are 30 individual chapter points, detailed in the interactive moving menu. The disc also has detailed filmographies for the main cast and director, including an entertaining "gossip" file for Deneuve. English subtitles are optional. A half-hour location report would have been worthwhile, but overall this is a persuasive presentation of one of the few genuine historical-romantic epics of the 1990s. --Richard Whitehouse

Dick Rennick (Richard Basehart) begins to have serious doubts about whether he can trust the new recruit. With Rennick becoming ever more suspicious about Maurer's motives the pair soon find themselves in the thick of battle but uncertainty remains as to who the common enemy is.
