  The most lavish feature built around Laurel and Hardy, 1934's March of the Wooden Soldiers is also the most bizarre. Opening unpromisingly with one of several mawkish numbers derived from Victor Herbert's musical Babes in Toyland, the antics of toyshop labourers Stannie Dum and Ollie Dee are worked into a scenario midway between Lewis Carroll and The Brothers Grimm. Nursery-rhyme characters come and go in a surreal fantasy, with the evil Mr Barnaby threatening to evict Widow Peep from her shoe unless he receives her daughter Bo in marriage. The movie culminates in a full-scale invasion of Toyland by the yeti-ish Bogeymen and their defeat by the 100 six-foot wooden soldiers that Stan and Ollie have built by mistake. Henry Brandon gives a characterful performance, while 1930s child star Charlotte Henry is an appealing heroine. Directors Gus Meins and Charles R Rogers milk the slapstick to an increasingly unnerving degree. Reputedly Hardy's favourite among the double act's features, March of the Wooden Soldiers emerges now as their most audacious screen appearance. On the DVD: March of the Wooden Soldiers on disc reproduces the original black and white print in 4:3 ratio with pristine clarity; the mono soundtrack has similarly worn well. The potted biographies of Laurel and Hardy are too brief to be worthwhile, but the inclusion of the 1915 short Hustling for Health--among the earliest of Stan Laurel's film appearances--is a valuable bonus. --Richard Whitehouse

This release features the complete second series of 'Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased)'. Episodes comprise: Whatever Possessed You?: Jeff and Jeannie are hired to investigate goings on at a hotel that is supposed to be haunted. Jeff has a disbelief in ghosts until Marty re-appears and gives Jeff back his memories of Marty being a ghost. Revenge Of The Bog People: Jeff's ex-fianc''e Freya Cargill asks him to re-open investigations into the death of her Egyptologist father. Jeff and Jeannie head for the museum where he worked and meet some of the strange staff who work there. O Happy Isle: Jeff and Jeannie are hired to investigate the apparent suicide of a young gay man on the remote island of Strait Isle in Scotland the inhabitants of which are starting to show some bizarre character traits. Painkillers: At the request of Bulstrode and Lacey Jeff and Jeannie pose as doctors to investigate activities at a secret underground pain-research laboratory. Marshall & Snellgrove: Jeff and Jeannie are hired to investigate what is happening at the home of an eccentric family. But so are their arch-rivals Marshall & Snellgrove another firm of private detectives... The Glorious Butranekh: When the baby of their secretary Felia is kidnapped by the sinister Butranekh Cult Jeff and Jeannie investigate some unpleasant goings on in Latvia. Two Can Play That Game: Jeff and Jeannie investigate an empty department store where a crook's love of playing games has reached lethal extremes. But Jeff and Marty's relationship has reached such a nadir that Marty is cast adrift in Rhadamanthus-On-Sea.

  Comic actor Keenen Ivory Wayans made a creditable effort to expand his career horizons by writing the script for this action thriller, in which he also stars. Wayans plays US Marine Sgt James Dunn, a military hero who refuses an order to shoot a young shepherd during the Gulf War. His insubordination leads to a lethal struggle with a superior officer and a subsequent murder conviction against Dunn.Plucked from his death sentence by a covert unit of Marines, however, Dunn soon finds himself in a shadowy world of undercover wars under the command of one Lt Col. Grant Casey (Jon Voight). Offered freedom in exchange for aiding a mission against a corrupt industrialist (Robert Culp), Dunn agrees and then discovers he has actually been set up to take the fall for an assassination. Suddenly, he's the most wanted man in the world, with police, the military, the Secret Service and legions of reward seekers chasing him around Los Angeles. Jill Hennessy stars as an eyewitness who happened to catch the killing on videotape and can clear Dunn if she would only cooperate with him--a problem, since he has kidnapped her. Directed by David Glenn Hogan, Most Wanted works just fine as a well-oiled action piece with a capable star and competent action sequences. The story ideas (especially Dunn's Rambo-esque flight through the city and his reliance on esoteric survival skills) feel overly familiar, but that only makes Most Wanted all the more enjoyable as a pot-boiler instead of a serious original. --Tom Keogh
