  Father Vassey (Michael Rooker) has a problem. Using his two 9mm, laser-sighted cannons, he has tracked down and killed the holders of a heretic ceremony meant to bring a demon into the world. Not just any demon, for this one's reason to be is nothing less than uncreating creation. The problem is, Vassey's too late. The demon has manifested and escaped, and is now on the hunt for the soul of a young boy who is believed to be saint material, due to the stigmata he had at birth. The film is directed by Jamie Dixon, heretofore a special effects supervisor, who shows canny restraint where special effects are concerned. The shadowy demon of the title is depicted often by a fluid black cloud, which is functional without losing its eeriness or credibility. The acting is solid, never campy, though Michael Rooker sometimes feels out of place. And the climactic scenes, built up to with good pacing, are fraught with peril and excitement. All in all, this is a worthwhile effort for a first-time director, and that makes it one of the best direct-to-video releases I've seen in quite a long time. Jed sells his land for $25 million whereupon his town sophisticate cousin Pearl convinces him the wealthy Los Angeles suburb of Beverly Hills might provide a suitable beau for his daughter Elly May and career opportunities for his wayward nephew Jethro Bodine. So they load up the old rattletrap truck and along with Duke the family dog they move to Beverly complete with a rocking chair up top to house granny. The Clampett's in their new 32 room 14 bathroom mansion on Crestview Drive live as they always have never abandoning their mountain attire or replacing the old truck. They continue to grow their own food and endeavouring to keep livestock. Attempting to live a rural life despite his wealth Jed a practical good natured man longed for the old ways back in the Ozarks but made the best of being in Beverly Hills. Other characters we see often in the program include The Drysdales; The Clampett's neighbours and more importantly their greedy bank manager Milburn Drysdale. Jane Hathaway loyal and efficient assistant to Mr. Drysdale who harbours something of a crush for Jethro. And Elly May's critters numerous animals adopted by Elly May including dogs cats and goats as well as the more unusual animals a deer a bear a raccoon a kangaroo and several chimpanzees! Misunderstandings are a general source of humour in this program either the Clampett's don't understand something they have never encountered before such as the swimming pool (throughout the program Granny used it to do the laundry) or the various city dwellers don't comprehend the Clampett's.

  There are a lot of broad comedies about men refusing to grow up, but few have the sly bite of You, Me and Dupree. Even though Carl (Matt Dillon, Crash, There's Something About Mary) is newly married to Molly (Kate Hudson, Almost Famous, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days), when his best friend Dupree (Owen Wilson, Wedding Crashers, The Life Aquatic) ends up homeless, Carl invites Dupree into their house--in which Dupree promptly makes himself at home, culminating in setting the place on fire during lurid sex. But though he's trapped between his wife and his best friend, Carl may have bigger problems as his boss--and father-in-law--hates him and is sneakily working against his marriage. You, Me and Dupree seems at first glance to be a frat-boy farce about men being emasculated by their wives, but the well-written script, guided with a sure hand by director team Joe and Anthony Russo (who each directed episodes of the top-notch TV series Arrested Development), successfully walks a treacherous path between multi-layered characters and comic events, and is all the funnier as a result. Michael Douglas (Wonder Boys, Fatal Attraction) turns in a sharp, nasty performance as Molly's overly-possessive father. Also featuring Seth Rogen (The 40 Year Old Virgin). --Bret Fetzer
