It's pretty tough to beat Jailhouse Rock in terms of sheer entertainment, but Elvis lovers are particularly fond of this 1964 hit. The Big E plays race-car driver Lucky Jackson, who arrives in Las Vegas for an upcoming Grand Prix race. Lucky's car needs a new engine, so he gets a waiter job at a casino and starts working his crooning charms on Rusty Martin (Ann-Margret). It's their on-screen chemistry that makes this flick a lot of fun; Presley never had a better co-star than Ann-Margret, and their race-car romance is quintessential 1960s fluff. Then there are the songs, of course, including the snappy title tune, a rockin' rendition of Ray Charles's "What'd I Say?" and "The Yellow Rose of Texas". Released to coincide with the 25th anniversary of Presley's death in August 2002, Elvis: The Ultimate Collection is a comprehensive five-hour collection of the US television series of the same name. The series divides Elvis' career into six distinct but not watertight eras ("The Memphis Years", "The Television Years", "The Hollywood Years", "The Memphis Mafia", "The Comeback Special" and "The Vegas Years"). There's a great deal of overlap between the episodes, with many of the key events being re-explored in subsequent parts (i.e., Presley's conscription into the army, and his move into Hollywood movies). As with all Elvis documentaries the usual band of biographers and "friends" are interviewed, and standard television news and movie footage is used. "The Memphis Mafia" part is the most critical section of the collection, highlighting the destructive power of Presley's inner circle. However, the overall uncritical style of the series will undoubtedly appeal to Elvis enthusiasts; due to its sheer length and repetitiveness it is not recommended for those just wanting a concise audio-visual account of this modern-day icon. On the DVD: Elvis: The Ultimate Collection comes on two discs with a clear, sharp picture and a Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack. The first disc includes a short photo gallery of Elvis, with additional DVD-Rom features on Disc 2. When the Kwimper family car runs out of gas on a new Florida highway and an officous state supervisor tries to run them off Pop Kwimper digs in his heels and decides to do a little homesteading. He and his son Toby and their adopted children - Holly Ariadne and the twins - start their own little community along a strip of the roadside. The fishing is good and the living is easy until the mob sets up a gambling operation and the state supervisor sets a sexy social worker on the Kwimpers in an effort to take away Ariadne and the twins.
Few early rockers were more gifted or less honoured in their prime than the late Roy Orbison, whose vaulting tenor and vulnerable love songs conjured heartbreak and desire with operatic intensity. This 1987 concert special came two decades after Orbison had retreated from pop's front lines, yet neither Orbison nor his music coasts on mere nostalgia: in every respect, A Black and White Night survives as a triumphant performance and a superb video production, as well as a first-rate retrospective of Orbison's hits.Filmed in black and white against the streamlined art deco stage of the since-demolished Coconut Grove in downtown Los Angeles, the concert is buoyed by a remarkable cast of A-list Orbison fans who signed on as his accompanists. Under the direction of producer T-Bone Burnett, the stage band thus includes Jackson Browne, Burnett, Elvis Costello, k.d. lang, Bonnie Raitt, J.D. Souther, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits and Jennifer Warnes, along with the rhythm section from Elvis Presley's fabled late 60s and early 70s touring band. That astonishing line-up is all the more noteworthy for the restraint with which they collaborate--it's evident that those superstars came to honour Orbison, not upstage him, resulting in a gratifying cohesion to the performances.Orbison himself sounds as powerful as ever, his soaring falsetto cresting as dramatically as it did on the studio versions of the hits that inevitably dominate. Those songs meanwhile confirm that his blue-chip admiration society came as much for the calibre of his writing as for his ravishing voice: if he remains best known for the jaunty come-on of "Pretty Woman", Orbison was first and foremost a rock balladeer, capable of bringing lumps to our throats with such classics as "Crying" and "Only the Lonely", or conjuring romantic trances through such gentle charmers as "Dream Baby".
