There's trouble in the boardroom and the bedroom as tensions heat up while struggling to run the family business in the fourth series of this first-rate soap opera (Observer), featuring dramatic performances from fantastic acting talent including Jean Anderson, Richard Easton, Derek Benfield and Colin Baker Simply Media are delighted to announce the first DVD release of The Brothers: The Complete Series 4, containing all fourteen episodes of this television gem written and created by N. J. Crisp (Dixon of Dock Green) and Gerard Glaister (Dr. Finlay's Casebook), following the successful release of series 1-3 to date. Originally shown on BBC One's Sunday night spot in 1974, and proving to be one of the BBC's most popular drama series of the 1970s, this will be the first time fans of the long-running boardroom soap opera will be able to own this series on DVD. So popular was the series, a Christmas album entitled Christmas with the Hammonds was even recorded by the cast! Series 4 continues the dramatic story of the Hammond family and their trials and tribulations in attempting to run the family's lucrative trucking company Hammond Transport Services, inherited after the death of family patriarch Robert Hammond, who died while doing the nasty with his secretary. Tensions run high however when, unexpectedly, shares in the family business are split between all three brothers in the family, and also Robert's secretary and mistress Jennifer (Jennifer Wilson - Z Cars) meaning the family are forced into alliances that no one wants... The three brothers are also very different characters with different ideas on how to run the business, which leads to much conflict amongst the family. Edward (Patrick O'Connell - Fraud Squad) is a no nonsense, well-paid accountant who feels he was most qualified to run the whole business by himself, David (Robin Chadwick - Pride and Prejudice (1967)) is a disinterested second class honours, first class layabout arts graduate and playboy with a glamorous girlfriend (Gabrielle Drake), while Brian (Richard Easton - Finding Forrester) is a dull accountancy wizard with a controlling wife. Throw domineering mother Mary (Jean Anderson - The Railway Children) in to the mix and The Brothers delivered a winning formula of power struggles and family feuding that kept devoted fans coming back for more for the five years that the series aired. Doctor Who fans will also rejoice at the introduction of sixth incarnation of The Doctor Colin Baker to this series as the famously ruthless young city banker Paul Merroney, seen as a prototype for the new Thatcher-era inspired generation of corporate go-getters. So deplorable was his character, Paul Merroney was even voted the most hated man in Britain at the time by readers of The Sun. With gripping boardroom drama that would not be found on television today, family tragedy, financial struggles, secrets and betrayal all on the cards, this is a series that should not be missed by any fans of The Brothers, and is a great opportunity for any newcomers to the series to get stuck in to the woes of the Hammond family. Series 1-3 of The Brothers have already been released on DVD by Simply Media, with Series 5 planned for release 27th March 2017, and series 6 and 7 to follow during the rest of 2017.

  • All Dogs Christmas Carol [1998]All Dogs Christmas Carol | DVD | (17/11/2003) from £4.99   |  Saving you £3.00 (37.50%)   |  RRP £7.99

An All Dogs Christmas Carol is another straight-to-video sequel of a so-so animated film. The original 1989 All Dogs Go to Heaven was hardly inspired but contained expert Don Bluth animation and the amusing voices of Burt Reynolds and his gang. Now Steven Weber voices the animated mutt Charlie who is still palling around with the same gang through three movies and an animated series. Here the arch villain, Carface (Ernest Borgnine), gets the traditional Dickens treatment of being visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve. The opening number, "When I Hear a Christmas Carol", is a good start, but soon TV-ish animation and the low humour becomes wearing. Kids who like the earlier Dog efforts won't be disappointed, but the entire series can hardly be defined as great entertainment. The saving grace is the foolproof Christmas Carol visitations. --Doug Thomas

Finding Forrester is a very accomplished example of the sentimental melodrama that Gus Von Sant has made his own--issues like integrity and snobbery are presented with just enough simplification to the set pieces that no-one feels challenged. Brilliant baseball player Jamal gets the chance to move from a sink school in the Bronx to a private academy where his real intellectual and artistic talent will be nurtured along with his sporting skills. This is an American film about class and race, but one that makes the real issue Jamal's unsuspecting need to defend himself against accusations of plagiarism. His artistic mentor is a reclusive novelist, whose whereabouts he keeps secret even when he stands to lose everything. Rob Brown is extraordinary as the boy, conveying the sensitivity, genius, obstinacy and physicality of a character written as a paragon; Sean Connery turns in a predictably fine performance as Forrester, using his authority to make the part credible; F Murray Abrahams is, as always, an effective villain--he brings an observed creepy snobbery to the film; Anna Paquin makes a good impression in the minor part of Jamal's white schoolfellow and supporter. On the DVD: The disc includes two powerful deleted scenes of school choirs, a "making-of" documentary and a short film about the auditions process which found Rob Brown. It has fine sound--Dolby Digital 5.1--that brings out the film's jazz score perfectly. The anamorphic 2.35:1 aspect ratio, enhanced for 16:9 TVs, looks just fine. --Roz Kaveny

Drums pound, the music bursts into life with a cry of "Stingray!... Stingray!" Who can resist? Stingray (1964) was the show Gerry Anderson made just before he really hit the big time with Thunderbirds (1965). He produced 39 episodes of the 21st century adventures of Troy Tempest, tall, dark and handsome (his voice based on James Garner's) captain of the titular submarine. Troy's mission: to protect the seas on behalf of WASP (World Aquanaut Security Patrol). With complex underwater model and puppet effects, this was ground-breaking television, especially as it was the first UK series to be made in colour, even though for years it was only seen in black and white. Special effects director Derek Meddings later graduated to the James Bond films, while Moneypenny herself (actress Lois Maxwell) voiced Atlanta Shore. Here, just as in the Bond films, she played second fiddle in our hero's affections, the mute Marina becoming Stingray's sex-goddess. The end credits even featured a song in her honour, "Aqua Maria", which became an international hit. As for the bad guys, half-man, half-fish Titan and his Terror Fish wage a dastardly war against humanity and the peaceful underwater citizens of Pacifica. Four decades on, the models and underwater sequences still impress and Stingray remains eccentric cult family entertainment. On the DVD: There are seven episodes on the first DVD volume, including the pilot episode, "Stingray", in which a Titan Terror Fish sinks a WASP submarine, leading to Troy and sidekick Phones falling into the hands of the evil Titan. This action-packed beginning introduces all the major characters and gadgets, setting the scene for the adventures to come. "Plant of Doom" sees Titan outraged that Troy has rescued his beautiful slave Marina. After consulting an undersea god he hatches a revenge plot using a deadly air-consuming flower. In "Sea of Oil" Atlanta is kidnapped by an underwater race who plant a bomb on Stingray, while in "Hostages of the Deep" Marina is threatened with death by swordfish blade. --Gary S Dalkin

Mutant X takes the useful SF trope of the mutant minority persecuted by the state and adds potentially interesting spins on which it rarely delivers. The charismatic villain Mason Eckhart of the Genetic Security Agency (Tom McCamus) professes an ideology of service and sacrifice for which many mutants fall, unaware of his genocidal and exploitative real intentions--though his habit of dumping failed minions into glass tubes for subsequent vivisection might give them a clue. A quest for redemption underlies the apparent smugness of Adam (Michael Shea), the good guys' mentor who used to work for the GSA's front, research company Genomex. The shiny, pretty central quartet themselves--fierce acrobatic Shalimar, reliable density-shifter Jesse, laddish electro-boy Brennan and sensible mind-twister Emma--alternately rescue new mutants from Eckhart and neutralise those who are threats. After a couple of pilot episodes that pushed into OTT visual stylishness, the show has settled into mildly repetitive though watchable blandness: for the most part it avoids story arcs and a large cast of regulars in favour of plugging its characters into the stock plots of television SF, such as doubles, vengeance crusades and untrustworthy lovers. On the DVD: Mutant X Series 1, Volume 1 contains the following episodes: "The Shock of the New". Shopgirl Emma discovers her powers of persuasion have made her the target of murderous Mason Eckhart and his henchman Thorne. Rescued by Shalimar and Jesse, she refuses their offer of passage into the mutant underground and is attacked a second time. "I Scream the Body Electric". Captured while rescuing Emma, electricity-shooting Brennan is forcibly recruited into Eckhart's kidnap squads--can he be rescued or avoid corruption? "Russian Roulette". A gun that targets and destroys the DNA of mutants is being tested by Russian mercenaries. Mutant X needs it to cure Brennan and to stop Eckhart obtaining it. "Fool for Love". Shalimar falls for a GSA scientist whose cure for mutancy is more dangerous than either of them know. "Kiloherz". A fiery radical young mutant, Kiloherz, can travel in radio waves and inhabit electronic equipment. Mutant X need to save him from Eckhart and stop him doing too much damage. The DVDs also has trailers, Web links and interviews with Victoria Pratt (Shalimar) and producer Karen Wookey. --Roz Kaveney
