A Hollywood scandal springs to life in Peter Bogdanovich's lively Cat's Meow. In 1924 the immensely powerful publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst held a yacht party that ended with a gunshot. Between Hearst's influence and that of his glitterati guests (including Louella Parsons and Charlie Chaplin), no satisfying account of what happened ever made it to the public. The Cat's Meow reconstructs one of the more whispered-about possible scenarios and has quite a bit of fun doing so. Cast and crew alike skewer 1920s Hollywood decadence and, by extension, today's. Eddie Izzard is a boldly odd casting choice as Chaplin, but he succeeds, refusing to fall back on Little Tramp mannerisms. There are several other good performances, but best of all is the cool-as-sherbet Joanna Lumley as the deliciously jaded Elinor Glyn. The script is a strong one, never stooping to the excesses of its characters--Bogdanovich's take is far from the most lurid allegations of what happened that weekend. --Ali Davis

Lassie has to try and make her way home in time for Christmas in this charming family movie.
It's easy to forget that, though fronting the British war effort through most of World War Two, Winston Churchill had spent the previous decade isolated in Parliament and in an internal opposition to the Conservative party. Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years dramatises this period, in which the growing menace of Nazism in Germany was met with indifference, even fear by governments of the day who were more concerned with their survival than in serving those who had elected them. Churchill is perceptively played by Robert Hardy who confirms the image without falling into caricature. Visionary and obstinate by turns, he galvanises his supporters and enrages his enemies with a passion borne of conviction. A seasoned British cast includes Peter Barkworth as the amiable but ineffectual Stanley Baldwin, Eric Porter as the truly "out of time" Neville Chamberlain, Edward Woodward as the scheming Samuel Hoare, and Nigel Havers as the tragically flawed Randolph Churchill. Martin Gilbert has done a persuasive job transforming his novel into a TV script, the scenes in the House of Commons having a gritty reality that makes compulsive viewing. On the DVD: It's a pity that the Southern Pictures production first screened in 1981 has emerged so dimly in this incarnation. Has the master tape eroded so badly, or was it simply not available? However, it's worth putting up with the technical defects to enjoy this historically informed and grippingly dramatic serial. --Richard Whitehouse

Sex so hot, it's deadly", announces the tagline for Sexual Malice. Originally screened in 1994, this is a quintessential late-night TV movie. The well-worn plot concerns relationships inside and outside of marriage, with a twist obvious enough for the non-rocket scientists among us to have twigged well before the denouement. As for the sex scenes--there's little here that errs on the outré side of Dirty Dancing (interestingly enough, there's a secondary role for one Don Swayze), and the visuals are stylishly, almost tastefully done--Ashley Irwin's coffee-table funk adding the right musical enhancement. As the upwardly mobile accountant Christine Chandler, Diane Barton gives a creditable portrayal of a woman caught between the routine of marriage to the predictable Richard (stolidly dependable Edward Albert) and the excitement of an illicit affair with the passably seductive Quinn, played with a certain edge by Doug Jeffrey. The two subplots are wafer thin in narrative terms, but those who enjoy bump-and-grind under piers and in changing rooms will certainly stay the course. On the DVD: Sexual Malice comes to DVD in a 4:3 full frame print that's nonetheless a classy looking effort, and the stereo soundtrack is similarly pristine. There are detailed filmographies, a well-reproduced but oddly random photo gallery, and a trailer that manages to summarise a completely different scenario. As its closing voice-over proclaims, "Caught between a boring husband and a dangerous lover, a passionate woman can commit just about anything". Now you know.--Richard Whitehouse
