Even though theres an increasing number of horror movies right now, not least ones with characters left open in unfamiliar surroundings (Wolf Creek, Hostel, Vacancy--and plenty more besides), its worth making some time in your life for Gone. Its a small British film, shot in Australia, with a lot more bite than youd expect it to have. Here, the lead characters in question are a pair of in-love backpackers, who, while rambling across Australian desert, meet a stranger on their travels. Things, without giving too much away, escalate from there, but thanks to the wise restraint of first-time director Ringan Ledwidge, events in Gone are kept very taut and extremely tense. Eschewing gimmicks and gore, instead the film is very focused, perhaps a little unambitious, but nonetheless highly effective. Ledwidges cast serve him very well, too. Shaun Evans and Amelia Warner are effective as the backpackers, but its Scott Mechlowicz stranger youll be talking about once Gones credits roll. That, and the superb photography, that delivers some wonderful frames from the terrific Australian scenery. Some may find the relatively slow pace a little troubling, and there isnt much in the way of surprise in Gones locker. But as a small, quietly effective little horror, you wont feel cheated by it at all. --Jon Foster

The Chesterfield Kings take on the evil Andro a maniacal alien bent on world domination who has kidnapped drummer Mike. Can the Chesterfield Kings find their drummer halt Andro's master plan and save the world? In the late 70s The Chesterfield Kings set their own course into the past with an unbelievably raw '60s rhythm & blues sound that borrowed heavily from pre-1966. The Kings so unlike any other underground sensations of the period became the pioneers of the then flourishing garage rock revival and remain so to this day.
Although there have been many regions throughout the United States - and the world at large - that have greatly contributed to the development of jazz a special place must be reserved for the two coasts - namely the cities of New York and Los Angeles - where the bulk of modern jazz developed and evolved. This outstanding DVD pays homage to the two coasts and to some of the most important musicians who have spent a major part of their career there. Some of these musicians were born in the Midwest or the South and later moved to one of the two coasts. What is taken into account when placing the musician in the East or West Coast categories is where they spent the bulk of their artistic career or where they recorded their most influential works. In the case of Lester Young - whose incredible impact was felt throughout the entire country - he was placed on the West Coast due to his especially strong influence on the generations of saxophonists from that Coast. This collection focuses exclusively on live performances ranging from clubs to festivals to TV studio engagements without any speakers or introducers... Governments multinational corporations and religious organisations have secretly wielded tremendous power by holding back critical data or spreading misinformation to further their own aims. This programme exposes the almost inconceivable stories of deceit conspiracy sanctioned piracy and scientific knowledge hidden from the world for far too long. Up for Sale On October 4 1957 the Soviets launch the legendary orbiter Sputnik ushering in the Space Age. In 1998 the Russian Federation launches the first stage of the space station Freedom. While at first glance it seems that little has changed closer scrutiny reveals that billions of American dollars are being funnelled to Russia to secure its participation in the space station partnership. Described by the elite of NASA as a foreign aid project for the Russians the principal purpose of the program may be to abate the mass exodus of Russian rocket scientists to unfriendly nations interested in developing weapons of mass destruction. Heavy Watergate: the War Against Cold Fusion On March 23 1989 respected chemists Dr. Stanley Pons and Dr. Martin Fleishman make an announcement that rocks the world of science. Gil Evans and his Orchestra captures the great jazz pianist in concert at the Palazzo dei Congressi, Lugano on January 27, 1983. Aged 70 at the time, Evans shows no sign of flagging invention as, accompanied by his 18-piece big band, he traverses 10 numbers in just under an hour. Indeed, the 57-minute running length gives away that the concert is a version edited to fill an hour television slot; it would have been nice to have the full gig restored for DVD. Otherwise this is a fine show, with Evans fronting such luminaries as Billy Cobham, drums; Mike Mainieri, vibes; and Michael and Randy Brecker, tenor sax and trumpet respectively. Numbers are evenly divided between Evans originals, from an expansive 10-minute introductory workout on "Hotel Me", to a "Waltz" in duple time to a selection of standards. Thelonious Monk's "Friday the 13th" is ingeniously deconstructed and never quite put back together, Gershwin's "The Honey Man" is reborn in decidedly funky guise. Inevitably Evans finds room for some Hendrix, "Stone Free" making the cut with some glorious playing by John Clark on French horn. This is essential for Evans aficionados and a more than solid introduction to a jazz master for those who wish to get to know his music. On the DVD: Gil Evans and his Orchestra on disc has a 4:3 picture that is very good for a live, shot on video concert film, with only some soft focus long shots and "trails" on panning shots across lights revealing the limitations of the original footage. The sound is available in good PCM stereo, very good 5.1 Dolby Digital and excellent 5.1 DTS. This latter soundtrack offers superb detail and presence combined with a subtle three-dimensional ambience. Extras are a basic text biography of Evans and eight trailers for TDK jazz DVDs.--Gary S Dalkin
