Like a roller coaster ready to fly off its rails, Van Helsing rockets to maximum velocity and never slows down. Having earned blockbuster clout with The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, writer-director Stephen Sommers once again plunders Universal's monster vault and pulls out all the stops for this mammoth $148-million action-adventure-horror-comedy, which opens (sans credits) with a terrific black-and-white prologue that pays homage to the Universal horror classics that inspired it. The plot pits legendary vampire hunter Van Helsing (Hugh Jackman) against Dracula (the deliciously campy Richard Roxburgh), his deadly blood-sucking brides, and the Wolfman (Will Kemp) in a two-hour parade of outstanding special effects (980 in all) that turn Sommers' juvenile plot into a triple-overtime bonus for CGI animators. In alliance with a Transylvanian princess (Kate Beckinsale) and the Frankenstein monster (Shuler Hensley), Van Helsing must prevent Dracula from hatching his bat-winged progeny, and there's so much good-humored action that you're guaranteed to be thrilled and exhausted by the time the 10-minute end-credits roll. It's loud, obnoxious, filled with revisionist horror folklore, and aimed at addicted gamers and eight-year-olds, but this colossal monster mash (including Mr. Hyde, just for kicks) will never, ever bore you. --Jeff Shannon

If it's high-action thrills and spills or an engaging plot line that you're after, then Hussein Erkenov's bleak art film 100 Days Before the Command may not be your first choice. However, students of the uniquely Russian school of filmmaking should make a point of seeing this stark, unhurried piece of work (the film's actual 67-minutes seems to last a lot longer). Detailing the experiences of a handful of young Russian soldiers, the various narrative strains barely tie together as a whole, leaving the viewer struggling to follow the action. But the plot would seem to be secondary to Erkenov's visuals, understandably low-tech given that the film was shot in 1990, a mere year after the fall of the Iron Curtain. Long, slow tracking shots abound and there are many periods of absolute silence and little action, although the film captures military brutality just as well as the likes of Full Metal Jacket. This is hard work but rewarding viewing. --Phil Udell

  • Puccini - La Boheme (Welser-Moest, Zurich Opera House Orch.)Puccini - La Boheme (Welser-Moest, Zurich Opera House Orch.) | DVD | (19/02/2007) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £13.99

Puccini based his opera La bohme on the autobiographical novel ""Scnes de la vie de Bohme"" by Henri Murger. The novel reminded him of his own bohemian existence as an impoverished student at the conservatory in Milan. During the composition process Puccini learned that Ruggero Leoncavallo was also working on turning the novel into an opera and writing his own libretto for it. The two composers swiftly became rivals but Puccini managed to finish his opera first which premiered over a year before Leoncavallo's version. The way in which Puccini managed to combine comedy and tragedy in this opera is superb and Franz Welser-Mst's conducting aims to really bring out the libretto. The Belgian director of this production Philippe Sireuil was heavily inspired by Aki Kaurismki's film version of Henri Murger's novel ""Scnes de la vie de Bohme"". Kaurismki's great melancholic sensitive and totally unpretentious cinematic impressions led Sireuil to picture the state of a ""carefree poverty"" in which the bohemian students live on the edge of society. Stage designer Vincent Lamaire has been working closely with Sireuil for years and the key aspect in the set design for both of them was to place the characters in completely realistic surroundings. Furniture and props are only used very sparingly.
