Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes: The classic BBC TV series. Regarded by many to be the best incarnation of the Baker Street sleuth Douglas Wilmer gives a career-defining performance in this celebrated BBC series. Intelligent quick on his heels and bearing a striking resemblance to the original Sidney Paget illustrations Wilmer’s portrayal is possibly the closest to Conan Doyle’s original vision that there has ever been. In 2012 his status as legend within the Sherlock pantheon was cemented when he was asked to make a cameo appearance in Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch. The first story in this series The Speckled Band was originally produced as part of the BBC drama strand Detectives. Appearing alongside Wilmer as Holmes’ loyal companion Dr John Watson was the great Nigel Stock. Such was the success of the adaptation that Wilmer and Stock were reunited a year later for a full 12-part series. With a supporting cast that included Clochemerle star Peter Madden as Inspector Lestrade TV veteran Derek Francis as Mycroft Holmes and guest stars such as Peter Wyngarde (Department S The Innocents) and Patrick Troughton (Doctor Who) the popularity of the series gave rise to a second series in which the role of Sherlock was played by Peter Cushing. Presented for the first time on UK DVD this long-awaited release also includes an array of fascinating special features including two reconstructions of partially-surviving episodes an alternative presentation of the Detectives pilot an alternative title sequence an interview with Douglas Wilmer and a number of newly-recorded audio commentaries. • Carry On Cowboy [1965]Carry On Cowboy | DVD | (27/08/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £13.99

Made in the "classic" period of the series, 1966's Carry On Cowboy is a spoof Western set in Stodge City, about to suffer the arrival of black-hatted outlaw The Rumpo Kid, played by the less-than-youthful Sid James. Kenneth Williams is the aptly named Judge Burke, who appeals to Washington for help to combat this gunslinger and his henchmen. Assistance arrives in the form of Jim Dale's Marshall P Knutt, a drainage, sanitation and garbage expert from England, with a reference from Lady Pushing for doing a "good job on her main sludge channel", whose Christian name provokes a predictable misunderstanding. Fortunately, he's accompanied by Annie Oakley. As ever, much fun is to be had cheering/groaning along to double-entendres about "big ones", but never mind the script, feel the characters. Joan Sims does a good Mae West impression; Syd James "Ha hwa-ha-ha!"s his way through his part with his usual aplomb; the underrated Peter Butterworth is excellent as an inept Doctor; while Bernard Bresslaw adds to his impressively multi-ethnic CV, playing a Native American, with Charles Hawtrey as his incorrigible firewater-loving Chief. On the DVD: No extras, sadly, other than scene selection but Alan Hume's splendidly authentic colour lensing is suitably refurbished here. --David Stubbs

  • Far And Away [1992]Far And Away | DVD | (08/09/2003) from £5.01   |  Saving you £0.98 (19.56%)   |  RRP £5.99

Filmed in the widescreen splendour of "Panavision Super 70" and blessed with the finest production values that Hollywood clout can buy, this tale of spunky Irish immigrants forgot one crucial ingredient: a decent screenplay. The film is entertaining enough, and director Ron Howard brings his technical proficiency to the simple plot, culminating in a dynamic, breathtaking depiction of the Oklahoma land rush of 1893. But the movie is really just a vacuous vehicle for married stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman as (respectively) the poor tenant farmer and rich landlord's daughter who flee Ireland to be American pioneers. The scenery and the stars are never less than stunning, but Howard falls short of the mark in his attempt to match the epic sweep of films by David Lean. On the other hand, this movie is certainly never boring even if it rarely makes sense, and Lean's own Irish epic, Ryan's Daughter, is a snoozer by comparison. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com
