Verdi: Otello -- Berlin Staatskapelle/Barenboim | DVD | (15/11/2002)
from £13.40
| Saving you £11.59 (86.49%)
| RRP One of the chief pleasures of this live production of Otello from the Berlin Staatsoper Unter den Linden is Daniel Barenboim's conducting. From the opening gale-force blast of storm music, through the crunching and stabbing accompaniment of Iago's "Credo" to the shimmering strings of Desdemona's "Willow Song", he doesn't miss a trick. Everything works at the highest pitch of intensity and the orchestra sticks to his beat like glue. It's a necessary compensation for the shortcomings of the staging: the stolid chorus remains unperturbed by the storm and is directed to perform with unison movements; the acting (apart from Valeri Alexejev) is non-committal, and Alexandre Tarta's video direction somewhat flat-footed. She doesn't manage to make much small-screen sense of an impenetrably murky opening scene, for example, and doesn't seem fond of reaction shots. That said, Christian Franz and Emily Magee both have large-scale voices that they know how to shade into mo! ments of intimacy, and George Tsypin's sets are impressive: the murder of Desdemona is set against a brilliant lake of fire. On the DVD: Otello is presented in 1.78:1 ratio with PCM Stereo and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound options. The picture quality is clear, although much of the lighting of this live production is low-level and thus many details do not come over well. Nor does the stage microphone system avoid some muffling of sound. There are subtitles in Italian, English, German, French and Spanish. --Warwick Thompson

Their efforts contributed to the fall of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War with consequences that reverberate throughout the world today. Capote: In 1959 Truman Capote a popular writer for The New Yorker learns about the horrific and senseless murder of a family of four in Halcomb Kansas. Inspired by the story material Capote and his partner Harper Lee travel to the town to research for an article. However as Capote digs deeper into the story he is inspired to expand the project into what would be his greatest work 'In Cold Blood'. To that end he arranges extensive interviews with the prisoners especially with Perry Smith a quiet and articulate man with a troubled history. As he works on his book Capote feels some compassion for Perry which in part prompts him to help the prisoners to some degree. However that feeling deeply conflicts with his need for closure for the book which only an execution can provide. The conflict and mixed motives for both interviewer and subject make for a troubling experience that would produce a literary account that redefined modern non-fiction....

Oh My Goddess! - Vol. 1 | DVD | (14/08/2001)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP Fujishima Kyousuke's Oh My Goddess is--as both animated film and the Manga comic book original--one of the most cutely romantic things in Japanese popular culture. In this first volume, the lonely student Morisato, desperate to get some takeaway food, finds himself connected to the Goddess Hotline and is visited by the angelically beautiful Belldandy, who offers him a wish. Assuming this to be a joke by his fellow students, he wishes that she stay with him forever. In the event, their relationship is tender and most of the comedy derives from brief intermissions when true love fails to run smooth, partly because of visits from her highly sexualised sister Urd and petulant baby sister Skuld. There is an odd picture here of Japanese student life--highly authoritarian dormitories and a playboy culture in which the motorcycle mechanic Morisato is constantly exploited by affluent biker chums--but there is an underlying sweet-naturedness to the three episodes here "Moonlight and Cherry Blossoms", "Midsummer Night's Dream" and "Burning Hearts on the Road" that is remarkably attractive in its sugary way. --Roz Kaveney
